2004 Wine and Port Vintage

Italian:

Visit our 2004 Wine and Port Offer Page

Produce of Piemonte in 2004 is very promising with few extremes of weather and well balanced wines. In Tuscany, the year was an exceptionally good vintage, central Italy’s equivalent of the perfect growing season that France experienced in 2005.

Bordeaux: The 2004 wine vintage marked a return to a more classic Bordeaux vintage. The wines are more traditionally styled, and will make fine drinking for many cellars. The vintage seems a little under-rated compared with 2003 and the wines represent good value.

Portugal: The 2004 vintage was not generally declared, but some wonderful single quinta vintages were bottled. These 2004 Vintage Ports show an intense deep purple-red colour, a factor that was strongly influenced by the August rains that softened the skins and allowed for better colour extraction. The nose is lifted and fresh, again thanks to the cooler August weather. The taste is rich, firm and with good acidity and fine peppery tannins. These wines are most attractive and will age extremely well, making them an ideal 20 year old wine gift for an anniversary this year.

Spain: A very good year, especially for Rioja, with wines that should last well.

This Year in History: Fun Fact: Long-running children's animated television series Peppa Pig premieres on the Nick Jr. Channel and Five.
Eurovision Winner: Ukraine with the song "Wild Dances" by Rusiana
Born in this Year: Millie Bobby Brown is a British actress. She gained recognition for playing Eleven in the Netflix science fiction series Stranger Things (2016–present), for which she received nominations for two Primetime Emmy Awards. Brown has starred in the monster film Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and its sequel Godzilla vs. Kong (2021). She also starred in and produced the Netflix mystery film Enola Holmes (2020) and its 2022 sequel. In 2018, Brown was featured in the Time 100 list of the world's most influential people and was appointed as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, the then youngest person selected for this position.

Tasting Notes:
The 20 Years White Port is a field blend from old vines (50 plus years). It was bottled in January 2015 with 105 grams per liter of residual sugar. Fresh, lovely and delectable, this is perfectly balanced, focused and young. There isn't a lot of complexity early on (noting that this a 20), but it does show some more mature flavors as it airs and warms. Impeccably balanced, this is a beautiful 20 that lingers endlessly and tastes just great.

** 90 Points (Outstanding) Parker **

"A sleeper of the vintage, Batailley’s complex 2004 is redolent with notes of cedar wood, spice box, plums, cassis, tar, and smoke. Medium to full-bodied, supple textured, layered, rich, and long, it marks the renaissance of this fifth-growth Pauillac that is displaying strong signs of moving into the big leagues. Saint-Julien

The outstanding 2004 exhibits a deep ruby/purple colour, sweet black cherries intermixed with subtle herbal notes, roasted meats, juices, and black currants. Chateau Lynch-Bages, 2004

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe
*** 92 Points Robert Parker ***
Half Bottle 37.5cl

An outstanding 2004 vintage Bordeaux wine from Chateau Lynch-Bages.

Ex-cellar bottle tasted blind at the Lynch Bages vertical. This has a noticeably clear, deep garnet colour. The nose is very clean and correct although it lacks a little complexity and flair: straightforward black fruits, cedar and pencil shavings. The medium-bodied palate shows a little hardness at first, but softens with aeration and soon adopts a more succulent texture with ripe black cherries, Doris plum and bilberry. Certainly this is a well balanced Pauillac packed full of ripe tannins with a crisp poised finish of black plum, cedar and cassis.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 2004

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe, Bordeaux
Small scuff on front label

A 2004 vintage bordeaux wine. Prince Charles agreed that the label for Mouton Rothschild 2004 could be illustrated with one of his watercolours, inspired by a French landscape, in celebration of the 1904 Entente Cordiale. He has added in his own handwriting also to the label.

Reviews:
*** 94 Points - In Asia ***
"Deep garnet-black. There’s a wonderful purity of fruit on the nose with aromas of warm blackcurrant, dark cherries, dark chocolate, anise, cinnamon and a waft of cedar. The palate is relatively rich with a medium to full body and a good amount of ripe, mouth-filling fruit. Medium+ level of velvety tannins and medium+ acidity provide nice balance.

Chateau Pavie Macquin, 2004

St. Emilion Grand Cru, Bordeaux
** 93 Points - Robert Parker **

The 2004 Pavie Macquin has a good intensity in the glass and equally deep, bold, soft-skinned, fully-ripe black cherry aromas on the nose. A very welcoming style with plush-textured, gently toasted black cherry and red fruit on the palate. The tannins are fairly soft at first then build in the mouth, while the colour belies a soft, careful extraction. A pure st-émilion with a good sense of luscious expressive fruit and a distinctive mineral quality.

Situated on clay and limestone soils above the better known Pavie-Decesse, this 37.5-acre vineyard is planted with 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.
