1972 Wine and Port Vintage
Vintage Summary and Recommendations: A short summary of the 1972 Vintage with our top recommendations 1972 Wine and Port
The 1972 vintage was challenging for both Port and wine production in Europe. In Portugal's Douro Valley, the 1972 vintage was generally not declared by most Port houses. The weather conditions during the growing season were unfavorable, leading to wines that lacked concentration and depth. In Europe, including Italy, the 1972 vintage was also challenging due to adverse weather conditions. The vintage was characterized by a cool and wet growing season, which led to difficulties with grape ripening and resulted in wines that lack depth and concentration. Any of these wines would make a fabulous 54 year old wine gift for an Anniversary or birthday.
Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:
This Year in History: The Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Jesus Christ Superstar makes its West End debut. Luxembourg wins Eurovision with the song "Apres Toi" by Vicky Leandros and Zinedine Zidane, Football Player, Star attacking midfielder, led the French national team for over 10 years and. He helped France win the 1998 FIFA World Cup Championship, scoring two goals in the final match.

Bordeaux: Bordeaux 1972 wines are generally characterised by having good colour, with dryness and high acidity. However, the style was for early drinking and very few examples exist today. The growing season was difficult with the grape development held back by inclement weather - this did not allow the grapes to fully ripen by harvest time. However, sweet wines from Sauternes and Barsac of this year are very good.
Italian: Only a small crop of 1972 wine was produced in Italy and the wines are now very rare. The growing season was held back by inclement weather in the main Italian wine regions of Piedmont and Tuscany. Tuscany produced a small crop of Brunello and Chianti, generally characterised as having good colour, high acidity and some dryness. The best of the vintage originates from the more southerly regions.
Portugal: A good vintage that was not declared, some vintage port and single quintas were produced in this year. Port wines from 1972 are now fully mature but well stored examples will last for many years more.
