Description

Barca Velha is only declared in exceptional years and is the foundation upon which Casa Ferreirinha has built its reputation. The wine has achieved iconic status.

With just 18,000 bottles produced, rather than the usual 24,000 for Barca Velha (and compared to well over 100K for a Bordeaux First Growth), the 2008 has amazing dark, bold concentration, with perfume and spice saving it from being a brooding monster at this stage. It’s still playing its cards close to its chest, but the balance of alcohol, fruit, substance and character gives a hint of the awesome potential of this first wine of Portugal. It will undoubtedly blossom in time into a legend: a wine that will prove impossible to get hold of.

Intensely coloured, almost opaque. Its delightful aroma is equally intense, reminiscent of very ripe red fruits and black plums. Cinnamon and clove spice, with balsamic, cedar and tobacco box are also evident, allied with very well integrated notes from barrel ageing. Excellent structure - firm, fine tannins that are balanced by clean acidity. The intensity and complexity of this wine continue on the extremely long finish.

Reviews

100 pts Wine Enthusiast - Its aroma is intense and of excellent complexity, with saliency for the bright red fruits, spices such as pepper and clove, balsamic notes to cedar, resin and tobacco box. Also note the notes of asparagus and artichokes, sous-bois and the aromas of wood of excellent quality and in perfect harmony. In the mouth it has an excellent volume, lively and well integrated acidity, intense tannins and notes of red fruits, pepper, cloves and ginger. Its finish is extraordinarily long, elegant and harmonious.
