1985 Vintage Report

Italian: An outstanding vintage, one of the best in the last 50 years for Piedmont and Tuscany. The vintage produced wines of great consistency. The best wines should be great.

Bordeaux: The 1985 vintage produced wines that are characterised by being well developed, rich and having a seductive complexity with an attractive perfume. A drought for much of August and September led to concentrated grapes at harvest. The wines have now generally gone through the peak of their maturity and should be drunk within the next few years.

Port: A great classic Vintage, with concentrated, rich and potent wines. General declaration of vintage.

Brunello di Montalcino, 1985
Talenti, Podere Pian di Conte
Description: From the good 1985 Italian vintage, this Brunello di Montalcino is a blockbuster. "Brick red color clearly evolving towards amber/rust. A full complex bouquet of dried plum, ripe blackberries, tobacco and cedar after some time really jumping out of the glass. Following trough full bodied and smooth on the palate with ripe fruit. But still fresh and vivid and very balanced. very long finish.

Castello Banfi

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1985
St Estephe, 2nd Growth Classification
Description: An outstanding wine rating 95 Parker points. Reviews: "The 1985 is cast from the same mold as the 1982 and 1953 vintages. Forward, with a fabulously scented bouquet of toasty new oak and concentrated red and black fruits (especially black-cherries), it is rich, lush, long, and full-bodied. Already delicious, it should age beautifully." PArker, Wine Advocate 1994 "I cannot believe that a decade has past since I last had this wine. It has a deep garnet colour, followed by a gorgeous, savoury nose with touches of wet clay and dark chocolate. I am quite smitten by its sense of “inviting warmth”. Coming back a few minutes later there is a faint touch of wild mint. The palate is medium-bodied, well balanced, perhaps a little rustic compared to recent vintages but certainly feminine and silky on the finish. Not in the same league as recent vintages but a compelling marriage of Saint Estephe earthiness and the growing season’s corpulence. Drinking well now, but I cannot see the end of the plateau just yet!" Neil Marting Wine Journal Tasted 2008. Drink now-2015+.

Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou, 1985
St Julien, 2nd Growth classification
Description: An outstansing wine scoring 92 Parker points. Reviews: "For sheer elegance, charm, and finesse, the 1985 Ducru-Beaucaillou has it all. The wine is close to full maturity, yet retains a vibrancy and youthfulness that is unusual for a 1985. The generous flavors are soft, but not flabby. The wine possesses outstanding concentration yet is elegant and refreshing. This is a beautifully knit, harmonious Ducru. Anticipated maturity: Now-2010" Parker Bordeaux 3rd Edition

Chateau Margaux, 1985
Margaux, 1er Grand Cru Classe
Description: 94 Points - Robert Parker Reviews: "While not as powerful and concentrated as the 1986, 1983, or 1982, the 1985 Margaux is more charming and, at present, more complex than those more backward vintages. The color is a healthy dark ruby/purple. The seductive nose offers copious quantities of lavishly ripe black berry and cassis fruit intermixed with toasty oak and floral scents. This rich, expansive, and velvety-textured wine has developed more length, and additional flavor dimensions over the last several years. It has always been a remarkably approachable and enjoyable wine, but it appears to be taking on more character and quality than I ever imagined. It is one of the most delicious and seductively opulent Margauxs of the last two decades. I consistently underestimated this wine when young. It gets better every time I re-taste it, which happens with increasing frequency." Parker Bordeaux 3rd Edition. 96 Points Neil Martin, Wine Journal. "Tasted at the Claret Club -85 Dinner at -The Square-. Chateau Margaux remains one of the most compelling, indeed most delicious First Growths. Deeper in colour than its peers, there bouquet is vibrant and vivacious with succulent red fruits, date, a touch of iodine and violets and as before, further aeration reveals those classic pencil lead aromas. The palate is exquisitely balanced, focused and powerful and yet brilliant defined with a sublime talcum finish, a hint of exotic fruit on the finish. Divine. Drink now-2025+ Tasted December 2009."

Chateau Mouton Rothschild , 1985
Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe
Description: Reviews: "..The nose is simple sublime, marked by soft, earthy red-berried fruits, hints of cigar box and graphite with a bewitching sense of delineation and natural grace.. The palate is medium-bodied, beautifully balanced and graceful and whilst never as ambitious as the following vintage Mouton, is content just to satiate the imbiber. Wonderful fresh, tobacco-led finish and superb length.. Drink now-2020. Tasted June 2008. Neil Martin, Wine Journal - Rating 95/100 "The rich, complex, well-developed bouquet of oriental spices, toasty oak, herbs, and ripe fruit is wonderful. On the palate, the wine is also rich, forward, long, and sexy. It ranks behind both Haut-Brion and Chateau Margaux in 1985. I am surprised by how evolved and ready to drink this wine is. Readers looking for a big, boldly constructed Mouton should search out other vintages, as this is a tame, forward, medium-weight wine that is close to full maturity. It is capable of lasting another 15+ years. This estate compares their 1985 to their 1959, but to me it is more akin to their 1962 or 1953. Anticipated maturity: Now-2012. Last tasted, 10/97." Parker Bordeaux 3rd Edition. Rating 90/100.

Chateau Palmer, 1985
Margaux, 3rd growth Classification
Description: This is a meaty, rustic, fleshy, warm nose that is verging on diffuse but manages to pull back from that, more open-knit and generous. The palate is fleshy and seductive with lovely ripe red-berried fruit, touches of cranberry, gravel and earth. It is well-knit on the rounded, lush finish, although not as complex as other 1985’s, not as vivacious and surprisingly rustic. Yet it still has great charm. Drink now-2015. Tasted October 2008 Neal Martin Wine Journal 2009 Rating 91/100 (outstanding) Note vintage is faded but just legible
