The 1962 vintage for Bordeaux was slightly overshadowed by the magnificent 1961, but it still produced some very good wines. Stand outs include Château Cheval Blanc, Petrus and Mouton Rothschild, and some very nice Sauternes. Both Burgundy and Italy enjoyed another very good vintage and top examples of both Brunello and Barolo should still be drinking well. Any of these wines would make a fabulous wine gift for a 64th Anniversary or birthday.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Palmer Port 1962 Single Harvest Tawny Port
  • Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac 1962 Reserve Joseph Millesime Vintage Armagnac
  • Chateau Doisy Vedrines 1962 Barsac
  • Chianti 1962 Brolio Ricasoli
  • Taittinger 1962 Champagne Reims Extra Dry
  • Barolo 1962 Terre del Barolo Riserva

Bordeaux: 1962 wines represent an outstanding vintage that was unfortunately overshadowed by legendary 1961. Consequently, it is one of the most underrated vintages still available. Good weather in the summer and harvest led to what, at the time, was a record crop. The wines were delightful and well proportioned across all regions from the start, and the top wines have maintained this quality to this day.

Italian: An excellent vintage across the main regions of Piedmont and Tuscany. The 1962 wines produced exhibit a deep colour, rich intensity and good structure. The top quality Italian reds such as Barolo and Brunello are still drinking well today.

Portugal: Although the year was not a general declaration, some very good vintage and single quinta ports were made. Now fully mature, the 1962 ports still have good structure and finish and will last a few more years with good cellaring. There are some outstanding Colheita Ports that were made.

    Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1962

    Nacional, Vintage Port
    ** 98 Points Robert Parker **
    Rewaxed- High Shoulder

Quinta do Noval Nacional is undoubtedly one of the most legendary fortified wines in the world. It is produced from a small area at the heart of the Quinta do Noval vineyard planted with ungrafted vines that have remained untouched by Phylloxera

    ***98 Points- Extraordinary!***
Robert Parker Jr. Wine Advocate #107/Oct 1996***

Remarkably, the 1962 Nacional exhibited an even more opaque color than the 1970, as well as exquisite richness and concentration. Massive (but not in the Taylor style), this phenomenally concentrated, complex, still youthful vintage port is a tour de force in winemaking, and one of the greatest, can you believe this, young vintage ports I have ever tasted.

    Salice, 1962

    Leone de Castris - Riserva

Salice Salentino is a DOC of the Puglia wine region in south-eastern Italy. Its original incarnation exclusively covered red wines, but the rules were modified first in 1990 and then again in 2010, and now permit white and rose wines too. The catchment area for the wines centers on the small town of Salice on the Salento peninsula, and spreads out to the north and west.

    Taittinger, 1962

    Champagne Reims, Extra Dry

Aromas of green apple, citrus fruit and baked red apple intermingle with mineral and brioche notes in this fine vintage champagne from Taittinger. The bubbles have now almost resolved, a result of many years of ageing however the autolytic classic champagne flavours still linger.

Presented in a magnum format, this large bottle not only emphasises the prestige of the vintage but also allows the wine to retain freshness for longer once opened. A majestic centrepiece for collectors and a truly memorable choice for milestone celebrations. Drink now or enjoy over the coming years.

    Tasting Notes:
Deep mahogany-tawny with golden glints. The bouquet is intensely developed, revealing aromas of dried figs, dates, roasted chestnuts, caramelised orange peel, coffee and fine spice.

    Pommard, 1962

    Pommard- Pierre Ponnelle

Pierre Ponnelle was a respected 19th/20th-century négociant house in Beaune, producing a wide range of Côte d’Or wines. Their Pommard bottlings were sourced from the commune’s robust vineyards, noted for firm structure and long ageing potential. The 1962 vintage in Burgundy was excellent, producing wines with concentration, balance, and longevity — among the best of the decade.

Colour: Originally deep ruby, now brick-garnet with age.
Nose: Mature tertiary bouquet – dried cherry, forest floor, leather, sous-bois, tobacco, and faint game. Some bottles may show truffle or mushroom notes typical of aged Pinot Noir.
