1999 Vintage Report

Bordeaux: 1999 wine : A very good vintage that produced low acidity, ripe wines which have matured quickly and are drinkable now. However, they should last a good 15-20 years. The weather during the growing and harvest season was excessively wet and hot and in earlier times could have been disastrous. However, those Chateau that adopted modern selection and processing techniques produced wines of good quality. Those that did not fared less well. This is reflected in the wide variation in quality across the region. Prices are fair and reflect good value.

Port: 1999 port: Not a general declaration of vintage. Some vineyards produced small quantities of outstanding single quinta wines.

1999, Chateau Grand Puy Ducasse, 1999

Pauillac 5th Growth Classification - Includes FREE Gift Box with Accessories (SPECIAL OFFER Was £54.95 , Now £44.95)

"First tasted March 2000 when it displayed an opulent, spicy palate. Very dense with saturated tannins. Masculine. This admirable continues the upward trajectory of this estate. Another good bottle in November 2003: a sweet raspberry nose - quite floral. The palate has copious sweet red fruits, good acidity and harmony. Well-knit with moderate tannins. Yet to show its full potential. Fine." Neil Martin, Wine Journal

1999 Amarone della Valpolicella, 1999

Caterina Zardini DOC

Amarone della Valpolicella is the most prestigious wine from the Verona area and one of the most important Italian reds. Carefully selected grapes are dried on cane mats for 3 - 4 months before a lengthy maceration and 5 - 8 years in oak casks. It is this process that makes Amarone wines extremely long-lived. cinnamon, candied apples, cloves, vanilla, liqourice, cherries - a port like smell - very ripe berry fruit - incredible! The taste is medium full body, a touch of sweetness, good acidity. The port like character is present in the taste. The tannins are played down - not too dry. Full broad attack leading to a voluptuous mid palate with the acid and toasted oak predominating at the very long finish.

Marchesi di Barolo Vigne di Proprieta

The 1999 Barolo shows the quality of the vintage – this is very good juice indeed for purchased grapes. Chateau Gruaud Larose , 1999

Saint Julien Grand Cru Classe

Reviews: "A successful offering, the opaque purple-colored 1999 Gruaud-Larose reveals the estate's tell-tale aromatics of saddle leather, aged beef, blackberries, cassis, licorice, and tobacco. Nicely integrated oak buttresses a medium to full-bodied, extracted wine. This effort saturates the palate with glycerin and fruit concentration. Pure, long, and impressive, it will drink well between 2005-2020." Parker, Wine Advocate, 2000

Chateau Margaux, 1999

Margaux Premiere Grand Cru Classe

94 Points - Robert Parker
95+ Points - Wine Journal

"The sexy, dark plum/purple-colored 1999 Margaux is already revealing complex aromatics. This surprisingly charming and round offering is reminiscent of a vintage such as 1985. Although neither a blockbuster nor a heavyweight, it grows in the mouth revealing tremendous length as well as purity. Administrator Paul Pontallier prefers it to the more austere 1998, as do I. This is an archetypical Chateau Margaux of richness, finesse, balance, and symmetry. It can be drunk young, but promises to age nicely for two decades. Extrapolating backwards, it would probably have something in common with the underrated 1962 Medocs.

Malcolm Gluck, The Guardian, 13th December 2003
17.5 Points out of 20
"this is magnificent stuff with a highly bred sense of its class, showing complex hedgerow berries and gripping tannins that mitigate, beautifully, the sweetness in a way that makes the liquid dangerously seductive".

Anthony Rose, The Independent, 20th December 2003
"Seductively perfumed with blackberry and spice,

Chateau Mouton Rothschild , 1999

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 93 Points - Robert Parker ***

Reviews:
"The beautiful 1999 Mouton Rothschild may be a modern day clone of their 1962 or 1985. Its saturated ruby/purple color is followed by sumptuous aromas of cedar wood, creme de cassis, wood smoke, coffee, and dried herbs. The wine is forward, lush, and full-bodied. It is already complex as well as succulent, fleshy, and long. Tannin in the finish suggests more nuances will emerge in 4-5 years. It is a complex, classic Mouton. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2030" Parker, Wine Advocate 2005

Taylor's Vintage Port, 1999

Quinta de Terra Feita Vintage Port

Quinta de Terra Feita's vines have been supplying Taylor Fladgate with the highest quality grapes for over a hundred years.

This famous old estate is one of the most substantial properties in, what is considered by many, to be the finest wine producing area of the Upper Douro. The Quinta is situated on the western slopes of the Pinhao River Valley. With over 61 hectares under vine it produces 1,300 hectoliters of port wine.

The wines of Terra Feita are all produced in traditional granite lagares on the property. This ancient method still produces the best quality wine; the gentle action of the foot carefully extracts the maximum colour, fruit and tannins from the wine.
