The 1958 vintage gave Bordeaux a small, light, but not unpleasant vintage; however, most wines are more than likely to be past their prime. The Port vintage was good and partially declared, and Italy struck gold again with some fabulous Barolo and Brunello. Any of these wines would make a fabulous wine gift for a 68th Anniversary or birthday.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Barolo 1958 Fontanafredda
  • Madeira 1958 MMV Boal Madeira Wine
  • Warres Vintage Port 1958

  •
This Year in History: Fun Fact: First broadcast of the long-running BBC Television children's programme Blue Peter.
Eurovision Winner: France with the song " Dors Mon Amour" by Andre Ciaveau
    Top Grossing Movie: South Pacific

Italian: 1958 was a good year for Italian heavyweights such as Barolo and Brunello, which were built to last. Well-stored examples of 1958 wines such as these still make very good drinking today, and would make great wine gifts for a birthday or anniversary celebration.

Portugal: 1958 ports represent a good year with some fragrant and delicate Vintage Ports, despite the rather damp weather conditions throughout. This year was declared by some, but not all, of the major Port houses.

    Madeira, 1958

MMV - Boal - Bottled by Barbeito *

This is a rare and limited release of the 1958 Madeira from the family cellars. The bottles are in perfect condition. There is something ethereal about tasting such a rare vintage.

    Tasting Notes
The 1958 Boal is medium sweet as one would expect from this style of Madeira. There is a huge amount happening on the complexity front with some bitter nut skin notes with dried flowers and citrus pith. Flavours of caramel, cacao, toffee, dates, roasted coffee, smoke, and raisin. While the texture of Bual Madeira is rich, it is high in acidity, making the wine less sticky than Port. An electric wine that is astonishingly refreshing with an extraordinarily long finish.

    Sandeman, 1958

    Vintage Port
    Half Bottle (37.5cl)

    Sandeman 1958 Vintage Port

The 1958 vintage was not universally declared, yet in the right hands it has produced wines of considerable charm and longevity. Sandeman’s example offers a rare opportunity to experience a fully mature Port from the late 1950s.

In the glass, it shows a warm amber-garnet hue with a broad tawny rim, reflecting many decades of careful bottle ageing. The bouquet is beautifully evolved, revealing layers of dried cherry, fig and date, alongside notes of walnut, cedarwood, antique leather and gentle spice.

On the palate, the wine is graceful and harmonious. The structure has softened into a silky, rounded texture, while flavours of dark fruit compote, caramelised nuts and cocoa unfold steadily.

    Spanna, 1958

    F.lli Berteletti

Spanna has often been cited by wine experts as one of Italy’s greatest ageing wines. Spanna’s longevity can be attributed, at least in part, to the addition of smaller amounts of less tannic, more acidic grape varieties. Tasting notes: The nose opens up beautifully after about an hour and the wine has gorgeous ripe and sweet fruit, nice acidity, and perfectly softened tannins.

    Constantino Port, 1958

    Vintage Port

The 1958 Constantino Vintage Port is a rare and charming survivor from a lesser-declared vintage, offering a glimpse into mid-20th-century Portuguese winemaking from one of the Douro’s traditional producers. Constantino, founded in the late 19th century, was known for producing solid, classically styled Ports, and the 1958 is a particularly elegant and mature expression, now over six decades in bottle.

On the nose, the wine opens with delicate, evolved aromas of dried cherry, orange peel, and spiced fig, interwoven with hints of leather, polished wood, and floral potpourri. There’s a fine oxidative character that adds depth, bringing in subtle notes of walnut, old books, and sweet herbs.
