1995 Wine and Port Vintage

Italian: The 1995 wine vintage in Italy is generally rated as good. Although it was overshadowed by the exceptional vintages that followed. The vintage produced consistent wines - the best examples from Tuscany and Piedmont are now at the peak of their maturity.

Bordeaux: The 1995 wine vintage produced consistent Bordeaux wines that reached full maturity by 2012. Superb weather in July and August augured well for the crop, however rain in September slightly impaired the quality. Unlike 1994, the rain only lasted for just over a week and those producers that delayed harvesting were rewarded with a harvest of mature grapes. The wines produced from these vineyards are dense tannic affairs that should mature well.

Portugal: The 1995 port wine vintage is rated as very good. If it hadn't directly followed the quite exceptional 1994 Vintage, 1995 could well have been a fully declared Vintage. It did however produce exceptionally good Single Quintas with concentrated, fruity and well-structured ports. The 1995 port vintage also offers plenty of good examples of barrel aged (tawny) port from established producers such as Kopke, Messias, Barros and Krohn that would offer exceptional drinking today, making these excellent 28 year old wine gifts for a 28th birthday or 28th anniversary celebration.

Spain: The 1995 vintage for Spain was an 'Excelente' vintage with what was then (although superseded in 1996, then '97 and '98) the biggest harvest of all time. This was the second 5-star year vintage in a row.

This Year in History: Fun Fact: After setting sail in September of ’94, British woman Lisa Clayton completes solo sail non-stop around the world.
Eurovision Winner: Norway with the song "Nocturne" by Secret Garden
Top Grossing Movie: Die Hard: With a Vengeance

Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac, 1995

Ryst Dupeyron Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
50cl bottle
Includes original orange cardboard gift box

The 1995 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

The Maison Ryst-Dupeyron was founded by Joseph Dupeyron in 1905.

Burmester, 1995

Vintage Port, Douro

The 1995 Burmester Vintage Port is an elegant wine with lovely, aromatic fruit on the nose. Hints of black-fruit, cherry, figs and roasted coffee. The Port has a dark core lightening at the edges. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a sleek, racy, long, sweet fruit finish. Outstanding 92/100. VWP tasting 01/20

In 1730, Henry Burmester and John Nash founded Burmester & Nash in London, a cereal trading company. They moved to Vila Nova de Gaia and in 1750 began shipping port wine to the British Isles and the rest of Europe. The family name originates from the German word 'Burgmeester', meaning 'mayor' - as the family came from the small north Germany city of Moelln.

J W Hart, 1995

Colheita Port, Douro

This 1995 J W Hart Tawny Colheita is elegant and complex. An amalgamation of rich flavours is marked by the presence of dried fruits, with a burst of freshness in red cherries enhanced by an exuberant note of spice. Perfect for pairing with an exquisite salted caramel tart.

Colheita Port Storage and Serving Advice:
Colheita Port should be stored in a cool and dry place, sheltered from light and temperature fluctuations, and the bottle should remain in an upright position. If stored correctly, Colheita Ports will keep for decades in the bottle. Over time, it is natural that a little sediment will form at the bottom of a bottle of colheita Port wine.

Bairrada, 1995

Quinta Poço do Lobo - Cabernet
***91 Points - Robert Parker***
Special Offer | Was £69 | Now 49.95
Excellent Provenance

The 1995 Quinta Poço do Lobo from caves St Joao are an exceptional experience at a nice price. Plus, the provenance is perfect—re-released direct from the winery.

The 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva Quinta do Poço do Lobo is unoaked and comes in at 13.5% alcohol. This Reserva has more power than the regular reds and much riper fruit. It is bigger and fresher in every respect. Intense and powerful, this is nuanced by cassis and red fruits. It ends with a big finish. There are some typical nuances of aging Cab too. So, while it is fresh for its age, it hardly tastes like a young red. Many will consider that a good thing.

Carruades de Chateau Lafite, 1995

Pauillac

Carruades de Chateau Lafite is the 2nd label of Chateau Lafite Rothschild.
After fermentation and maceration, the wines are tasted, selected and put together according to their different qualities. This step is very important because this is where we make the difference between the great "Lafite" and the second wine "Carruades de Lafite". The wines are drained off into oak barrels. We use 100% new barrels for the ageing of Lafite. The year after, these same barrels will be used for the Carruades.

Chateau Musar, 1995

Bekaar Valley, Gaston Hochar
Magnum 1.5L
Stained and bin soiled label.

The 1996 Musar is a blend of Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Carignan from this well-known and highly regarded Lebanese winery.

Chateau Musar is often referred to as the Lafite of the Lebanon. Wine maker Gaston Hochar defied the odds producing a string of great wines during the Lebanon War. Musar has assumed legendary status. Complex, long-lived and endlessly varied, in some vintages it seems more like a Burgundy, in others a Bordeaux, in still others a Hermitage. But it is always brilliantly, uniquely, Lebanese. Ages magnificently but good vintages are usually best at 10-20 years old.

Chateau Pichon-Longueville, Baron, 1995

Pauillac 2eme Cru Classe

1995 Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron
Over the space of a few years, the grand vin of Pichon Longueville Baron has established itself as one of the best crus of Pauillac. Full and concentrated, it has unique, fine-grained tannins which make it absolutely delicious. Indeed, like the best wines of the appellation, it is extremely effective at marrying contrasts: power and finesse.

93 points James Suckling
This is surprisingly delicate and fine now with currant and spice character and hints of nuts. It is full bodied with refined texture and a beautiful finish. Inner quote mark (6/2016)

91 points Vinous
The 1995 Pichon-Baron is a wine that tasted extremely well several years ago, but I wonder how well it is continuing to evolve.

New

The 1995 Rayne Vigneau has a lifted bouquet with honeycomb, dried pineapple and dried quince that gains intensity with aeration. The palate is ripe and spicy on the entry with mandarin and Seville orange marmalade. There is very good weight and cohesion here, long and gently spiced on the finish.

Rayne Vigneau has all the excellent qualities of a legendary fine wine. Classified 1st growth in the famous 1855 classification, the domain is also renowned for its precious soil that abounds in precious stones. This Sauternes has a particularly intense style, fresh with a long finish on the palate.

Churchill's Port, 1995

Quinta do Agua Alta

Despite its thoroughly traditional-sounding name Churchill is the newest of the British-owned Port companies, founded in 1981 by J. Graham.

Quinta Agua Alta is named after the spring at the top of the vineyard and it produces wonderfully pure and fresh water that bubbles up through the granite rock below the thin top soil. Olives and figs grow in abundance around the vineyard which produces a quite stunninly powerful port.

Deep purple in colour with a mass of soft and concentrated fruit. There's plenty of tannin to give structure and a pleasing earthiness on the finish. This is the perfect way to round off a good dinner.

Delamain Cognac, 1995

Grand Champagne Cognac

A 1995 vintage cognac from Delamain, using first growth grapes from Mainxe. It was matured in their hallowed Vintage Cellar in Jarnac for before selection and bottling.

The family-run house of Delamain is one of the oldest Cognac producers, founded in 1762. The company is rare in that it produces no VS or VSOP Cognac, and also chooses to reduce bottle strengths down to 40% abv with 'faibles' (old, low-strength Cognacs) rather than with water.

Quinta de la Rosa, 1995

Vintage Port

Quinta de La Rosa is a small estate in the heart of the Port wine-growing region in Alto Douro, near Pinhao, owned and operated by the Bergqvist family.

The Quinta and its vineyards were given to the Bergqvist family as a Christening present by the Feuerheerds, who established the property in 1906.

It remains one of the few Single Quinta where the vineyards start at the bank of the Douro and rise 450 meters to the towering top of the mountain. From the river's edge to the top, one passes through 11 different microclimates. This gives La Rosa great flexibility to add variety and complexity to its Ports.

Barolo, 1995

Giacomo Borgogno, Piedmont

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Taylor's Port, 1995

Late Bottled Vintage Port
1 Litre Bottle
Rewaxed

Late Bottled Vintage port is from a single year. The wine ages 4-6 years in old oak casks (opposed to Vintage that ages 2-3). LBV fills the gap between the rubies and the vintage ports since a Ruby Port should be drunk quite young and a great Vintage Port may need 15 to 20 years to really open up and show its splendour. This led to the idea in the 1960s to age the wine 4 to 6 years in large casks before bottling it.

LBV's display the style of a Vintage Port with its deep colour and concentration of fruit but with a more mature character caused by the longer ageing in wood.
