Much of Mouton’s success is due to the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who assumed control in 1922. He was a dynamic figure who revolutionised much of the running of the estate. He was the first to introduce château-bottling, as early as 1924, and instigated the practice, after the Second World War, of employing a different artist each year to design the label. His greatest achievement was to have Mouton upgraded to 1st Growth Status in 1973, the only change ever to be made to the 1855 Classification.
The vineyard, comprising 75 hectares of mainly gravel-based soils, is planted to 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. Grapes are hand-picked, and the juice is fermented in barrel, not in vat. After fermentation the wine is aged in new oak for 22 months before bottling.
In style the wines have immense appeal, with exotic, powerful aromas of cassis, minerals, tobacco leaf and graphite, backed by an opulence on the palate and impressive length on the finish. What is sure is that Mouton has often produced the “wine of the vintage”.

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe (VTS - label damp affected)
Mahogany core with deep brick rim. The nose is actually better than I anticipated with some dusty black fruits, cedar a touch of game, but it certainly lacks vigour and cohesion. The palate is a little tawdry, slightly hollow with an cooked character that jars against some obvious green berries that found themselves fermenting. Linear towards the dry finish, moderate length.

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe (mid shoulder)

Reviews
"This wine has finally begun to reveal some potential. It has been closed and frightfully tannic for the last decade. The wine exhibits a good dark ruby/garnet color, a sweet nose of cedar, chocolate, cassis, and spices, good ripe fruit and extraction, and a weighty, large-scaled, tannic finish. Although still unevolved, it is beginning to throw off its cloak of tannin and exhibit more complexity and balance. I remain concerned about how well the fruit will hold, but this wine will undoubtedly hit its plateau around the turn of the century. Putting it in the context of what is a largely disappointing range of Mouton-Rothchilds in the decade of the seventies, …

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe
The year Mouton was officially made a "first-growth' was celebrated by a beautiful label done by Pablo Picasso. The wine itself is very oaky and woody, with rapidly fading fruit, this is a wine worth having for the historic significance .

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe
Wassily Kandinsky label
Reviews: Stands up well for a 72. This had a deep red-brown color that was consistent throughout. It showed an intense nose of fresh asparagus which carried into the palate where it was joined by notes of celery. This exceeded expectations and was surprising drinkable for the amount of greenness it had. The half-bottle leftover the next day lost a lot of the asparagus/celery notes, having them replaced by some bell pepper and hints of cabernet fruit (cassis). One for the collectors. Reviews:
"It is ten years since I last encountered this ’71. It unexpectedly has a deeper colour than the ’70, the nose certainly more mature than before, forsaking that mint aroma for meatier, dried blood/ferrous notes. The palate is medium-bodied without the weight and depth of the ’70, but still quite fresh and well-defined at first, though a little “frayed” towards the leafy finish. Fine. Pauillac 1st Growth Classification
Robert Parker writes '... the dark garnet colour and classic sweet, spicy, tobacco, coffee, and black currant aromas are enticing. The wine still has powerful tannin in the finish, which contributes to the dry, austere character this example has always exhibited. One of the more intellectually-styled Moutons, the 1966 is a classic example of the vintage, as well as of the chateau's Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated style. Tasted 10/97 Bordeaux, 3rd Edition.
