The 1991 vintage was, overall, a slightly drab vintage, but there were some gems. Bordeaux and Burgundy both suffered terribly from April frosts, which struck much of Europe. However, fortified wines enjoyed a very good year. Any of these wines would make a fabulous wine gift for a 35th Anniversary or birthday.
Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:
This Year in History: Fun Fact: The first web page went live on August 6, 1991. It was dedicated to information on the World Wide Web project and was made by Tim Berners-Lee.
Eurovision Winner: Sweden with the song "Fangad Av En Stormvind" by Carola
Top Grossing Movie: Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Italian: The 1991 Italian vintage was better than first thought, but did not rival the three exceptional vintages that preceded it. July was generally very hot and sunny, which continued into August. September remained warm, but rainfall from the middle of September on prevented Nebbiolo and Barbera from ripening fully. As a result the crop was small and the wines will not maintain the traditional longevity associated with the grape. In Tuscany, most producers in Chianti made only small quantities of Riserva, if any at all. In Montalcino and Montepulciano however, producers who thinned out the crop during the summer were rewarded with the raw materials for wines which have kept well. The best examples of Brunello and Vino Nobile have good depth and structure, and although the fruit is not particularly exuberant they are still drinking well now.
Portugal: Declared as a Vintage by some producers, the first since 1985. The 1991 was a very small but good Vintage; the grapes tended to be small with little juice resulting in deep, dense powerful wines for the medium to long term. It was declared by the Symington-owned houses (Dow, Graham, Warre, Smith Woodhouse, Gould Campbell, Quarles Harris) while Taylor and Fonseca declared Single Quinta wines. Both the declared 1991 Vintage Ports and the 1991 Single Quinta wines would make a great 35 year old wine gift for a 35th birthday or anniversary celebration this year!
Spain: The 1991 Rioja and Ribera del Duero vintage was an excellent one. The crop was small, but the wines produced should have weight, structure and quality for years to come.

Clearance Offer - Last Bottle | Was £99 | Now £85
Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche and Molise regions. The variety was named after the Tuscan parish of Montepulciano, but, confusingly, is not used in the famous wines produced there (see Vino Nobile di Montepulciano). Globally appreciated for their soft flavors, strong color and gentle tannins, Montepulciano wines are typically best consumed in their youth and with food. The deep-purple juice of Montepulciano grapes is used in varying proportions to produce wines under roughly 50 of Italy's DOC and DOCG titles. Although sometimes used on its own, …

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1991
Vintage Port
Rich ruby color that is nearly opaque. It presents notes of strawberry, molasses and others mentioned root beer which I did not really get, but thought was worth noting. This Nacional displays excellent concentration and structure, with medium to full-bodied juice. It possesses young blackberry fruit with a unique balsamic component, and shows its fine balance and some powerful tannins that will allow this wine to age for a few decades. A fine Nacional but not a classic, from an unheralded vintage that has a very youthful essence and lingering finish. 93 pts. (HOLD) Roy Hersh

Warre's Vintage Port, 1991
Vintage Port
Half Bottle (37.5cl)
Heavy rains at the start of the year, were able to support the vines through the dry spring and very hot summer. The grapes achieved perfect ripeness with high levels of sugar. This wine is very aromatic with black cherry, plum, dark chocolate and suede notes. A very silky texture with rich chocolate flavours, licorice, cloves, and lots of plum. The tannins are soft and integrated and there is a very long, delicious finish. Definitely a beauty!
