Chateau Haut Brion

Haut Brion is the only property from outside the Médoc to be included in the 1855 Classification. After falling into a state of disrepair the estate was purchased in 1935 by Clarence Dillon, an American financier, since when it has enjoyed a steady and continual resurgence to a position of pre-eminence.
The vineyard is planted to 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Franc. Production is smaller than at the other First Growth Wines, totalling about 20,000 cases, shared between the Grand Vin and a second wine, formerly called Bahans-Haut-Brion but changed in 2007 to Clarence de Haut-Brion in recognition of Clarence Dillon the winemaker responsible for its resurgence.

Fermentation of the red wines takes place in stainless steel vats, after which the wine will spend 22 months, sometimes more, in new oak barrels before being bottled unfiltered.

The style of the Haut Brion is such that it displays text-book Graves characteristics of cigar-box, curranty fruit, earth, smoky spice and cassis. The high Merlot content, compared to the Médoc First Growths, gives it a voluptuous edge.

Chateau Haut Brion, 1987

Pessac-Leognan First Growth Classification

The 1987 has been delicious since bottling, exhibiting a dramatic, earthy, singed-leather, sweet tobacco, and ripe black currant-scented nose. Although not a blockbuster, it offers a medium-bodied, generous, sweet, rich fruitiness, as well as a seductive personality. This fragrant, round, elegant, and delicious Haut-Brion has been fully mature since the early nineties.

Chateau Haut Brion, 1986

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe

93 Points - Parker
96 Points - Wine Journal

"The 1986 Haut-Brion, which I thought should be fully mature by now, remains a backward, highly concentrated, powerful wine with more noticeable tannin than most top vintages. The wine does possesses a tell-tale smoky tobacco and sweet black currant-scented nose, in addition to subtle new oak and minerals scents. This medium to full-bodied, rich, intensely smoky wine has still not reached its plateau of maturity. It is unquestionably the wine of the vintage for Graves, and not far off the pace of the great 1986 first-growth Medocs. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2015".

Chateau Haut Brion, 1983

Pessac-Leognan First Growth Classification

"The fully mature 1983 is a very good wine that has fine depth, rich, soft, fat, lush fruit, and a good measure of soft tannins in the finish. The overall impression is of a forward, ripe, and voluptuous wine". Robert Parker 3rd Edition

Chateau Haut Brion, 1972

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe

Given the vintage, the Haut-Brion could be considered a modest success. Now fully mature and a bit short in fruit, this wine has an open-knit, spicy, earthy bouquet, somewhat angular, medium-bodied flavours. One for the collectors.

Chateau Haut Brion, 1970

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe MAGNUM

*** 90-92 points - Wine Journal ***

Reviews: "Brown rim. Brown sugar, olives and leather nose. Quite rich for 1970. Balanced and very smooth palate. Coffee & sweet red fruits. Fully mature, a highly enjoyable wine (and far cheaper than Latour.) Somewhat under-rated by others. Then again chez Alex Hunt in November 2005. Although a little musty at first, this wine grows and grows on you. A cool, blackberry leaf, cranberry nose with lots of cedar and pine is followed by a tannic, almost rustic, broad-shouldered palate with cedary, tobacco-infused fruit. Very classic in style but suited the venison perfectly.

Chateau Haut Brion, 1962

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe

** 90 points Wine Journal **

Reviews "Haut-Brion can reach its peak more quickly than any other first-growth, yet hold at that plateau of full maturity for decades. I first tasted this wine in the mid-seventies and had not had often. Still extremely rich and fresh, with a huge, fragrant, earthy, smoky, tobacco-scented nose, the wine displays a medium to full-bodied palate, with a wonderful sweetness and softness of fruit, as well as a long, velvety finish. It is a classic Haut-Brion that has been at its peak of maturity for nearly 20 years." Robert Parker

"It is a few years since I tasted the 1962 Haut-Brion.
