1991 Vintage Report

Italian: The 1991 vintage was better than first thought but did not rival the three exceptional vintages that preceded it. July was generally very hot and sunny, continuing into August. September continued warm, but rainfall from the middle of September on prevented Nebbiolo and Barbera from ripening fully. As a result the crop was small and the wines will not maintain the traditional longevity associated with the grape.

In Tuscany most producers in Chianti made only small quantities of Riserva, if any at all. In Montalcino and Montepulciano however producers who thinned out the crop during the summer were rewarded with raw materials for wines which have kept well. The best examples of Brunello and Vino Nobile have good depth and structure and although the fruit is not particularly exuberant they are drinking well now.

Bordeaux: Generally an inconsistent vintage with First and Second Growths still drinking well. An abnormally cold frosty April killed many of the buds on the vines particularly those in the southern part of Bordeaux (Pomerol and St Emilion). Although new buds formed and developed, the harvest was always going to be late to allow the grapes to mature fully. Despite the set-back, some acceptable, light wines were produced from northern vineyards of Medoc and Graves.

Port: Declared as a Vintage by some producers the first since 1985. A very small but good Vintage.

Brunello di Montalcino, 1991

Vecchia Cantina

Brunello de Montalcino is one of Italys most famous and most expensive red wines. It is produced in the vineyards surrounding the town of Montalcino located about 70 miles (110 km) southwest of Florence in the Tuscany wine region. Brunello, roughly translated as "nice dark one" is the unofficial name of the clone of Sangiovese used in production.

This Brunello di Montalcino is a blockbuster. Super-rich powerful, tannic, and heady, with a huge spicy bouquet of smokey tobacco meat and dried fruits. This wine is very long-lived and will still drink well in a few years.

Chateau Leoville Barton , 1991

St Julien 2eme Cru Classe

87/100 -(Excellent) Robert Parker

Reviews: "If you are looking for a terrific value from a so-called "off" year, check out Leoville-Barton's 1991! It possesses a deep ruby color, a big, cedary, blackcurrant, and herb-scented nose, and ripe, rich, medium-bodied flavors that offer impressive concentration, moderate tannin, and admirable length. This impressive Leoville-Barton is significantly better than vintages such as 1981 and 1979." Robert Parker, 2009.

Fonseca Vintage Port, 1991

Guimaraens Vintage Port

Dark, maturing, still very densely coloured on inspection though. The nose starts off in a very obvious fashion, full of sweet fig and cedar, showing plenty of spice and with a little time also a fair whack of spirit. But with time it does all channel down into something a little more defined, mainly a cedary wood-spice with chalky, vanilla tinged, edge, but also a painty-chemically nuance too. It suggests a dry structure, perhaps with a woody streak, but although there are elements of this on the palate much more evident - at first at least - is the rather fat and substantial entry, with a slightly plump and soupy feel.

Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port, 1991

Vintage Port

A striking, individualistic nose of spring flowers, blackberries, blueberries, and lead pencil shavings emerges from this saturated purple-coloured 1991. Evolved yet expansive, sweet, and generous, it admirably conceals moderately high tannins under a wealth of fruit and glycerin. The aromatic profile and attack merit a score in the mid-nineties, but the finish is short, thus lowering the overall rating

Warre Vintage Port, 1991

Vintage Port

Heavy rain at the start of the year were able to support the vines through the dry spring and very hot summer. The grapes achieved perfect ripeness with high levels of sugar. This wine is very aromatic with black cherry, plum, dark chocolate and suede notes. A very silky texture with rich chocolate flavours, licorice, cloves, and lots of plum. The tannins are soft and integrated and there is a very long, delicious finish. Definitely a beauty!
