Graham's Port, 1950
Single Harvest Tawny Port
Graham's, the port company owned by the Symington family, has announced the release of a Single Harvest Port from 1940. The launch of the “extremely rare” Graham's 1940 Single Harvest pays tribute to three generations of master blenders, who have tended to the wine over eight decades.
This wine pays tribute to three generations of Master Blenders who contributed to its prolonged ageing in the cellars. Across eight decades, generations of Master Blenders have left their mark on this extraordinary 1950 Single Harvest Tawny Port.
The deep auburn centre reflects the wine’s amazing concentration, while the pale ochre rim signals its venerable age. …

Sandeman, 1950
Vintage Port
Embossed capsule | Plain label
Color: Dark tawny with some red left.
Nose: Sweet Christmas spices. Rich, round sugar. Turpentine.
Palate: Some tannins, edgy. On the dry side for Port (which is typical to me for Sandeman). Decent fruit.
Finish: Medium length. Finish seems younger than the Port's age.

Kopke, 1948
Vintage Port
A rare 1948 vintage port from Kopke, the oldest port house. You should expect a garnet coloured port with aromas of dried red fruit, raisins and figs with prunes, coffee and cinnamon and clove notes. On the palate it should be sweet and smooth with the acidity balancing the sweetness and with a long aftertaste.

Fonseca Port, 1948
Vintage Port
Clearance Offer | Mid Shoulder | Was £1650 | Now £550
1948 Fonseca Vintage Port – James Suckling had bestowed 100 points on this VP. Tawny-centered colour with a light yellowish edge, with surprisingly light colour overall, not what I am used to. In contrast to the massive masculine style of the Taylor, this showed the smooth elegance and feminine style of a great well-aged vintage Port. It exhibits cherry and sweet cranberry fruit, along with an incredibly complex and everlasting finish.

Taylor's Port, 1948
Vintage Port Level in Neck 100 points - Neil Martin Vinous
From the very good 1948 vintage, this very rare Taylors vintage port is one of the finest ports ever made
There is Vintage Port and then there is the 1948 Taylor Fladgate. It remains a monumental Port that towers over the 20th century. Nineteen forty-eight is perhaps one of the lesser-known declarations compared to 1945 and 1963, although nine houses declared that year. Michael Broadbent described that as an “error of judgment” given the quality of the vintage in retrospect. I have been fortunate to taste the 1948 Taylors on several occasions, encountering one or two perfect bottles along the way. …

Taylor's Port, 1948
Vintage Port 100 points - Neil Martin Vinous
100 points - Neil Martin Vinous.
The 1948 Taylor's has a strong tawny colour. On the nose there was a wonderful coffee, chocolate and tobacco. With an alluring herbal aroma. On the palate this port has a luscious feel on the palate and incredibly complex layers of caramel, chocolate and coffee. This continued with an incredible long persistent finish. Constantino Port, 1947
Vintage Port
The port house Sociedad do Vinhos Porto Constantino was founded in 1877 and was a independent producer until it was acquired by the reputable Ferreira group. The 1947 Constantino from the very good vintage is now a mature tawny colour. On the nose the bouquet is caramel and burnt sugar. The palate has a mature and generous taste with some sweetness left. Nice long finish. A beautiful mature port.

This is a special treat at the end of the evening. Murky copper coloured with a rich intense raisoned nose with bay leaf and hints of brandy butter and caramel. Tuke Holdsworth, 1947
New
Vintage Port Bottled by Whitwhams
On the nose chocolate, butter scotch, toffee, coffee, roses and tea lead to a full bodied, soft tannin palate with a lovely balancing acidity. A superb rare port from 1947!
Tuke Holdsworth was the brand name of the old shipper Hunt Roope & Teage, the former owners of Quinta da Eira Velha. The company was sold to Ferreira in 1956 but the quinta was retained by the family and from that point it supplied wines to Martinez and Cockburn.

Croft Port, 1945
Vintage Port - Oporto Bottled
Level in neck | Bin soiled label
A much deeper colour than the ’42 as one would expect. Quite limpid for a 62-year old with a lovely, elegant nose of ginger, leather, figs, almond and black cherries in the background. Very refined with a sedate feel to it. The palate is just sublime with perfect acidity, rich and decadent for Croft and in a sense, riper than the ’35 thanks to the Indian summer? Powerful, spicy and almost decadent towards the finish with wild honey, heather, fig, raisin and liquorice. Very long – this ’45 flirts with perfection. A gorgeous ’45 port.
