Croft Port

croft portCroft is one of the most distinguished of all Port houses. Founded in 1588, it is the oldest firm still active today as a Port wine producer.

The company is renowned above all for its Vintage Ports as well as for its range of wood aged reserves and tawnies, time-honoured styles refined by skill and experience passed down the generations.

In spite of its rich heritage and history spanning over four centuries, Croft has never been constrained by tradition. Today, as in the past, it maintains a pioneering spirit, continuing to create innovative new styles such as Croft Pink, the first ever rosé Port.

Behind every great wine producer is a great vineyard. The cornerstone of Croft’s distinctive house style is the famous Quinta da Roêda, described as the jewel of Port wine estates. The wines of this magnificent property, which contains some of the oldest vineyards in the Douro Valley, are the heart of Croft’s Vintage Port blend.

Croft Port, 2011

Vintage Port DOUBLE MAGNUM 3.0L)

RARE DOUBLE MAGNUM FORMAT

** 95 Points - James Suckling **

Tasting note: Deep purple black colour. The complex seductive nose has the archetypal Croft opulence but displays impressive depth, background and reserves of aroma. A rich, powerful fruitiness provides the backdrop for heady scents of blossom and rock rose. Luscious ripe berry fruit flavour surges though the palate. The wine’s velvety texture is underpinned by taut, muscular, perfectly integrated tannins, which provide stamina with an attractive firmness and vigour to the finish. More virile and structured than some recent Vintages from this classic house,

Vintage Port IMPERIAL BOTTLE 6.0L

Rare Imperial Format

** 95 Points - James Suckling **

The near perfect viticultural conditions which prevailed in the Douro Valley in 2011 was bound to allow for great things in Croft's highly regarded Quinta da Roêda. This Quinta always forms the core around which Croft craft their Vintage Port blend, yet in this excellent year all of the blend's components have been sourced from here, producing a scented, exotic and lusciously opulent style. In the words of wine-maker David guimareans, the high perfomance of Quinta da Roêda gave this vintage 'an additional layer of density and depth of flavour' with silky, integrated tannins and powerful grip on the finish.

Croft Port, 2007

Vintage Port MAGNUM

93/100 (Outstanding) Wine Journal

"There is a nice limpidity on this Croft 2007. It is not the power that strikes you but the purity with black cherries, liquorices, violets and a hint of iodine. Very tight and focused. The palate is full-bodied with chewy tannins on the entry, pure blackberry, raspberry, white pepper and Asian spice towards the finish. Very fine focus, very pure and harmonious. Sensuous finish but it just tapers away when I need more grip and assertiveness. Still, this is a lovely Croft." Neil Martin , Wine Journal

Croft Port, 2003

Vintage Port SINGLE 75cl bottle

*** 93 Points - eRobert Parker ***

Vintage Ports are made exclusively from the grapes of one harvest. Bottled after two years in casks, it is in the bottle that the long, slow, ageing process transforms the young wine into a magnificent Vintage Port.
A Croft Vintage is only declared in years of optimum quality. These demanding standards mean that a Croft Vintage might be declared perhaps only two or three times in a decade.

Reviews: A medium intensity Port with a garnet core and mahogany rim. A lovely pronounced nose of figs and prunes, with some walnut characters. Also slightly earthy.

Croft Port, 2002

Quinta da Roeda Vintage Port SINGLE BOTTLE 75cl (Comes in Original Croft box as illustrated)

Another sensational Port from one of the most famous Vintage Port houses, Croft. A blend of traditional Port grapes, picked when the grapes were fully ripe, gives this a deep ruby finish. A luscious body promotes deep, black berry flavours and hints of chocolate. This is a powerful red that winemaker David Guimaraens has done an exceptional job of producing. You will not be disappointed.

Croft Port, 2000

Vintage Port

Reviews: An outstanding port rating 90 points. "A striking, individualistic nose of spring flowers, blackberries, blueberries, and lead pencil shavings emerges from this saturated purple-coloured 2000. Evolved yet expansive, sweet, and generous, it admirably conceals moderately high tannins under a wealth of fruit and glycerin. The aromatic profile and attack merit a score in the mid-nineties, but the finish is short, thus lowering the overall rating. Croft Port, 1995

Quinta do Roeda Vintage Port

*** 90 Points Cellar Tracker ***

The 1995 Croft Roeda Port is an outstanding wine from the very good 1995 vintage.

It is characterised by a deep brown-black, with narrow brick brown rim. Ripe and mature fruit on the nose. Quite finely constituted and complex. Chocolate, butterscotch, prunes and cedar notes – quite exotic. Rounded, luscious, but with good tannic structure. Ripe, chocolatey, fudge flavours. Some jammy fruit, but only on the finish.

Reviews
"Filtered and decanted immediately upon opening. Allowed to breathe about 45 minutes before serving. Did not taste until after breathing.

Croft Port, 1985

Vintage Port

The 1985 will be an early-developing port. It shows aromas that border on overripeness and offers scents of plums and black cherries. Croft Port, 1982

Vintage Port

A medium-boded Croft port, the 1982 vintage port has a light and fruity aroma, backed up by delicious dark fruits on the palate with a sweetness that hints at burnt sugar at times. A well composed port that will perhaps not age as well as other vintage ports from this era, but is beautifully poised for drinking now.

Croft Port, 1970

Vintage Port

From the outstanding 1970 Vintage, an wonderful port scoring 91 points.

A similar russet core, though a little clearer than the ’66. The nose has good definition and focus with an attractive bouquet of cooked meats, mulberry, spice and leather. Light and feminine, although it never really develops the nuance that I was hoping for in the glass. The palate is vigorous, note quite as elegant as the ’66, a little more alcoholic and unrefined, the finish more linear with liquorice, burnt toffee and raisin. Moderate length. Drinking now. Very fine. Neil Martin. Wine Journal.

Rating 91 points (Wine Journal).

Croft Port, 1960

Vintage Port

"Bright tawny with orange flecks, there are whacks of dried fruit and sultanas on the nose, with hints of bitter chocolate and Christmas pudding. The palate is sweet but balanced with a lovely acidity. A fascinating multilayered wine, with the oxidization bringing out maple syrup flavours, coupled with leather and cigar box aromas wrapped around rich dried fruit. Complex, captivating and holding up beautifully." Decanter, Fine Wine Encounter 2009.

The 1960 has a light russet core with deep tawny rim. A lovely soft, mulberry infused nose with a touch of sloes and coca that could do with a tad more delineation.

Croft Port, 1945

Vintage Port - Oporto Bottled - Mid-shoulder

A much deeper colour than the ’42 as one would expect. Quite limpid for a 62-year old with a lovely, elegant nose of ginger, leather, figs, almond and black cherries in the background. Very refined with a sedate feel to it. The palate is just sublime with perfect acidity, rich and decadent for Croft and in a sense, riper than the ’35 thanks to the Indian summer? Powerful, spicy and almost decadent towards the finish with wild honey, heather, fig, raisin and liquorice. Very long – this ’45 flirts with perfection. A gorgeous ’45 port.
