Barolo is a red wine. It has been named the “the wine of kings” and the “king of wines” by wine experts across the globe. The DOC – Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which is the Italian quality assurance label for wines states that Barolo wine must be produced from 100% Nebbiolo grape and has to age for a minimum of 3 years before being available to buy. The three years includes two years of aging in a barrel and one year resting in the bottle. It is also possible to purchase Reserva Barolo, where the wine must be aged for a minimum of 5 years before being sold.
Barolo wine comes from the Piedmont region of Northern Italy and is produced from the Nebbiolo grape, which is closely related to the word, “nebbia”, meaning “fog” in Italian. The reason the grape is known as Nebbiolo is that in September and October fog is quite common in the Piedmont region, which is the time that the grapes are ready for harvesting.
The Northern part of Italy with it’s warm temperatures during the day and cool temperatures at night, enables the Nebbiolo grape to have good aromatic complexity and high levels of tannin, which makes Barolo an excellent wine for aging.

Marchesi di Barolo Reserva Sarmassa
From the good 1979 vintage.
Barolo lies just south-west of Alba in Italy's north-western Piedmont region. Wine production is strictly limited to the vineyards located on steep hills around the towns of Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba and Monforte d'Alba, Despite the different characteristics of these wines due to the varied terroir, they do display similar traits. Terre del Barolo
The "Terre del Barolo" winery is located in the valley running between Alba and Barolo, on the right at the turning off for Castiglione Falletto. lt brings together around four hundred growers, who own approximately 650 hectares of the Great Vineyards of the Langa, in the villages of Grinzane Cavour, Serralunga, Monforte d‘Alba, Diano d‘Alba, Barolo, Novello, La Morra, Verduno, Roddi and Castiglione Falletto.
From the good 1978 vintage this is a traditional Barolo. Restrained dusty earthy nose, not too vibrant in the mouth, with mostly resolved but very sticky grabbing tannins. But it did open up a bit and interestingly showed some berry candy fruit. …

Lodala Lorenzo - Bric Saint Ambrogio
Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Barolo - Marchesi di Barolo
Made with the long lasting Nebbiolo grape, this 1976 Barolo tastes much younger than its age. Scents of cherry and leather. In the glass, tastes of blackberries and dark fruits dominate. A very fine wine.
