Quinta do Noval Nacional, 2011

Vintage Port

Reviews: "Fantastic: 'The legend lives'... "Could be better than the perfect 1994 and equal to the 1963.”
James Suckling gave the maximum score of 100/100 to the recent Quinta do Noval Vintage Nacional 2011!

“This wine is a mysterious phenomenon, a magical wine produced in extremely limited quantities and only in a few years each decade. It is the expression of a terroir and confirms something that is for me a deeply held belief. The Nacional is great because of the grapes and where they come from, not because of anything particular that we do. It has a unique personality, an extraordinary intensity and, even after many years of ageing, retains an astonishing youthfulness.

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 2004

Vintage Port- SINGLE BOTTLE 75cl

We are thrilled to be able to offer Nacional 2004 at the same time. Christian fell in love with the wine after harvest, so the wine was declared but not released. Kept instead under the watchful eye of Technical Director Antonio Agrellos to see how it developed. Considering the pedigree, it comes as no surprise that the wine lived up to their expectations, and so now, 10 years after the harvest, the 2004 is ready for release.

At Quinta do Noval the bud burst occurred mid-March followed by a quick flowering in the end of May due to high temperatures and lack of precipitation. The beginning of maturation occurred in early July, still without any precipitation and with high temperatures.

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 2001

Vintage Port

Q. Do Noval Director Christian Seeley

“Although we declared Quinta do Noval Nacional 2001 officially in 2003, we did not release the wine for sale at the time. Nacional is always a powerful concentrated wine, but in its youth the 2001 was extremely backward and quite closed up, dense and very tannic. Since we had just declared and released the 2000 Nacional, we decided to lay down the 250 cases of Nacional 2001 that were produced and keep them back for release at a later date.”

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1991

Vintage Port

Rich ruby color that is nearly opaque. It presents notes of strawberry, molasses and others mentioned root beer which I did not really get, but thought was worth noting. This Nacional displays excellent concentration and structure, with medium to full-bodied juice. It possesses young blackberry fruit with a unique balsamic component, and shows its fine balance and some powerful tannins that will allow this wine to age for a few decades. A fine Nacional but not a classic, from an unheralded vintage that has a very youthful essence and lingering finish. 93 pts. (HOLD) Roy Hersh

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1982

Quinta do Noval Nacional

86/100 Wine Spectator
90/100 Wine Doctor

Noval is particularly famous for its Nacional, a Port produced in some years only from a 2 hectare parcel at the heart of the Noval vineyard where ungrafted vines survive. This is remarkable, because phylloxera, the root munching aphid that necessitates grafting vines onto resistant American rootstock, is endemic in the Douro

"This a gloriously wild, rich, sensual port with a rich spicy nose and flavour and a sweet, full glorious length and aftertaste" Drink now - 2033. M Broadbent *****

"Pale cherry colour. Evolved spicy, earthy nose with dusty, herby notes.

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1978

Vintage Port

Reviews: Roy Hersh - For the love of Port.
The 1978 Quinta do Noval Nacional - exhibits a rather light ruby hue and offered a generous nose full of dates, raisins and a roasted coffee note that was most appealing. The flavors showed figs and currants with a backdrop of blueberry that lingered long on the palate. This was a youthful if not truly immature wine that needs lots more time in decanter or better yet, in cellar to reach its fruition. It has a bit of a hollow middle and overall lack of depth that may improve as this wine continues to age. Clearly not a big wine now, but time will tell what it is really made of.

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1975

Vintage Port

"Deeper in colour (as you would expect) but not deep for a Nacional, mid-garnet, thin browning rim; rather odd medicinal aromas, stewed plums; soft, sweet plummy fruit, rather simple and lacking structure with a slightly burnt edge, fuller with some grip on the finish but not really satisfying. I suppose this is not so bad for a 1975 though. Drink now and over the next ten years. 14.5. [Deep colour but already looking quite mature, beautiful liquorice and chocolate aromas, elegant concentration of flavour, firm, milk chocolate finish.]" Richard Mayson.

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1963

Noval Nacional (in neck)

Noval is particularly famous for its Nacional, a Port produced in some years only from a 2 hectare parcel at the heart of the Noval vineyard where ungrafted pre phylloxera vines survive.

"Last July I enjoyed this "legend" at Noval and consumed my share of an entire bottle that was opened for our small group of Port journalists. This VP had a very dark ruby color and was clearly from a perfectly stored bottle. The 1963 is as lithe and graceful as a trapeze artist, and showed what perfection in balance is all about. It is not easy for Port to get much better than this. Sweet, spicy, grapey, mint, big, bold, brash are all apt descriptors.

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1962

Vintage Port

***98 Points- Extraordinary!
Robert Parker Jr. Wine Advocate #107/Oct 1996***

Remarkably, the 1962 Nacional exhibited an even more opaque color than the 1970, as well as exquisite richness and concentration. Massive (but not in the Taylor style), this phenomenally concentrated, complex, still youthful vintage port is a tour de force in winemaking, and one of the greatest, can you believe this, young vintage ports I have ever tasted. This wine needs another 5-10 years to reach full maturity as neither the color nor aromatics reveal much development. It could easily have one-hundred years of longevity.
