1997 Wine and Port Vintage

Italian: 1997 was undoubtedly a great vintage for Italian wines. Like the 1982 and 1990 Bordeaux vintages, it will have its critics because of its extreme style, but if wine is a beverage of pleasure, this vintage offers extraordinary wines.

Bordeaux: The 1997 wines of Bordeaux are characterised by being attractive, soft and user-friendly with broad appeal. They have been quick to mature and, except for the most concentrated wines, should be drunk within the next few years.

Portugal:

1997-wine-gifts
1997 was one of the great port vintages of the decade and marked a general declaration of vintage. The vintage is characterised by full-bodied wines that will be at their best now, but will remain at their peak for at least another 20 or 30 years if stored with care. A 1997 Vintage Port would make a great 26 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary celebration this year.

This Year in History: Fun Fact: The Simpsons became the longest-running animated television series.

Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac, 1997

Ryst Dupeyron Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
50cl bottle
Includes original cardboard gift box

The 1997 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

The Maison Ryst-Dupeyron was founded by Joseph Dupeyron in 1905.

D'Oliveiras Madeira, 1997

Tinta Negra (dry style)

The founders of D’Oliveiras were visionaries that saw the true value of Madeira Wine: its ability to improve over time. D’Oliveiras is the only Madeira Wine company that owns Madeira Wine bottles and barrels from as far as the 1850’s that can still be commercially purchased. Bottled and painted by hand, this 1997 has been aged for 22 years in old French oak barrels in the 17th century wine lodge in the heart of old Funchal.

This unusual 1997 Tinta Negra Madeira was vinified in a dry style, revealing a fine and precise aroma, tempered by the strong presence of dried fruits and lightened and spiced by generous volatile acidity.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1997

St Estephe, 2nd Growth Classification, Bordeaux

Deep garnet color. Perfumed, vibrant aromas of black cherry, cassis, leather and oak spice. Big, sweet and rich, with lush black cherry and black raspberry fruit already offering enticing inner-mouth flavor. Less oaky on the palate than on the nose. Just a hint of herbaceousness. Finishes subtle and quite long, with impressively even, ripe tannins but not quite the snap of the '96. A terrific effort for the vintage. Stephen Tanzer Vinous

Chateau d'Angludet, 1997

Margaux Cru Bourgeois Supérieur, Bordeaux

The 1997 Angludet performed freakishly well in my tastings. It reveals a deep purple color, and gobs of chewy, fat, blackberry and mocha-tinged cherry fruit. An opulent 1997, it possesses superb fruit purity, medium to full body, low acidity, and a seductive, fleshy personality. This wine is a sleeper of the vintage.
*Robert M. Parker, Jr. The Wine Advocate*

Château d'Angludet or Château Angludet, is located in the appellation Margaux, in the commune of Cantenac on the left bank of the Gironde. The estate was classified a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in 1932, and most recently a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur in 2003.

Chateau Gloria, 1997

St Julien, Bordeaux

The 1997 Chateau Gloria is generous and well-structured, these intense, complex wines are typical of the Saint Julien appellation. The result of traditional vinification, they have a strong, rich colour. On the palate, they are expressive, rounded and supple. They should be kept for a few years to express their full potential.

This property consists of several plots located in the best terroirs of the appellation that Henri Martin, one of the great figures of the Médoc, had put under the same banner. Today it is headed by her daughter. In 1942 Henri Martin purchased four hectares of vines in St Julien, which became Gloria.

Chateau Larmande, 1997

The 1997 Chateau Larmande is evolved but still wonderfully vibrant and expressive St. Émillion. that feels like it is slowly approaching its plateau of maturity. The fruit has developed some tertiary characteristics, but there is still quite a bit of vibrant fruit left and the tannins come across as quite assertive and grippy, even after all these years. Very good value.

Chateau Leoville Las Cases, 1997

St Julien, 2nd Growth Classification, Bordeaux
Magnum Bottle

Léoville Las Cases is the most legendary wine of Saint-Julien: on a quality par with the Médoc's first growths, without the hefty price premium to match. It is a prime example of a Bordeaux 'super-second' - a second growth operating at a first growth level. Léoville Las Cases is also one of the largest, oldest and most picturesque of the Médoc's classified Bordeaux growths. Grapes are fermented at lower than average temperatures, which is partially responsible for the wines displaying some of the most exotic aromas and aromatic richness in the Médoc.

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1997

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe, Bordeaux

*** 88 Points - Neil Martin Wine Journal ***

Reviews:
"This has a superb nose, very lifted and well-defined, cedar, blackcurrant, smoke and a touch of burnt toast. Just soars from the glass. The palate is full-bodied, ripe tannins, beautiful balance and poise with a sense of controlled opulence towards the finish. It comes across very natural, black cherries, blueberry, a touch of orange zest. This is certainly an over-performing wine for the vintage and shows better than previous bottles, although it did fade a little when returning after 15 minutes in the glass. Drink now-2015. Tasted September 2009.

Chateau Talbot, 1997

St Julien, 4me Cru Classe, Bordeaux
Magnum Bottle

The 1997 Chateau Talbot has a saturated purple color, and a sweet, earthy, leather, and cassis-scented nose. In the mouth, the wine is fat and opulent, with low acidity. The finish is all glycerin, alcohol, and juicy fruit. It may be almost too low in acidity, but it is drinking well and can be expected to do so for another decade.

Owned by the Cordier family since 1917, the wines of Château Talbot have always enjoyed particular acclaim in the UK. An impressive 107 hectares are under vine here, with around 86% being devoted to Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are strong, sturdy and built to last, with a certain ‘gout de terroir’.

Justino's Madeira, 1997

Justino's - Sercial

Justino’s Madeira Wines, S.A., is one of the oldest Madeira wine producers, going way back to 1870! Yet, despite being one of the oldest, Justino’s is certainly one of the most dynamic producers and exporters of Madeira Wine, internationally known for the quality of its wines.

This 1997 Sercial Madeira by Justino reveals orange peel, dry fruits and spices notes on the nose. On the palate, aromas of dried fruits, exotic wood, coconut, dry herb and orange peel. Vibrant acidity but still showing a great fruity style. Dry and long finish.

Serving suggestions and food pairing: The soft, delicate and elegant fruit qualities of this dry Madeira make it suitable for serving slight chilled as an aperitif,

Justino's Madeira, 1997

Justino's - Malvasia

"There won’t be a lot of this wine on the palate so it is a rare privilege to have tasted it. Amber in colour the wine is woody to the nose as it should be, it is on the palate that this wine reveals itself, extraordinary levels of layered flavour, nuts and candied orange, sweet but with an utterly bracing acidity that keeps the wine from being at all cloying. A rare wine and a world class wine, a true delight and a wine to share amongst the best of friends." Tasting Notes

Justino's Madeira, 1997

Justino's - Tinta Negra

This wine is a blend of several grape varieties grown in the island, predominately Tinta Negra, harvested in 1997.

"A dark amber colour with a lucid and consistent yellow edge. More than a Marsala, the impact of the aroma is like a great Vincotto from the Marche region, although it is much finer. The bouquet has less caramel and is less volatile with more notes of prune, dried fruit and coffee. The mouthfeel is sweet and caramel-like with notes of black tea and coffee, while the finish is invigorated by a distinct acidity." Silver Award -San Francisco International Wine Competition
