1999 Vintage Report

Italian: The Barolos and Barbarescos are very good and are reminiscent of the 95s in style and structure. 1999 was the third top vintage in a row in Tuscany. Despite the wet weather in most of Italy, the region remained hot and dry for most of the growing season, although there was intermittent rain during the harvest. Those who picked before the September rains have produced deeply coloured wines that are brimming with rich, ripe fruits.
 
Bordeaux: 1999 wine : A very good vintage that produced low acidity, ripe wines which have matured quickly and are drinkable now. However, they should last a good 15-20 years. The weather during the growing and harvest season was excessively wet and hot and in earlier times could have been disastrous. However, those Chateau that adopted modern selection and processing techniques produced wines of good quality. Those that did not fared less well. This is reflected in the wide variation in quality across the region. Prices are fair and reflect good value.
 
Vintage Port: 1999 port: Not a general declaration of vintage. Some vineyards produced small quantities of outstanding single quinta wines.

Kopke Port, 1999

Kopke Port is the oldest port house. Established in 1638 by Christiano Kopke and his son, Nicolau Kopke who came to Portugal as representatives of the Hanseatic League, the House of Kopke is the eldest Porto wine export firm. Through many generations, the Company was run by several representatives of the Kopke family, obtaining an excellent reputation for its wines.

Review:
Bright red-brown colour. Presents a complex bouquet of fruity aromas, standing-out the red fruits. In the taste it is elegant, well structured and with an excellent aromatic intensity. The freshness is in perfect harmony with the delicious fruity flavours, which are extended through the persistent and seductive finish.

Barolo, 1999

Malgrà

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Barros Port, 1999

The Barros from the excellent 1999 vintage is full-bodied, soft and velvety with distinctive flavors of dried fruit, which persist forever.It should be stored in a cool, dry, protected from light and temperature variations. The bottle should be stored upright. Established at the beginning of the century, Barros, Almeida & C0 - Vinhos S.A., is undoubtedly, one of the most prestigious companies producing and trading in port. Nowadays, the Barros Group is composed of several companies acquired or established along the years, and its position on the port market is an important one (about 5% of total sales) producing in its Quintas up the Douro about 600 pipes of port.

Tasting notes

The wine has a fine, rather vivid red colour with a ruby tint and a very open, complex nose on which fresh fruit (cherry, blackcurrant, redcurrant) and floral aromas (violet, lilac) mingle with denser notes of vanilla, tobacco leaf and cedarwood. The body builds rapidly from a substantial attack on round, harmonious tannins which unfold over elegant, well-integrated oak, developing a pleasant suggestion of liquorice, menthol and spice on the palate. The long, elegant finish displays highly refined tannins and lingering red fruit flavours.

This is a very nice CdP taht is fully mature. It is drinking beautifully still with very nice fruit coming across the palate. It has typical notes of garrigue, rosemary, cranberry, a little mint and Provençal herbs. This wine is in a good place and ready to drink now, it will not benefit from further cellaring.

Double decanted back into the bottle. Lovely deep colour still. Nose of black cherry, dried herbs. The palate is medium bodied and well balanced. There's an earthy note, some gentle richness, nice mix of fruits wrapped in well integrated oak ad a good length.

A solid, enjoyable Chianti. It shows a really nice nose of sweet dried cherries and wild berries flecked with powdered herbs, dried spices and a little touch of dried earth. A very Italian bouquet. The palate is in great shape, drinking beautifully with nice flavours of prunes and plums and dried cherries laced with slightly chewy tannins and bright, tomato-ish Sangiovese acidity. The finish has a nice dusting of Italian herbs and a dried prune character that spoke of the hot 1997 vintage

The Nebbiolo has a lovely earthy bouquet. The nose has cherries, dark cherries, tar and slight dried rose notes. Complex and layered. Nice acidity. Medium tannins still present. Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine.

Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavored wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

Niepoort 1999 Secundum Vintage Port is a style of Vintage Port developed by Dirk Niepoort to provide an approachable Vintage Port that offers immediate satisfaction yet is well-balanced enough to age for decades.

The 1999 Vintage gave rise to some very well structured Ports with almost ideal ripeness. It has not been a "fully declared" year but small parcels of top quality Vintage Port have been bottled by most shippers.

Secundum 99 is one of these combining power and the finesse. The fruit is seductive and the flavours inticing with a firm, but fine, structure. Could be enjoyed in 10 –12 years time but will also keep well beyond 2020.

Tasting notes:
Deep red, opaque and inky with intense, fresh red fruit aromas. In the mouth it has rich plummy flavours with hints of strawberry supported by firm tannins giving a firm backbone and which will allow it to age superbly over several years. It is a superb match for desserts and mince pies.

Production method
Fermentation in stainless steel vats and in presses under controlled temperature, arrested through the addition of grape alcohol. Matured for 2 years in large used oak vats, bottled in 2nd year after harvest and aged in bottle since. Both dates appear on label.
