About Tawny Port

Tawny port is a type of fortified wine that comes from the Douro Valley in Portugal. It is a style of port wine that is aged in wooden barrels, typically made from oak. The aging process imparts a tawny colour to the wine, as well as a mellow and nutty flavour profile.

Tawny port comes in various styles, primarily distinguished by the length of aging and the characteristics that develop during that time. The aging process occurs in wooden barrels, which imparts specific flavors and colors to the wine. The age indications on the label give consumers an idea of the style and complexity of the tawny port.

Tawny Port Styles

  • Tawny Port This is the basic style of tawny Port and generally has no specific age designation on the label. It is a blend of wines from different vintages, and it tends to have a lighter colour and a more straightforward flavor profile compared to aged tawnies
  • Reserve Tawny Port A Reserve Tawny Port may indicate that the wine has undergone a more selective process during production. This could involve careful selection of grapes, specific vineyard sites, or longer aging periods.
  • 10-Year Old Tawny Port A 10-year-old tawny Port is a blend of wines with an average age of 10 years (although this does not have to be an exact number). This style often exhibits a more pronounced amber color and develops richer flavors, including notes of caramel, toffee, and dried fruits.
  • 20-Year Old Tawny Port A 20-year-old tawny port is a blend of wines with an average age of 20 years. The extended aging results in a wine with a deeper amber or tawny color and a more complex flavor profile. It may showcase additional nuances of nuts, spices, and a velvety texture.
  • 30-Year Old Tawny Port A 30-year-old tawny port is a blend of wines with an average age of 30 years. This style is characterized by a deep amber or even brown color, with highly developed and intricate flavors. It can exhibit a wide range of aromas, including dried fruits, nuts, and subtle hints of spices.
  • 40-Year Old Tawny Port a blend of wines with an average age of 40 years. This style is known for its intense concentration of flavors, remarkable complexity, and a deep, rich color. The aging process imparts a smooth and silky texture, with a lingering finish.
  • 50-Year Old Tawny Port A new category to showcase wines with an average age of over 50 years. These are wines that are marvellously concentrated and complex. Intense, they all but explode in the mouth, filling your palate with aromatic flavours that will astound your senses.
  • Very Very Old Tawny Port A new category for blends of rare wines of exceptional age. These wines are very old due to the prolonged exposure to oxidative aging in wooden casks. They are true rarities and som eof the most profound Ports in existence.
  • Colheita Port These single vintage Tawnies are aged in cask for a minimum seven years and present a wide range of colours from golden red to tawny, depending on their age. Their bouquet and flavour also develop over time to create different style Tawnies.

    Storing and Serving Tawny Port

Tawny Ports generally have T-stoppers and should be stored upright. The Port has developed and matured in the barrel and so when bottled they will not improve with storage - nor should they degrade. Tawny Ports should not require decanting but some wine-makers prefer minimal filtering so they may contain a fine sediment. We recommend serving slightly chilled in a white wine glass so that the aromas can develop. The wine has already undergone oxidisation in the barrel so will last a few months in a restoppered bottle.
