1991 Wine and Port Vintage

Italian: The 1991 Italian vintage was better than first thought, but did not rival the three exceptional vintages that preceded it. July was generally very hot and sunny, which continued into August. September remained warm, but rainfall from the middle of September on prevented Nebbiolo and Barbera from ripening fully. As a result the crop was small and the wines will not maintain the traditional longevity associated with the grape. In Tuscany, most producers in Chianti made only small quantities of Riserva, if any at all. In Montalcino and Montepulciano however, producers who thinned out the crop during the summer were rewarded with the raw materials for wines which have kept well. The best examples of Brunello and Vino Nobile have good depth and structure, and although the fruit is not particularly exuberant they are still drinking well now.

Bordeaux:

1991-wine-gifts

The 1991 was generally an inconsistent vintage for Bordeaux, with First and Second Growths still drinking well. An abnormally cold, frosty April killed many of the buds on the vines - particularly those in the east side of Bordeaux (Pomerol and St Emilion). Although new buds formed and developed, the harvest was always going to be late to allow the grapes to mature fully. Despite the set-back, some acceptable, light wines were produced from northern vineyards of Medoc and Graves.

Portugal: Declared as a Vintage by some producers, the first since 1985. The 1991 was a very small but good Vintage; the grapes tended to be small with little juice resulting in deep, dense powerful wines for the medium to long term. It was declared by the Symington-owned houses (Dow, Graham, Warre, Smith Woodhouse, Gould Campbell, Quarles Harris) while Taylor and Fonseca declared Single Quinta wines. Both the declared 1991 Vintage Ports and the 1991 Single Quinta wines would make a great 32 year old wine gift for a 32nd birthday or anniversary celebration.

Spain: The 1991 Rioja and Ribera del Duero vintage was an excellent one. The crop was small, but the wines produced should have weight, structure and quality for years to come.

Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac, 1991

Ryst Dupeyron Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
50cl bottle

The 1991 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

The Maison Ryst-Dupeyron was founded by Joseph Dupeyron in 1905.

Frei Joao, Bairrada

Caves S. Joao, established in 1920, became a dominant force in Portuguese wine making in the early 20th century with their houses Porta dos Cavaleiros in Dao and Frei Joao in Bairrada. Given the shifting trends in consumer preferences, Bairrada and Dao fell to obscurity in the 1990s when critical influence drove the demand for bigger, extracted, warmer climate wines. As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character,

Morgan Brothers Port was a company founded by a London merchant that moved to Oporto in 1715. It remained in the Morgan family until 1952 when it was purchased by Croft. In 2001 Croft Was sold to Taylor Fladgate and the name was retired.

A rare bottle of 1991 Morgan Vintage Port. The 1991 has an impressive colour and a pleasing nose of pepper, spice, earth, black truffles, and black fruits, suggest a developed, forward character. Full bodied and in harmony. Very good 89/100 VWP (TC).

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1991

Vintage Port

Rich ruby color that is nearly opaque. It presents notes of strawberry, molasses and others mentioned root beer which I did not really get, but thought was worth noting. This Nacional displays excellent concentration and structure, with medium to full-bodied juice. It possesses young blackberry fruit with a unique balsamic component, and shows its fine balance and some powerful tannins that will allow this wine to age for a few decades. A fine Nacional but not a classic, from an unheralded vintage that has a very youthful essence and lingering finish. 93 pts. (HOLD) Roy Hersh

Quinta do Vesuvio, 1991

Vintage Port

1991 Quinta do Vesuvio. Now Part of Symington family Estates, Quinta do Vesuvio is one of the great Quintas of the Douro. The 1991 Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage shows all the hallmarks of a classic Vintage Port. Intense red colour. Packed with aromas of berry fruits such as blackcurrant and graceful floral hints. On the palate very complex fruit flavours, excellent ripe tannins and a sweet and powerful finish.

Wine Makers Notes:
The heavy rains that fell in the early part of 1991 were to stand the vineyards in good stead for the dry spring and very hot summer which ensued. Following the intense August heat, refreshing showers in early September ensured the grapes achieved a very good state of maturity with high sugar levels.

Rioja, 1991

Remelluri Reserva, Rioja

In this wine from old vines on the Remelluri estate owned by Telmo Rodriguez & his sister Amaia, Tempranillo grape is blended with a little Graciano and Garnacha (Grenache); The wine from this vintage is still displaying lots of fruit. In addition the cooler climate has helped combine the earthy red fruit with spice and savouriness - and with amazing elegance. It's a complex Rioja Reserva and a refreshing acidity cuts through the richness making it very drinkable indeed

Graham's Port, 1991

Vintage Port

*** 94 Points Robert Parker ***

"Graham's 1991 Vintage Port gets my nod as the port of the vintage. While keeping in mind that Graham's aims for a sweeter-styled port, there is no doubting the opaque purple/black colour, or the explosive nose of black fruits, licorice, spring flowers, and tar. Thick and full-bodied, with a satiny texture and a blockbuster, alcoholic finish, this is a top-notch vintage port." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 1995. Drink now to 2030+
