1957 Wine and Port Vintage

Italian: The 1957 Italian vintage was a strong candidate for the ‘vintage of the decade’ in what was a run of solid vintages between 1954 and 1958. The main regions of Tuscany and Piedmont produced rich, full bodied wines. The 1957 wines are mature, but heavy-weights such as Brunello and Barolos will still keep for many years to come. These would make a brilliant 65 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary celebration this year.

Bordeaux: A very good vintage. A cold summer led to a small crop and wines that had extremely high acidity. The high acidity has enabled the wines to last well beyond later, more celebrated, vintages. Well-stored examples of 1957 wines will still be very drinkable now.

Portugal: 1957-vintage-portThe 1957 was a good vintage, although not generally declared. 1957 Port wines are very difficult to get hold of due to the tiny production.

D'Oliveiras Madeira, 1957

Old wine Madeira

Madeira is made on the volcanic island of the same name, situated in the Atlantic ocean some 400 miles off the North African coast. This sub-tropical island was discovered in 1419 by the Portuguese. Madeira is the Portuguese word for wood or timber. This sweet, amber-tinged Madeira, has keen acidity and a long and mellow finish, with a certain delicacy.

Intense, nutty, mildly sweet. Lots of decanting time is needed to deepen and smooth out the rough edges.

Review:
The 1957 Colheita Tawny Port was seen before, but it's worth revisiting in the USA, since it's a great wine. This is also the new 2015 bottling. It has 127 grams per litre of residual sugar. It is stunning how youthful this is. Lush and rich on opening, it has mature flavours that emerge, easily demonstrating the complexity and concentrated aromatics one expects. Gripping on the finish, this delivers fruit flavour and seems to linger indefinitely.

Barolo, 1957

Giacomo Borgogno - Riserva

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1957

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe

Classifications often fail to reflect the current state of a chateau, and that's certainly the case for this Pauillac Fifth Growth. Chateau Lynch-Bages makes rich, powerful, full-bodied wines capable of long life.

Very cedary and "old style". Remarkable. It has lost all its hardness. Liquorice and cinnamon. Serena Sutcliffe, MW

Niepoort Port, 1957

Colheita Port

"A green rim with a tawny core, sediment too. A deep, spicy nose shows dried spice and fleshy tamarind. In the mouth, it’s very concentrated, spicy and lively, with liquorice and darker treacle toffee notes. There’s a trace of bitterness to its slightly spirity finish, but it’s deliciously spicy with plenty of vigour." Sarah Amhed, The Wine Detective

An independent family business since 1842, through five generations. With the position of "niche player", Niepoort's mission is to maintain the production of distinctive ports and Douro wines, combining centuries-old tradition with innovation.

Recioto, 1957

Castello d'Illasi - Masi

"Recioto," as in "Recioto della Valpolicella," refers to a dessert wine made from grapes that were dried on mats after picking. This process turns the grapes closer to raisins, concentrating the flavors. The wines are lovely and taste how you'd expect raisins-turned-wine to taste, rich and sweet.

It is made from the Vernatsch-Schiava grape and a very small proportion of Lagrein. The extremely favourable climatic conditions combined with very steep vineyards result in a dark ruby wine, finely scented, soft and velvety on the palate.
