1948 Wine and Port Vintage

Bordeaux: An excellent vintage that had the misfortune to fall between two legendary vintages. Often when Bordeaux has three outstanding vintages in a row, one is often forgotten. The wines have aged extremely well and the best wines still tend to make excellent drinking today. 1948 wines will last for many years to come.

Vintage Port: 1948 was a very good port vintage that was only declared by 9 shippers. It was a seven year wait after this until the next declared vintage.

Chateau Haut Brion, 1948

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe

Chateau Haut-Brion has one of the longest and most interesting histories of any Bordeaux vineyard. The property derives its name from an ancient Celtic term “Briga.” Loosely translated, this means a rise or mound in the land. This unique terroir was first prized for growing grapes to produce Bordeaux wine close to 600 years ago!

Chateau Haut Brion has an almost, unequaled track record for quality and its ability to age and evolve. This bottle from the excellent but overlooked 1948 vintage will still offer a unique drinking experience.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1948

Pauillac Grand Cru Classe, Good label in-neck

Mature mahogany color, a little cloudy. Plenty of glycerine, unctuous and creamy port like texture, but without the sweetness, which one could expect given that 1948 wasn’t a very ripe vintage. It kept getting better in the glass.

Fonseca Port, 1948

Vintage Port

1948 Fonseca Vintage Port – James Suckling had bestowed 100 points on this VP. Tawny-centered color with a light yellowish edge, with surprisingly light color overall, not what I am used to. In contrast to the massive masculine style of the Taylor, this showed the smooth elegance and feminine style of a great well-aged vintage Port. It exhibits soft, silky and mouth coating with gobs of cherry and sweet cranberry fruit, along with an incredibly complex and everlasting finish.

Madeira, 1948

MBV - Malvasia - Bottled by Barbeito

This is a rare and limited release of the 1948 Madeira from the family cellars. The bottles are in perfect condition. There is something ethereal about tasting such a rare vintage. The 1948 Malvasia is very dry as one would expect from this style of Madeira. There is a huge amount happening on the complexity front with some bitter nut skin notes with dried flowers and citrus pith. Although quite dry, this does not come across as too severe. An electric wine that is astonishingly refreshing. Massive finish that goes on and on.

Taylor's Port, 1948

Vintage Port (unlabelled - embossed capsule - level in neck)

From the very good 1948 vintage, this very rare Taylors vintage port is one of the finest ports ever made

This is one of the finest ports I have ever tasted! The 1948 Taylor strong tawny colour. On the nose there was a wonderful coffee, chocolate and tobacco with an alluring herbal aroma. On the palate this port has a luscious mouth-feel and a layered incredibly complex layers of caramel, chocolate and coffee. This continued with an incredible log persistent finish. Spalletti

Vino Santo, has been made in Tuscany since at least medieval times, and was probably named 'holy wine' because of its use during the Mass.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1948

Vintage Port

Warre’s Vintage port wines combine elegance, length and balance whilst still retaining the underlying rich opulence of great Vintage Port. This unsurpassed style is derived from the inherent characteristics of Warre’s two principal vineyards: Quinta da Cavadinha and Quinta do Retiro Antigo. They complement each other very well. Cavadinha’s location, aspect and altitude translate into a cooler ripening cycle providing the freshness, fine subtle floral aromas and ideal acidity, the latter contributing significantly to the wines’ longevity. Retiro Antigo’s location in the hotter Rio Torto Valley,

Baron de Lustrac, 1948

Armagnac 1948 Vintage

Armagnac is a grape brandy from the Gascony region of South-Western France. Its closest relative is cognac, another grape brandy from an appellation located about 100 miles north of Armagnac. Armagnac even though it is related to and often confused with cognac, armagnac is very different with regards to its grapes, terroir, distillation, élevage, blending, aromas, tastes and textures. In truth, France's two finest brandies made from wine are not very much alike at all.

Armagnac pre-dates cognac by about 150 years but never achieved the widespread sales figures that its relatives in the Charente obtained.

Chateau Margaux, 1948

Margaux, 1er Grand Cru Classe - in neck

he 1948 Margaux had pleasing aromas of wafer and bread along with forward cassis and a hint of tobacco. There was great nuttiness here, but its palate was a bit sweet, almost cough syrupy. It had a full, gritty finish but was a touch medicinal (90). John Capon review 2011

Graham Port, 1948

Vintage Port

5 Stars - Michael Broadbent.

Rich coffee/caramel flavour. Incredibly concentrated and rich, almost syrup like in its intensity. Graham's 1948 is a truly magical Vintage with great class and power, still youthful in colour and showing continuing ageing potential. This wine confirmed Graham's as a first division Vintage house.

Reviews:
"Warm, open and inviting rosehip colour. Delicious fruit, fig, crisp, liquorice. Failry sweet, lean but lovely with hot finish." Score: 5 stars Michael Broadbent.
