The 1992 vintage was, in many respects, a case of the good, the bad and the ugly. much of Europe was plagued with rain and rot, claiming both Bordeaux and the Rhône Valley as casualties. Italy also struggled, with many Piedmont producers choosing to declassify their Barolo and Barbaresco. The real winners of the vintage lay in the cooler climate wines of Germany and Austria, the fortified wines of Port. Any of these wines would make a fabulous wine gift for a 34th Anniversary or birthday.
Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:
This Year in History: Fun Fact: 1992 was a year where the average house price was £68,634 and a gallon of petrol cost £2.13.
Eurovision Winner: Ireland with the song "Why Me" by Linda Martin
Top Grossing Movie: Aladdin
Bordeaux: For Bordeaux, rain during the harvest produced wines of variable quality. The crop was enormous but most of the top vineyards adopted strict selection policies, discarding a large percentage. This led to wines that are characterised by being soft, fruity, and low in acidity level with light to moderate tannin levels and moderate to good concentration. The wines are now mature and should be drunk soon.
Italian: A poor year for Italian wines, the weather did not favour the vintage. The best producers will be the only ones to have produced good wines from this year.
Portugal: The 1992 vintage was declared by some port houses who produced some rich and concentrated wines. The port was still young in 2008 and benefitted from further cellaring, making them a brilliant wine gift for a birthday or anniversary.

Quinta do Poco do Lobo, 1992
Quinta Poço do Lobo - Cabernet Sauvignon, Bairrada
Caves S. Joao, established in 1920, became a dominant force in Portuguese wine making in the early 20th century with their houses Porta dos Cavaleiros in Dao and Frei Joao in Bairrada. Given the shifting trends in consumer preferences, Bairrada and Dao fell to obscurity in the 1990s when critical influence drove the demand for bigger, extracted, warmer climate wines. As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character, …

Quinta do Vesuvio, 1992
Vintage Port
Quinta do Vesuvio, 1992
Vintage Port
The 1992 vintage in the Douro followed the acclaimed 1991 declaration, and while not universally declared, several leading houses produced impressive Vintage Ports of depth and character. Quinta do Vesuvio — one of the Douro’s most historic and visually striking estates — crafted a wine that reflects the power and individuality for which the quinta is renowned.
Located in the remote Douro Superior, Vesuvio is celebrated for its steep terraced vineyards and traditionally lagares-fermented Ports. By the early 1990s, under the stewardship of the Symington family, the estate was firmly established as a producer of intensely structured, age-worthy Vintage Ports. …

Taittinger, 1992
Vintage Champagne Matta Label in presentation box
As the years went by, Matta’s work, influenced for a long time by the violence and oppression that sadly marked this era, became subdued and more poetic.
These are some of the characteristics found on the design he created in his homage to Champagne. Matta leads the design with poppies, a well-known symbol of war remembrance and painted them on an ochre background. These flowers represent a need for nostalgia, yet a spirit of continuation all the same. Calligraphic marks, reminiscent of the famous ‘automatic writing’ of the surrealists, run across the design.
The bottle contains a Brut Millésimé 1992, made from a combination of Chardonnay (50 %) and Pinot Noir (50 %). …

Taylor Fladgate, 1992
Vintage Port
100 Points - Robert Parker
*** 100 Points - Robert Parker ***
***19/20 Jancis Robinson***
"Taylor's 1992 Vintage Port is unquestionably the greatest young port I have ever tasted. It represents the essence of what vintage port can achieve. The color is an opaque black/purple, and the nose offers up fabulously intense aromas of minerals, cassis, blackberries, licorice, and spices, as well as extraordinary purity and penetration. Yet this is still an unformed and infantile wine. If Chateau Latour made a late-harvest Cabernet Sauvignon, I suspect it might smell like this. In the mouth, the wine is out of this world, displaying layer upon layer of concentrated black fruits backed by well-integrated tannin and structure. …

D'Oliveiras Madeira, 1992
Malvasia
A rich, velvety smooth Malvazia with sweet caramel, chocolate orange and malted chocolate notes. Well judged balancing acidity teases out the finish and keeps the sweetness in check.
* Review by Sarah Ahmed- www.thewinedetective.co.uk *
Try this luscious sweet and full-bodied Madeira with stewed meat dishes with sweet and spicy elements. It pars marvellously with intense and rich dark chocolate as well as nutty and caramel desserts. Why not serve at the very end of the meal with a blue cheese such as stilton or Roquefort. Finally, a Malvasia is also delicious with cigars.

Tasting Notes:
Deep ruby in colour with only slight development at the rim, the nose is expressive and inviting, showing aromas of ripe blackberry, blackcurrant and dark cherry layered with notes of violets, cedar and gentle spice. On the palate it is rich yet poised, with supple tannins and a smooth, rounded texture. …
