1983 Vintage Report

Bordeaux: A tropical humid heat-wave in August led to some over-ripening in some regions. Those Chateau who adopted careful selection produced some outstanding wines. Those from the Margaux region were probably the greatest of the decade. St Julien and Pauillac also turned out very good wines. The irregularity means that no single characteristic defines the vintage. The wines are now at the peak of their maturity.

Port: A great classic vintage, with concentrated, rich and potent wines. General declaration of vintage.

Cockburn Vintage Port, 1983
Vintage Port
Description: The 1983 Cockburn rates an exceptional 95/100 by Robert Parker. Reviews "This house tends to produce quite full-bodied, rich, alcoholic, spirited vintage ports that offer meaty, chocolaty, spicy, full-bodied, alcoholic flavours at the expense of elegance.... The 1983 Cockburn was inserted [in a tasting] as a ringer. I was surprised to find out, upon revealing the wines, that the massive blockbuster of the tasting was the 1983." Parker, Buying Guide 2nd Ed 1989.

Description: An outstanding port scoring 90 points on the Parker rating. "This is an extraordinary house that seems to have been particularly successful with its vintage port since 1977.The 1983 is rich, concentrated, very fruity, and magnificently perfumed, suggesting that it is going to mature early, long before the 1977. Fonseca Vintage Port, 1983
Vintage Port
Description: Allow 5 working days for delivery of this product. An outstanding Port rating 92/100 from an outstanding vintage. Robert Parker writes of this port... "Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. If Fonseca lacks the sheer weight and power of a Taylor, Dow or Warre, or the opulent sweetness and intensity of a Graham, it excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavors. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. When it is young, it often loses out in blind tastings to the heavier, weightier, more tannic wines, but I always find myself upgrading my opinion of Fonseca after it has had 7-10 years of age. The 1983 is magnificently scented, full-bodied, creamy, rather forward, but showing great length and character. Parker Rating 92/100 (Outstanding) Drink from now to 2030

Graham Vintage Port, 1983
Vintage Port
Description: An outstanding port rating 92 points. Reviews: Graham is another great port house, producing one of the deepest-colored and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous. The 1983, like most vintage ports, seems more forward than normal but has a great depth of very ripe, viscous, unctuous, plummy, tarry fruit and significant tannin in its long finish. It is black-purple in color. This is is certainly one of the top two or three ports of this vintage, and better than the excellent 1980. Parker Buying Guide 1989 Drink from now to 2025

Taylor's Vintage Port, 1983
Vintage Port
Description: An outstanding port scoring 94/100 parker points. Review: This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades. Their tawnys are also among the very best, though somewhat expensive. The 1983 is wonderfully aromatic and so perfumed (a characteristic of this charming vintage), yet powerful, long and deep on the palate. Drink from now to 2030

Warre Vintage Port, 1983
Vintage Port
Description: Light red colour with just a touch of purple showing through. Warre has drier firm style, less show more workman-like but with elegance and what the Symingtons call “florals”. The style at 25 years is charming. It’s above all harmonious with a dried fruit and almonds undercurrent mixed with a pinch of cocoa and tea leaf. It has fine acidity and length with just the right bite in the back end. Anthony Gismondi , Gismondi 07/12/2008 "Perfumed chocolate and spice nose. Floral hints, rich palate. Great elegance". Decanter Magazine 01/12/2006 Parker rating 90/100 Outstandng
