Chateau Lafite Rothschild

lafiteThe vineyards of Chateau Lafite Rothschild are found at the northern tip of the Pauillac appellation. The current owners, the Rothschilds of the famous banking dynasty, bought the property in 1866, but this is a different branch of the family from that which purchased Chateau Mouton-Rothschild.

With a base largely of gravel, the vineyard is unsurprisingly dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (71%) with the balance comprising Merlot (25%) Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (1%). Grapes are hand-harvested and vinified. The Grand Vin volume varies greatly according to the vintage, but is frequently less than half the total crop, and is usually no more than 20,000 cases. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats, after which the wine is run off into barrels, 100% new for Lafite itself.

Throughout the 20th century Lafite was dogged by periods of inconsistency, often producing sublime wines but failing to live up to its billing in other years. However since 1994, under the control of Charles Chevallier, Lafite has achieved an admirable level of consistency with some remarkable wines often vying for the title of “Wine of the Vintage”.

In style, Lafite wines are often described as having a perfumed elegance and finesse, to contrast with the more masculine power and structure of Latour or the more exotic and intense flavours of Mouton. In great years the wine has the ability to age for at least 50 years, often longer.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 2003

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classé, Bordeaux
100 Points
Excellent provenance

The 2003 Lafite Rothschild comes as close to perfection as any of the great Lafites made over the past three decades (1982, 1986, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010). This sensational effort came in at 12.7% natural alcohol, it is made in the style of one of this estates great classics, the 1959. Composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color to the rim along with a luxurious bouquet of cedarwood, lead pencil shaving, white chocolate, cocoa and cassis. Fat, rich, opulent and full-bodied with low acidity and stunning seductiveness and complexity, this noble wine possesses a bountiful, generous, heady style.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1942

Pauillac Grand Cru Classe, Bordeaux

Mature mahogany colour, a little cloudy. Plenty of glycerine, unctuous and creamy port like texture, but without the sweetness, which one could expect given that 1948 wasn’t a very ripe vintage. It kept getting better in the glass.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1979

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe,

From the famously tannic 1979 vintage, this Lafite is proving the more dismissive critics from earlier days wrong as it settles harmoniously into maturity with plenty of life and complexity remaining. At K&L, we are champions of great wines from lesser vintages, and here is a perfectly mature First Growth from a lesser vintage that may not be out of reach in price. Fans of classic wines from the Left Bank with preferences that favor the leathery and refined end of the spectrum will find much to appreciate here.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1966

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe
Level base of neck, bin soiled label

*** 96 Points - Wine journal ***
"My God, this is a wonderful mature Lafite. Served blind chez Rosemary George MW it has a definable Pauillac nose with subtle notes of cedar, sous-bois and a touch of dried blood. It has incredible harmony and purity – a bouquet that has you instantly captivated. The palate does not disappoint: a beguiling sense of natural harmony and delineation, not the weight of Latour nor the femininity of Margaux, but a Lafite aiming for understated sophistication. Delicate cedar and cigar box towards the finish that just goes on and on. This bottle vindicates my first encounter in Bordeaux, when it similarly bewitched its audience.
