Description

Warm tawny red in colour with an amber hue corresponding to its advanced maturity. The nose is spirited and nervous, with an array of fruit and nut aromas: grapefruit, apricot, almond and hazelnut, spiced with cinnamon, caramel and cocoa and rich vanilla oak. Charming and velvety on the palate, the grace of the first contact is maintained by a complex sequence of ripe and dry fruit followed by a languorous finish.

It is a fine wine to drink at the end of the meal, to accompany desserts like Portuguese egg puddings, orange puddings, nuts, dried fruits, crème caramel and dried fruit ice-creams. It is a classic Tawny.

This 20 Year Old port is a blend with an average age of 20 years, made from a selection of several lots originating in one of the oldest vineyards in the Douro region - "Quinta do Bom Retiro".

The ageing and maturing experience in the wood change its colour. The red shades give place to brick and yellow colours, to the tones of a sunset. It is an oenological creation from several different lots. Wines are easy to match when they are young but as they grow older the matching process becomes more difficult. Greater knowledge and fine tuning from both sides is required so that, over time, a perfect and long-lasting harmony is reached. Just as it happens with people.

The NV RP 20 Year Old Tawny Port Quinta do Bom Retiro is a single-quinta Tawny coming in with 126 grams of residual sugar and a bar-top cork. It was bottled in February 2020. This seems pretty much on track for what the brand normally shows, but it is especially enticing right now. It shows power, depth and spice. There are classic hints of caramel and a fresh feel. That wonderful freshness is what really sells this elegant Tawny and makes it irresistible. It is impeccably balanced. The lift to the fruit gives this some extra juiciness on the bright finish. On opening, it was a bit more ponderous, but it really woke up a couple of days later. This is pricey for a 20 Year, but it is certainly a terrific one. As always, the end-date drinking window is just a placeholder—these are very resistant and age indefinitely if there is no cork problem, although they are ready on release and do not need aging.
