1977 Wine and Port Vintage

Italian: 1977 was a good vintage for Italian Wines. Top regions such as Tuscany and Piedmont produced rich, full bodied wines. The wines are fully mature but will still make good drinking today.

Bordeaux: 1977-vintage-portPoor weather throughout the growing season led to a very small crop of thin, light 1977 wines, most of which were drunk within a few years of the vintage. As a result, wines originating from this vintage are rare.

Spain: A few top producers made very good wine – for example, Martínez Bujanda and Salceda – but most of it was run-of-the-mill and was drunk as joven. A meagre 1% achieved Gran Reserva status.

Vintage Port: The 1977 port vintage was a classic Port vintage that was declared by all the major port houses. Even after more than thirty years, the ports are only just becoming approachable. They will last for many more decades. The port wines are concentrated, complex, well structured and balanced. Marked by strong tannins, these wines have great finesse and staying power.

1977 Warre's Vintage Port, 1977

Vintage Port (Comes in a Dark Mocha Leather effect gift box as illustrated + FREE UK Mainland standard 3-5 day delivery).

The Queen served Warres's 1977 Port to the Chinese Premier at the state visit in 2015.

Reviews:

Rich and highly concentrated, it has evolved into to open into a superb Port. Fragrant cassis and prunes nose, fleshy texture, loaded with ripe berry flavours, mellow tannins and a lush fruity finish. Powerful, yet impressively balanced. The 1977s have reached the middle stage of what will prove to be a long and distinguished life. Hugely enjoyable now and it will only get better.

"This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavourful vintage port. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop, and have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style.

Through many generations, the Company was run by several representatives of the Kopke family, obtaining an excellent reputation for its wines.

Reviews:
Dark tawny with orangey-red highlights. I wouldn't quite call it mahogany in color, but it's close. Very dark, and lots of brown.
Nose: As is typical, lots of (to me) Madeira-like notes.

Sandeman

New

40 Year Old Tawny Port (presented in Sandeman gift box)

Sandeman is a regular Decanter World Wine Awards Gold- and Trophy-winner for its supremely refined tawnies. This has lovely lifted aromas and flavours of chocolate- covered sultanas and orange peel. Seductive and creamy with perfect poise for its age.

Deep and intense, with aromas of vanilla, oak and honey, Sandeman 40 Year Tawny Port has wonderful tasting notes of dried fruits, spices, and nut. Serve chilled to enjoy each layered flavour to the max.

Dark raisin and dried apricot flavors manifest on this immensely dark, old gold hued wine. Enormous concentration, as with the initially, almost painful acidity that comes through the spirit.

"...it's outstanding quality... Medium ruby-red. Aromas of milk chocolate, plum, mint and violet. Full-bodied, with medium sweetness and lots of berry and cherry fruit. Very fruity and fresh. Long and lively. Delicious now, but will improve."
James Suckling , Wine Spectator 2007

Review:
1977 Taylor's Vintage Port
Robert Parker writes.... "This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades.

Dow's Port, 1977

Vintage Port MAGNUM

Please note that this is a rare magnum format (1.5 L) presented in a Dows presentation case.

Medium cranberry red center and slight bricking on the edge. Intoxicating floral fragrance that filled the room, during its nine hour decant; accented by anise, plum and raspberry notes and a bit of spirit. Fresh, fleshy grape, dark cherry and fig flavors melded with underpinnings of licorice, chocolate and warming spirit. It's developing into a stunning middle-aged Port at 34 years of age, with little signs of nearing peak yet. Rich and multi-faceted, smooth and velvety ... even more so the second day it was opened.

Fonseca Port, 1977

Vintage Port

Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. If Fonseca lacks the sheer weight and power of a Taylor, Dow or Warre, or the opulent sweetness and intensity of a Graham, it excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavors. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. When it is young, it often loses out in blind tastings to the heavier, weightier, more tannic wines, but I always find myself upgrading my opinion of Fonseca after it has had 7-10 years of age.

Glenisla, 1977

37 Year Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky by Signatory (Comes in original tube as illustrated)

Pencil shavings, waxy apples, buttercream frosting, smoked cheese and burnt cinnamon on the nose. A touch of rubber, too. More buttery elements on the palate with brandy butter and apple strudel. Apricot yoghurt gives it a fruity character, whilst tree buds and toasty wood smoke balance out the sweetnes leading to a very long finish with under-ripe pear, green banana and clove.

This is a rare independent bottling of Glenisla single malt Scotch whisky (which is experimental peated whisky from the Glen Keith distillery - they no longer produce it), presented by Signatory. It was distilled back in July 1977 and set aside to mature in a single hogshead cask.
