1980 Vintage Report

Italian: A very good year. The wines from 1980, are generally quite consistent and there are some great Barolo wines from Piedmont. The wines have reached full maturity but will last for a few more years.

Bordeaux: A very wet, cool, year resulted in a mediocre vintage. The wines are generally characterised by being light and diluted. Nevertheless some producers who operated a strict selection policy still managed to produce some acceptable wines.

Port: An outstanding generally declared vintage from a hugely underrated year. The the good port wines are outstanding. This vintage is ready now but will continue to develop and keep for decades.

Amarone della Valpolicella, 1980
Amarone Negrar
Description: 1980 was a good (***) vintage for Amarone della Vapolicella wines. Amarone della Valpolicella is the most prestigious wine from the Verona area and one of the most important Italian reds. Carefully selected grapes are dried on cane mats for 3 - 4 months before a lengthy maceration and 5 - 8 years in oak casks. It is this process that makes Amarone wines extremely long-lived. The 1980 Negrar is Brick red. Nose of dried flowers, tea leaves, camomile, licquorice. Full bodied, ripe. Finish of plum peel. This wine is fully mature and ready for drinking now

Barolo, 1980
Settimo Aurelio
Description: Mineraly nose which had soft spicy notes and smokey nuances. Really well integrated in the mouth, smooth and relatively generous upfront, if a touch cheesy, though leaner across the midpalate but well fruited with a mineral, anise tinged finish which is very feathery.

Barolo, 1980
Alfredo Prunotto - S Cassiano
Description: From one of the most renowned producers, this bottle is in wonderful condition. Reviews "Very aged Burg-like on the nose, like an old Volnay, with dried fruits, plums and raisins wed to a dusty, earthy funkiness, some meaty notes, lovely spicy anise tones, plenty of flowers and a little peaty smoke. Not that much tar or roses, but there was a little whiff of dried Italian herbs at the edges. Palate was still very fresh, with lots of acid, and structured by firm, fine tannins. Very charming flavours here - lovely dried fruit, dried plums, dark cherries, a touch of raisins and plenty of orange peel. Finish was just starting to dry out a little, but still had a nice kumquat, plum and orange peel nuance to it, along with just that little hint of tar." Review on Cellar Tracker posted Apr 10.
