1989 Vintage Report

Bordeaux: The 1989 was the middle year of a successful run of three vintages from 1988 to 1990. The vintage is now regarded as an excellent vintage for Bordeaux. As with the other successful vintages the weather was kind with a long, hot, dry summer ripening the grapes. The conditions seemed to favour St Jullien, Pauillac and Pomerol but not Margaux The wines from this vintage are generally characterised by high tannin levels, low acidity and high alcohol levels due to the ripe grapes.

Port: Not a general declaration of Vintage. However this was a good year that produced some attractive, full bodied single quinta wines with plenty of appeal.

Brunello di Montalcino, 1989
Geografico
Description: Grows nicely into a mild, smooth Brunello after about an hour. Not as deep and rich as one would expect of a big montalcino. Quite nice and smooth and great complement to red meat.

Champagne Trouillard, 1989
Grand Reserve Champagne
Description: Made of 100% Chardonnay with a green-gold color, characteristic of Chardonnay, and with fine persistent bubbles. This wine has an aroma that jumps out of the glass and is very inviting. On the nose there are seductive scents of warm almond croissant and honey, lightened by some floral notes. Crisp and refreshing in the mouth and lively with a very refined fruitiness and a touch of smokiness typical of wines from this vineyard.

Chateau Batailley, 1989
Pauillac 5th Growth Classification
Description: The ruby/purple colour is sound, and the bouquet of toasty, smoky oak, chocolate, and super-ripe cassis is followed by a medium-bodied, rich, extracted wine with ferocious tannins and good acidity. This is a large-scaled, more traditionally-styled wine that will mature around 2008. Parker rating 87/100 (Excellent) Drink between now and 2018

Chateau Branaire-Ducru , 1989
St Julien, 4th Growth Classification
Description: Scoring an impressive 92 Points, Robert Parker writes of this wine... "I have always felt that the 1989 Branaire was better than the 1990, and that was once again demonstrated in this blind tasting. The 1989 was exhibiting far more power and intensity than I expected. It has always been an impressively crafted, elegant, seamless wine with cassis fruit nicely dosed by high quality oak. The wine is currently revealing more expansiveness, fuller body, and plenty of lusty richness, a sure-fire formula for producing a crowd pleaser. There are no hard edges to this opulently-textured, rich, ripe, complex, savory style of wine." Parker, Wine Advocate 1997. Rating 92/100

Chateau d'Angludet, 1989
Cantenac (Margaux), cru bourgeois superierur
Description: "The 1989 d'Angludet is one of this property's best wines since their excellent 1983.. It is fat, plump, intensely fruity with a good ruby colour, supple texture, high alcohol, and soft tannins." Parker, Wine Advocate 1993. Rating 87/100 (Excellent)

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1989
Pauillac 5me Cru Classe
Description: Scoring and incredible 95 Parker points - this wine is one of the stars of the 1989 vintage. Reviews: "Consistently backward and dense, with enormous potential, this admirable wine will not be ready for prime time drinking for another 5-7 years. The color is not quite as opaque as the 1990's, but reveals more purple and no lightening at the edge. Hugely concentrated flavors have just begun to offer up a nose of cedar and creme de cassis. Powerful and muscular, with high tannin and superb concentration, this is Lynch Bages at its biggest and most beastly. However, everything is in balance for a stunning evolution. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2030" Parker Wine Advocate, 2000 Rating 95/100 (exceptional) "Tasted blind at The Arches in London. One of the great Lynch Bages, this bottle has a lifted, intense nose of rich dark fruit, cedar, mint and just a touch of garrigues. It just soars from the glass, but there is still a primal element to it. The palate is medium-bodied, but sinewy with robust tannins, notes of blackberry, cedar and some Asian spice. Utterly harmonious and yet you know that in 20-years it is going to be firing on all cylinders. Impressive. Drink now-2030. Tasted February 2009" Neil MArtin, Wine Journal 2009 Rating 95/100

Chateau Palmer, 1989
Margaux, 3rd Growth Classification
Description: One of the all-time great Palmer’s, this wine seems to go from strength to strength. A deep garnet hue, deeper in colour than the Palmer 1990. A lovely nose of blackberry, cloves, tobacco and cedar mixed with a little freshly tilled earth. The palate is medium-bodied yet powerful, well-knit and harmonious. Blackberry and cedar, smoke with a touch of leather. Just a little dryness on the finish, though that simply leaves the palate fresh and begging for more. Superb length, I believe that this is a superior wine to the Palmer 1983. Tasted October 2006. Drinking 2010-2035 Rating 96/100 (extraordinary)

Chateau Pape Clement, 1989
Graves Grand Cru Classe
Description: Pape-Clement produced a charming, forward, medium-bodied wine in 1989. It is a wine with plenty of charm, good color, medium body, soft tannins, and an alluring mineral-laced, blackcurrant fruitiness. Wine advocate 85, 1993 Drink from now until 2012
Price: £64.95 - In Stockmore details >>>
Chateau Phelan Segur, 1989
St Estephe, Cru Grand Bourgeois Exceptional
