Chateau Yquem

Chateau d'Yquem is one of the most extraordinary, unique and amazing wines in the world. It is without doubt the worlds greatest sweet wine.

In terms of purity of style and richness, Château d’Yquem out-classes all others in its class. The major contributing factor to the wine’s complexity is the unique set of climatic and geological conditions that combine to form a rare microclimate.

Only 100 hectares are used for each vintage across a variety of the Sauternes terroir. The grapes are harvested by hand, the grapes are picked individually in six tries to ensure that each grape is picked only when fully botrytised. The Château’s selection process is notoriously severe with only one glass of wine produced per vine. On occasion, the wines are not considered worthy of Château d’Yquem and the vintage will be omitted, as was the case in 1951, 1952, 1964, 1972, 1974 and 1992.

Château d’Yquem’s have produced a dry white wine since 1959 - Ygrec (French for ‘Y’).

Chateau Yquem, 1983

Sauternes 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 96 Points - Robert Parker ***

Reviews
"The 1983 ranks among the most concentrated wines from this property over the last 25 years, with a staggering display of extract and a mind-boggling amount of glycerin. The vintage commenced early for d'Yquem, beginning on September 29th and finishing on November 18th. The 1983 is enormous, with huge, honeyed, pineapple, coconut, and caramel flavors, massive extract, and an unctuous quality barely framed by acidity and new oak. The wine has changed little since bottling. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2050." Robert Parker, Wien Advocate 1993.

Chateau Yquem, 1976

Sauterns, 1st Growth Classification

Yquem is without doubt, one of the world's finest wine producers, of whom Robert Parker comments: "There is no other wine in the world like it, and there is no other luxury wine that can possibly justify its price as much as Yquem. The remarkable amount of painstaking labor necessary to produce the nectar known as Yquem is almost impossible to comprehend."

"The 1976 Yquem continues to go from strength to strength. Who can ignore the awesome bouquet of spices, honeyed fruit, pineapples, bananas, coconuts, and overripe melons? This full-bodied, viscous, luscious wine has been absolutely delicious since bottling, given its relatively low acidity and precocious personality.

Chateau Yquem, 1969

Sauternes 1er Grand cru Classe

*** 94 Points Cellar Tracker ***

Reviews
"There is always a high level of star gazing when a bottle of old Yquem shows up. Even an ok bottle like this makes you feel a million bucks. Dark caramel in colour. Apricots on the nose, sweet glycerin. On the palate it is well evolved full of ripe fruit, botrytis and although it is low in vitality it still makes for a superb experience. We can not be unbiased to the star gazing here but this is a good 94" CellarTracker.com

Chateau Yquem, 1962

Sauternes 1er Grand cru Classe, Top shoulder

91 Points Wine Journal.

" Moderate Clear lucid gold with green tints. The nose is very elegant and well defined, touches of wet wool, honey, wood resin and barley sugar (a la Barsac). I wish it had more vigour and complexity, for it is rather overwhelmed by the Coutet and the Suduiraut. The palate is far better than the nose with a lovely creamy, harmonious texture with perfect acidity and balance. Citrus peel, fresh ginger, dried apricot, ginger and orange sorbet with noticeable residual sugar on the finish. This is probably an underrated Yquem given market prices, but the modest nose means I must temper my appraisal.

Chateau Yquem, 1958

Sauternes Premiere Grand Cru Classe

Considered as the greatest white wine in the world, Château d'Yquem, located on a small hill, enjoys a microclimate and an exceptional terroir. The vineyard, which has no fewer than 150 parcels of different soil, is cherished throughout the year, each vine receives an average of 50 treatments per year. The selection is particularly rigorous for the grand vin of château d'Yquem: it is often said that a vine produces only one glass of wine . The harvest is carried out through at least four passes (seven in 1997!) to harvest the grapes at perfect ripeness, with the noble rot.

Chateau Yquem, 1953

Sauternes 1er Grand Cru Classe

A rare bottle from the excellent 1953 vintage.

It had intense nose of vanilla budding with added rum and walnuts, and was delicious on the palate with tropic fruits marinated in honey. All ingredients appeared to be in perfect match. This was eminent wine with beautiful charisma, to be further enjoyed in the next 10-15 years.
