Barolo is a red wine. It has been named the “the wine of kings” and the “king of wines” by wine experts across the globe. The DOC – Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which is the Italian quality assurance label for wines states that Barolo wine must be produced from 100% Nebbiolo grape and has to age for a minimum of 3 years before being available to buy. The three years includes two years of aging in a barrel and one year resting in the bottle. It is also possible to purchase Reserva Barolo, where the wine must be aged for a minimum of 5 years before being sold.
Barolo wine comes from the Piedmont region of Northern Italy and is produced from the Nebbiolo grape, which is closely related to the word, “nebbia”, meaning “fog” in Italian. The reason the grape is known as Nebbiolo is that in September and October fog is quite common in the Piedmont region, which is the time that the grapes are ready for harvesting.
The Northern part of Italy with it’s warm temperatures during the day and cool temperatures at night, enables the Nebbiolo grape to have good aromatic complexity and high levels of tannin, which makes Barolo an excellent wine for aging.

Vinalba
Still showing nicely after 45 years, but now on the back end of its drinking window. Still a bit of heat on the nose which is gorgeous with smoked meat and dried flowers. Soft tannins, some red fruits still around and very nice earthiness. An enjoyable bottle that should be drunk soon.

Pio Cesare
This wine shows the magic of an aged Barolo. It starts with a beautiful Piedmontese nose of chocolate, damp wood, soy sauce and spice surrounded by deep, slightly heady aromas of dried dates, cherries and figs, all wreathed by classic notes of rose and tar. The palate is still just about right - still bright with acidity, but with tannins that had softened out, it showed lovely earthy flavours specked with wood spice, smoky tar and flowers floating around a delicious mouthful of sour cherries as the wine moved into a nice fresh finish that ended with a touch of savoury earth and soy notes ringed with a little halo of rose petals. …

Bosca Reserve Speciale
please bear in mind that this wine comes in 2 different labels (see photo)
Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Mascarello M - Rocchetta
Made with the Nebbiolo grape, Barolo is considered to be one of the finest types of wine in the world and is often refered to as 'the King of wines'.
Mascarello is a renowned producer and the 1960 outshines the vintage. Colour is brick red with a watery rim. The nose was packed and staked with tar, tobacco and roses. On the palate the wine still has plenty of fruit, a very nice sweetness and good balance - amazing for a wine this age combined with fine finish with plenty of stuffing.

The wine has tastes of cherries and a little currant, with a medium body and finish. Florals and spice come through on the nose, which is a little musty at first but then opens up beautifully on standing. Minerals and fruit develop on the palate, from a wine that has lasted well and is a credit to the Barolo name.

Serio Borgogno
From the good 1958 vintage, this bottle is in wonderful condition with good levels. THis barolo is typical with notes of herbs, strawberry and peach tones and top notes of nettles, dried lemon zest and flowers. light nuances of caramel and old leather reveal the age. The taste is dominated by sweet liquorice tones which yielded to subtle, acid-driven fruit on the mid-palate. Hints of herb and tar. Superb!
