Barolo

Barolo is a red wine. It has been named the “the wine of kings” and the “king of wines” by wine experts across the globe. The DOC – Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which is the Italian quality assurance label for wines states that Barolo wine must be produced from 100% Nebbiolo grape and has to age for a minimum of 3 years before being available to buy. The three years includes two years of aging in a barrel and one year resting in the bottle. It is also possible to purchase Reserva Barolo, where the wine must be aged for a minimum of 5 years before being sold.

Barolo wine comes from the Piedmont region of Northern Italy and is produced from the Nebbiolo grape, which is closely related to the word, “nebbia”, meaning “fog” in Italian. The reason the grape is known as Nebbiolo is that in September and October fog is quite common in the Piedmont region, which is the time that the grapes are ready for harvesting.

The Northern part of Italy with it’s warm temperatures during the day and cool temperatures at night, enables the Nebbiolo grape to have good aromatic complexity and high levels of tannin, which makes Barolo an excellent wine for aging.

Barolo, 2002

Clerico - Ciabot Mentin Ginestra

Barolo lies just south-west of Alba in Italy's north-western Piedmont region. It is considered one of the finest and longest-lived wines, often referred to as 'the king of wines and the wine of kings'. Wine production is strictly limited to the vineyards located on steep hills around the towns of Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba and Monforte d'Alba, Despite the different characteristics of these wines due to the varied terroir, they do display similar traits. These include a garnet color, powerful structure, firm tannins and high levels of acidity and alcohol, with the capacity to age for many years.

Barolo, 2001

Terre del Barolo - Le Terre

The "Terre del Barolo" winery is located in the valley running between Alba and Barolo, on the right at the turning off for Castiglione Falletto. lt brings together around four hundred growers, who own approximately 650 hectares of the Great Vineyards of the Langa, in the villages of Grinzane Cavour, Serralunga, Monforte d‘Alba, Diano d‘Alba, Barolo, Novello, La Morra, Verduno, Roddi and Castiglione Falletto.

From the good 2001 vintage this is a traditional Barolo. Restrained dusty earthy nose, not too vibrant in the mouth, with mostly resolved but very sticky grabbing tannins. But it did open up a bit and interestingly showed some berry candy fruit.

Barolo, 2000

Gigi Rosso - Sori del Ulivo Riserva

Great nose, quite generous. Complex and layered. Notes of red cherries and red fruits- a combination of fresh and slightly cooked red berries, violets and leather. Great live structure with amazing backbone of acidity and tannins. The tannins were well integrated, although firm. Flavors were still predominantly primary but you could get some notes of bottle age. Medium++ finish. Overall, quite elegant and young. This will grow better over the next 10 years.

Barolo, 1998

Angelo Boffa

Aromas and flavours of mascerated cherries, cinnamon stick and white truffles. Touch of tar and damp earth. This wine is still deep, rich, medium plus bodied, and probably holding back. Very pleasant now with about an hour in decanter. Will last easily through 2020.

Barolo, 1998

Fontanafredda

This estate owns some of the finest vineyards in the region. The 1998 Barolo offers up dark red fruit, earthiness, tobacco, spices, leather and mocha, with lovely depth for an entry-level bottling. This needs to be opened at least 1-2 hours in advance to allow for some of the rough edges to soften. Overall, the 1998 is quite a success for the estate’s Barolo.

Barolo, 1998

Carretta Tenuta - Cannubi

*** 91 points Robert Parker ***

Reviews
"A powerful, old style Barolo, Carretta's 1998 Cannubi offers up scents of new saddle leather, underbrush, earth, truffles, vitamins, black cherry fruit, rose petals, and tar. Abundant tannin, serious concentration, high extract, and a structured, formidable personality suggest an atypical style in 1998, but one that will repay cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020." Barolo, 1998

Gigi Rosso - Sori del Ulivo Riserva

The Gigi Rosso cantina is based in the commune of Castiglione Falletto. Gigi and his two sons, Claudio and Maurizio, produce and also age fine wines from their premium vineyards in Serralunga and Diana d'Alba. The family started making wines in the 1970s and was among the first in the region to market and bottle their own wines rather than selling their grapes on to the big consortiums.

The 1998 has notes of red fruit, dried herbs, stone dust ans slight toast.
Medium bodied palate with mid-level grip and only decent acidity. Graphite, salt liquorice, apple peel, slight cinnamon and stone dust.
