1993 Wine and Port Vintage

Italian: Italian wines from the 1993 vintage fared better than their predecessors in 1992 - the weather was still unfavourable, however there were more acceptable wines produced. Barolos from this vintage offered a good experience, and although fully mature are still drinking well.

Bordeaux:

1993-wine-gifts

If you were born in 1993 or have a significant anniversary in that year, then we would recommend a Bordeaux wine or a Pedro Ximenez fortified wine.
1993 Bordeaux: The 1993 in Bordeaux is considered to be a moderate vintage, following on from the poor vintages of 1991 and 1992. Despite some dilution from late rains in September, the better examples of wine from this year exhibit a deep colour, rich intensity and good structure. The top wines from 1993 find more favour with critics than 1991 and 1992 and should still offer a good drinking experience now, making them a good 30 year old wine gift for a 30th birthday or anniversary celebration.

Champagne: 1993 was a particularly early vintage, helped by scorching spring heats. Harvest thus started early in September, and proved to be prompt and plethoric. Then summertime was dry and sunny.

Portugal: The 1993 was one of the worst years ever for weather in the Douro, with rain falling throughout the harvest. No declarations were made and little or no vintage Port was made. We would recommend a 30 year old tawny style Port for a 30th Anniversary gift. Whilst these do not have 1993 on the label - they have been aging for 30 years and are amazing fortified wines.

This Year in History: Fun Fact: Czechoslovakia officially splits into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Eurovision Winner: Ireland with the song "In Your Eyes" by Niamh Kavanagh
Born in this Year: Jodie Comer is an English actress. She is known for her broad range and expressive approach to the craft of acting and for her work in British television. Born and raised in Liverpool, Comer began her career in an episode of The Royal Today in 2008. She gained recognition for appearing in the series My Mad Fat Diary (2013–2015) and Doctor Foster (2015–2017), and earned acclaim for starring in the drama miniseries Thirteen (2016).

From 2018 to 2022, Comer starred as sociopathic assassin Villanelle in the BBC America spy thriller series Killing Eve, winning a British Academy Television Award and a Primetime Emmy Award. For starring as a healthcare assistant in the television film Help (2021), she won another British Academy Television Award. Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac, 1993

Ryst Dupeyron Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
50cl bottle

The 1993 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

The Maison Ryst-Dupeyron was founded by Joseph Dupeyron in 1905.

Quinta Poço do Lobo - Cabernet
Special Offer | Was £69 | Now £49

Caves S. Joao, established in 1920, became a dominant force in Portuguese wine making in the early 20th century with their houses Porta dos Cavaleiros in Dao and Frei Joao in Bairrada. Given the shifting trends in consumer preferences, Bairrada and Dao fell to obscurity in the 1990s when critical influence drove the demand for bigger, extracted, warmer climate wines. As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character,

Cantine Prandi, Piedmont
Excellent provenance
Special Offer | Was £99 | Now £79

The 1993 Barolo Cantine Prandi have come from the producer's cellars where they have laid undisturbed since bottling.

Cantine Prandi was established in the 1920s when grandfather Farinetti Majorino envisioned selling part of the wine produced for family use to the commercial market. In the 1960's his nephew Giovanni came to lend a hand and was instrumental in shaping the winery and its future development. Up to 2009, Giovanni's son Alessandro looked after the beautiful vineyards situated in the long hills surrounding Piemonte. In recent years, due to Alessandro's passing, the winery ceased production.

Marquis de Caussade, 1993

Vintage Armagnac
Damaged label

Amber core with a bronze rim; shows mellow walnut, warm spices, cocoa and prunes on the nose. Mellow attack on the palate finishing on a delicious freshness and texture.

Armagnac is a grape brandy produced in the Gascony region of south-west France, as it has been since at least the 15th century. A fuller-bodied (some would say rustic) style of brandy when compared to Cognac, it is only distilled once and is often aged for many years (decades in some cases) and makes an excellent digestif.

Tokaji, 1993

Tokaji Aszu 4 Puttynos 1993
bin soiled and damaged Berry brothers labels

Hungary’s most famous dessert wine is Tokaji the legendary sweet elixir. It can only be spoken in the superlative about this wine, as it is a medicine, a real nectar. The name Tokaji (which is of Protected Designation of Origin) is used for labeling wines from this wine district. The location of the region has a unique climate, beneficial to this particular viniculture, due to the protection of the nearby mountains, long warm autumns and mists that come in from the River Bodrog, creating perfect conditions for noble rot. Creating the botrytised ('aszú') grapes for which the region is famous. A wonderful sweet wine from this renowned producer.

Tokaji, 1993

Tokaji Royal Aszu Essencia
(Half litre, 50cl), Hungary

Situated along the southern slopes of the Zemplén Mountains, Tokaj is characterized by late springs and short growing seasons. The average temperatures are generally cool, with long, sunny summers and dry autumns. Tokaj’s soil is largely clay or loess with a volcanic substratum; vines are approximately 20 years old. The meeting of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers in Tokaj creates a mist similar to that of the fog in Sauternes. The mist encourages “botrytis cinerea,” or “noble rot,” which dries and shrivels the Furmint, Hárslevelü and Muscat grape varieties that comprise Tokaji wines, and concentrates the sugars.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1993

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 90 Points - Robert Parker ***
Reviews: " The 1993 is a beautifully made wine which could be considered a sleeper of the vintage. The wine boasts a dark purple color, followed by a sweet, pain grillee, roasted nut, and cassis-scented bouquet that is just beginning to open. In the mouth, the wine may not possess the body and volume of a vintage such as 1990 or 1989, but there is more richness of fruit, a sweet, ripe, pureness to the wine, as well as medium body and outstanding balance. This moderately tannic, well-focused, surprisingly rich 1993 is capable of 15-20 years of evolution. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015.
