2000 Wine and Port Vintage

Vintage Port: 2000 Port: The 2000 Vintage was the first to be declared in the 21st century and will be remembered for the immense concentration of its wines and for the small quantities produced. The wines are already showing tremendous promise, with intense berry fruit aromas and full-bodied structure, which at this early stage is an excellent sign.

Italian: 2000 was one of the finest post war vintages for Piedmont wines. The wines are still tannic and youthful. They will last for many years to come.

Bordeaux: 2000 wine: The fabled millennium vintage produced wines that are of true greatness and longevity. They are characterised as being powerful, concentrated with high tannins. The quality is due to ideal weather from the end of September. This allowed the grapes to develop thick skins from lack of moisture. For the first time in many years there was little rain in the harvest season allowing the skins to thicken further. This served to further concentrate the wines. The wines have evolved slowly and will continue to do so for many decades to come.

Bramaterra, 2000

Az. Agr. Sella

(DOC since 1979). Bramaterra is almost the only DOC of North Piemonte covering various comunes: it is produced in Masserano, Brusnengo, Roasio, Curino, Villa del Bosco, Lozzolo and Sostegno. Before the Second World War production volumes were higher than Barolo – only Roasio used to have 300 hectares and Bramaterra´s total might have been more than 2000 hectares.. It is one of Piemonte´s most curious wines: extremely difficult to find, but when you find a bottle it is always great!

Chateau Charmail, 2000

Haut Medoc

*** 93 Points Robert Parker ***
Reviews
"This is the finest effort I have ever tasted from this estate. It possesses great intensity, an inky purple colour to the rim, a tremendous nose of minerals, white acacia flowers, creme de cassis, and black cherries, with some licorice, vanilla, and smoke in the background. It is truly great stuff, although I would not push its ageing capacity beyond 10-12 years. This intense, full-throttle offering is made from a blend of 50% Merlot and equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc." Robert Parker Wine Advocate.

Under any new classification, this should certainly be a classed growth. Today it is among the leaders of the crus bourgeois. The 2000 is opulent, generous, stylish. The tannins are ripe and sweet, the fruit is finely balanced. (RV) (6/2003)

Very muscular with currants, mineral and nutmeg character. Full-bodied and chewy, with a long and lively finish. (JS) (3/2003)

Chateau Cissac, 2000

Haut Medoc

Good colour, great legs and nose. Quite nice when opened. Perhaps a trace of liquorice and a hint of 'medicinal' character but these initial characteristics soon faded.
After 3-4 hours - quite rich and aromatic with good cherry fruit and a touch of maraschino at the end. Tannins have integrated completely. Excellent with roast sirloin. Cellar Tracker Review

Chateau Duhart Milon Rothschild, 2000

Pauillac 4th Growth Classification

“An outstanding Duhart, certainly one of the best produced at this estate since the 1996, 1986, and 1982, this blend of 80.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19.5% Merlot reveals a deep ruby/purple colour as well as notes of lead pencil intermixed with wet stones, black currants, and a certain leafiness. Medium to full-bodied, ripe, and dense, but tightly-knit, with considerable tannin, it will require patience. For those willing to wait, it will be a sleeper of the vintage." Wine Advocate #146 (04/2003)
Rated 90/100 (Parker)
"Loads of plum, tobacco, meaty and cedary character on the nose. Full-bodied, with lots of chewy tannins and a long, luscious finish.

Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste, 2000

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe

*** 93 Points - Robert Parker ***

"This large-scaled wine has a saturated ruby/purple colour and a big creme de cassis nose, with a hint of licorice and tobacco. Still somewhat closed, this deep, full-bodied, luscious, muscular offering exhibits ripe tannin, loads of fruit, and tremendous purity. This is a gorgeous example of one of the most popular wines in the Medoc. Its savoury tannin and low acidity suggest it should be close to its plateau of drinkability in 4-6 years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020+." - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 93 points.

Chateau Haut Bailly, 2000

Grand Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan

2000 was a great vintage made from this Cru Classe estate that has received a lot of attention since the mid 1990s.
“Wonderful finesse and length to this wine. Loads of plum and berry, with hints of raspberry. Full-bodied, with a solid, velvety core of ripe fruit and tannins. Long finish. One of the few Pessacs better in 2000 than 1998…” 92 points Wine Spectator

“…Starting to show its wonderful depth, structure and complexity. It’s full-bodied with silky tannins and a pretty fruit character that goes from currants to sweet earth…” 94 points James Suckling

“The fruit is certainly rich, and the tannins are dusty rather than dry, but it is a wine which is developing more slowly, suggesting it is also a wine for long-term aging.

Chateau La Clotte, 2000

This is the finest La Clotte I have ever tasted. The 2000 reveals an opaque ruby/purple colour along with sweet aromas of liquid minerals, anise, plum, cassis, and smoke. Deep, rich, full-bodied, opulent, and moderately tannic, it will be at its peak between 2005-2016. Sexy stuff! A sleeper of the vintage. (RP) (4/2003)

Chateau Leoville Barton, 2000

St Julien 2eme Cru Classe

*** 95 Points - Robert Parker ***

"I found this to be one of the more backward wines of the 2000 vintage and gave it a window of maturity of 2015-2040 when I reviewed it in 2003. In my two recent tastings of it, I changed that window to 2018-2050, which probably says more than the following tasting note could say. This is a behemoth – dense, highly extracted, very tannic, broodingly backward, with a dense purple colour and very little evolution since it was bottled 8 years ago. Wonderfully sweet cedar and fruitcake notes are intermixed with hints of creme de cassis, licorice, and earthy forest floor.

Chateau Pichon Longueville Lalande, 2000

Pauillac 2me Cru Classe

*** 96 Points Robert Parker ***

I find this to be a spectacular Pichon Lalande! Dense purple in colour, with loads of coffee, mocha, creme de cassis, and chocolate notes, this is a somewhat unusual blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, and a whooping 10% Petit Verdot, with a little bit of Cabernet Franc. The Petit Verdot certainly gives the wine more of a tapenade, floral note, which I think can be interpreted by some as herbal. This is a rich, opulent, stunning Pichon Lalande that is beginning to drink beautifully, yet should continue to improve for at least another 10-15 years and last 30 or more years.
