These 2015 Vintage Port Wines make up The Fladgate Collection, which was announced by the Fladgate Partnership following its tradition of declaring on St. George’s Day. Included in the collection are these 2015 Vintage Port Wines: Taylor’s Quinta de Vargellas and Croft’s Quinta da Roêda as well as a commemorative Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage marking the bicentenary of the company’s foundation in 1815. Announcing the releases, Adrian Bridge, Managing Director of The Fladgate Partnership, noted “The 2015 harvest has produced excellent, but distinctly different wines from our individual properties. Quinta de Vargellas displays all the balance and elegance that are the hallmarks of the property and has the structure and completeness which will allow it to hold up extremely well in the bottle. As we celebrated Fonseca’s bicentenary in 2015, I am delighted that the year has produced Vintage Port of such excellent quality. The Guimaraens 2015 will make superb early drinking, but will not disappoint those who wish to cellar it until a later date. At Quinta da Roêda, our investment in the vineyards continues to reap benefits in terms of consistently first class wines, with the 2015 wines displaying all the grace and refinement of this property.”

2015 Taylor's Vargellas Vintage Port
Deep ruby-black core with a narrow purple-red rim. A classic Vargellas nose, fine, elegant and poised with a linear surge of pure singing, woodland infused with a plummy freshness and hints of citrus and fresh quince. A subtle spiciness, with hints of nutmeg, anise and cacao, emerges from behind the fruit. The tell-tale Vargellas floral scent is more reminiscent of jasmine than the signature aura of violets and mingles with the minty, resin notes of wild herbs. A discreet mineral presence provides an attractively firm edge. Typically of Vargellas, the palate is supported by taut, sinewy tannins and the grip of the finish delivers a burst of clean, fresh berry fruit flavour. A very fine single-quinta Vintage Port, confident and in perfect balance.

2015 Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port
Opaque purple-black at the centre with a very thin, purple edge. A classic Fonseca nose redolent of heady, woodland fruit, powerful but also very fine and complex. The dense blackberry and blackcurrant aromas form the backdrop for a display of fresh, minty, balsamic scents and resin notes of gum cistus and wild herbs. Discreet hints of exotic wood, liquorice and black pepper provide an additional dimension of complexity. The thick, tightly-woven tannins provide both firmness and volume to the palate which is built around a core of dense, dark berry fruit. Plummy, raspberry flavours emerge on the long, luscious finish, giving it an attractive crispness and lift. Fonseca’s 200th anniversary year has produced an exceptional Guimaraens Vintage Port, expressive and approachable but with the stamina to improve over many years in the cellar.

2015 Croft Quinta de Roeda Vintage Port
Intense purple-black centre surrounded by a vivid magenta rim. A typical Quinta da Roêda Vintage Port nose made up of a rich plump dark berry compote infused with exotic notes of ripe tropical fruit and the subtle pungency of wild herbs. Warm notes of liquorice, dark chocolate and spice contribute to the wine’s opulent character. The palate is smooth, round and full of rich, jammy flavour. The wine’s silky texture conceals the firm, well-knit tannins which emerge on the finish to provide an attractive firmness and grip. Characteristically of the 2015 Vintage Ports, the wine is immediately appealing but will continue to gain in elegance and refinement over the next three decades.
