1970 Vintage Report

Italian: 1970 was an outstanding vintage for the wine regions of Tuscany and Piedmont. The 1970 vintage produced rich, structured, full bodied wines that are still drinking well today.

Bordeaux: An outstanding vintage against which others are compared. The 1970 vintage is the best vintage between the outstanding years of 1961 and 1982. Perfect weather led to huge crop that set a record at the time but was also of a high quality across all regions. The wines generally have a dark colour, are fragrant, have full body and a richness of fruit. The wines produced are consistent and will continue to drink well for decades to come.

Port: A classic Vintage that was declared by all the major port houses. The port-wines have great balance, good structure, and will age superbly for decades to come. 1970 is one of the finest Port vintages for the last 50 years.

1970 Dow Vintage Port, 1970
Vintage Port (SAVE £10 Was £129.95 now £119.95
Description: Reviews: Sweet, voluptuous bouquet. Coffee and cinnamon tastes. So beautifully balanced and elegant. Stunningly poised. A 1970 like this is sheer perfection and exactly what great, mature Vintage Port should be. Serena Sutcliffe , CUISINE & WINE ASIA 2008 VOLUME 12 01/01/2008 “Exceptionally deep crimson with remarkably little evolution and few orangey hints. Very lively, even a hint of orange peel. Lots of concentration and life. Quite animal too. Very sweet and impressive with a great combination of richness and structure. This is serious wine with a serious future. Long and well balanced”. Jancis Robinson , www.jancisrobinson.com 01/01/2004 “Youthful looking dark, vibrant purplish-ruby colour with enticing mint, licorice and raspberry fruit intertwined on the nose and palate. The '70 Dow is still on the upswing and the structure depicts that this VP will only continue its fine evolution and actually improve. Great depth of flavours and a streak of tobacco leaf barely perceptible on the unbelievably lengthy finish”. Roy Hersh , Roy's Port Wine Cellar Reduction Party 01/01/2004 “1970 produced some truly great wines which are only just ready to broach. Dow and Graham fall into this category and must rank among the 20th century’s great vintage ports”. Richard Mayson , Decanter Magazine 01/12/2001

1970 Warre Vintage Port, 1970
Vintage Port
Description: “Very serious wine, still challenging, with almonds, figs and prunes, all dribbled with bittersweet chocolate. Warm and embracing…”. Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecker , The Wall Street Journal 03/02/2006 “Gloriously vibrant wet violets nose. What a marvellous mouthful of sweet, voluptuous roses and raisins. Superb – and so youthful”. Serena Sutcliffe , Sotheby’s Catalogue 17/07/2002 "…sweet, full-bodied, rich, almost too rich, yet not overpowering, with the perfect weight and balance I expect from Warre at its best." Michael Broadbent , Vintage Wine 01/01/2002

Cockburn Vintage Port, 1970
Vintage Port
Description: The 1970 Cockburn is only just coming into full maturity. It is typical of the house: full-bodied, rich, alcoholic and spirited. The wine is meaty, chocolaty, spicy, full-bodied, big and powerful. Firm, mature appearance. Mature, meaty, earthy hue. Lovely texture. Still has firm acidity. Good mature flavours. Lots of structure still. Good length and pleasantly mature. 16.5/20 (Wine Doctor November 2004)

Croft Vintage Port, 1970
Vintage Port
Description: From the outstanding 1970 Vintage, an wonderful port scoring 91 points. A similar russet core, though a little clearer than the ’66. The nose has good definition and focus with an attractive bouquet of cooked meats, mulberry, spice and leather. Light and feminine, although it never really develops the nuance that I was hoping for in the glass. The palate is vigorous, note quite as elegant as the ’66, a little more alcoholic and unrefined, the finish more linear with liquorice, burnt toffee and raisin. Moderate length. Drinking now. Very fine. Neil Martin. Wine Journal. Rating 91 points (Wine Journal).

Fonseca Vintage Port, 1970
Vintage Port (UK Harrods)
Description: An outstanding port from a classic vintage. The Fonseca 1970 is now fully mature, and is probably one of the finest glasses of port that you will ever taste. A wine of this quality will age superbly for many decades to come. A magnificent wine with abundant ripe fruit flavours and concentrated tannins. Perfect harmony and balance places this Port amongst the all-time greats. Robert Parker, renowned critic writes of this Port.... "... it excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavours. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. The 1970, of course, is a powerful Fonseca with an exotic bouquet and lush, creamy, multidimensional flavours.” Parker Rating 93/100 (outstanding)

Graham Vintage Port, 1970
Vintage Wine (UK)
Description: *** 93 Points (Parker) *** "...a definite Bordeaux-like nose! Well defined, foursquare at first, opening up nicely with maraschino cherries, cloves, burnt wood/embers and bergamot, gaining intensity all the time in the glass. The palate is very harmonious and elegant. Fleshy, harmonious, seductive on the palate with allspice, nutmeg and ginger sprinkled over the viscous finish and finally, freshly rolled tobacco on the aftertaste. Good length, powerful like many of the 1970 ports continue to be. Superb. Drink now-2020+ Neil Martin Wine Journal Tasted September 2009. "The 1970 is a monumental vintage port and one of the greats of the vintage. It begs to be drunk now, although it will last for at least another two decades." Parker Buying Guide 1989. Drink from now until 2025

Quinta do Noval Vintage Port, 1970
Vintage Port
Description: The 1970 Quinta do Noval remains a young, unevolved Port, graceful, youthful, and complex. The huge nose of liquorice, smoke, jammy black-cherry and cassis fruit is followed by a wine of seamless components, all super-packed with gorgeously pure fruit, yet the wine is not heavy or overbearing. There is a real sense of elegance to this Quinta do Noval. This Port has reached full maturity and remain there until 2030

Taylor's Vintage Port, 1970
Vintage Port
Description: Robert Parker writes... "This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades. Their tawnys are also among the very best, though somewhat expensive. The 1970 is fabulous, a broodingly dense-coloured port that has all the signs of future greatness." Parker Buyers Guide. Parker rating 96/100 (Outstanding)
