Fonseca Guimaraens, often simply called Fonseca, is one of the largest Port wine houses in Portugal. Manuel Pedro Guimarães established the company in 1822. Although Fonseca is now owned by Taylor Fladgate, David Guimarães, the great-great-great grandson of the founder Manuel Pedro is the head winemaker, and oversees the winemaking and blending.
In the last 40 years, Fonseca has consistently produced outstanding vintage ports with resounding successes in 1963, 1970, 1977, 1985, 1992, 1994 and 1997, which has created demand and, as a result, it can command the highest prices.
Long-lived, the vintage wines are renowned for their quality and intensity of fruit, sheer opulence, structure and balance to last for decades.

Vintage Port
Faint notes of prunes and fig in the nose. The palate is just wonderful: layers of raisiny black fruits, massive tannins and a vice-like grip. Still very backward with a lovely sweet raspberry, prune and raisin finish. Neil Martin, Wine Journal
Rating 93-94 (Outstanding)

Vintage Port
This Port is now beginning to reach its full maturity and is ready for drinking. As it ages further, it will begin to develop gently into a more tawny style Port. This Port should probably be drunk over the next few years although it is still showing remarkable balance and finesse.
Drink from now until 2012

Vintage Port
An outstanding port from a classic vintage. The Fonseca 1970 is now fully mature, and is probably one of the finest glasses of port that you will ever taste. A wine of this quality will age superbly for many decades to come. A magnificent wine with abundant ripe fruit flavours and concentrated tannins. Perfect harmony and balance places this Port amongst the all-time greats.
Robert Parker, renowned critic writes of this Port.... "... it excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavours. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. …

From the good 1967 vintage. This sinqle quinta port has aged gracefully and has a red/garnet hue, with a very broad, browning rim. Rich and quite full nose. Soft and smooth palate with very little tannin remaining. A very attractive bottle.

Vintage Port
Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. It excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavours. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. The 1966 is a top success for that vintage and is fully mature, but will hold for 15 or more years.

Vintage Port
*** 93 Points Robert Parker ***
"Charming, this dark ruby/purple-coloured wine offers a floral, exotic, flamboyant bouquet, a sweet, fleshy style, but not a great deal of weight or massiveness. Heady alcohol, sweet tannin, and a velvety texture make for a gorgeous finish. While I would have preferred to have seen more weight, structure, and intensity, this is an outstanding, albeit lighter than normal Fonseca." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 2000

Vinatge Port
Scoring 97 Parker Points a magnificent Port
Reviews "Fonseca has scored in both the 1991 and 1992 vintages. The 1992 is a majestic young port that should ultimately rival, perhaps even surpass this house's most recent great efforts (1985, 1977, 1970, 1963). This colossal vintage port reveals a nearly opaque black/purple color, and an explosive nose of jammy black fruits, licorice, chocolate, and spices. Extremely full-bodied and unctuously-textured, this multi-layered, enormously-endowed port reveals a finish that lasts for over a minute. It is a magnificent port that will age well for 30-40 years. …

Guimaraens Vintage Port
In undeclared vintages Fonseca bottle Guimaraens, provided the quality of the fruit is sufficient. This has a good depth of colour, with a moderate red-tawny hue. The nose has exotic notes of musky scent and spiced woods, together with some chocolate edged fruit. The palate has an impressive texture and sweetness immediately apparent on entry. Good fruit and a nice backbone of soft tannins. Elegant, with a touch of complexity, with balance, very much in the house style.
