2010 Wine and Port Vintage

Italian: This vintage in Italy will be remembered as a good quality vintage, but with tiny production quantities. Early rain and late ripening sun just before harvest contributed to a good quality crop, especially for the late-ripening Nebbiolo grape used for Barolo wines.

Bordeaux: The 2010 for Bordeaux is widely hailed as a great vintage. The grapes were so laden with all the ingredients needed to make fine wine that there was no need for excessive intervention on the part of the winemaker; the best producers maintained a very light touch on the tiller and produced some outstanding wines. These would make a great 13 year old wine gift for an anniversary this year.

Burgundy: 2010 is a very classic vintage for Burgundy, with much more red fruit than black, notably cherries and raspberries, and very few green notes. The wines range from lighter to medium-full bodied, depending on the extraction choices made by the producer. The major villages of the Côte de Beaune have fared as well as the Côte de Nuits - there is huge pleasure in store for the Burgundy lover.

Champagne: A taxing year with dry conditions slowed grape development early in the season. However when the rain arrived in August it was torrential, causing widespread disease pressure. The return of dry conditions in September helped some producers over the line, but sorting in the vineyard and winery was crucial.

Portugal: After three very dry years, the winter of 2009-2010 saw an extraordinary change, with heavy rains for six months in a row. The viticultural year progressed well until July and August, when there was not one drop of rain. Temperatures in excess of 35ºC throughout most of August slowed the maturation cycle, as the vines cannot photosynthesise and mature the grapes properly in conditions of continued extreme heat. As a result the harvest began 5 days later than usual, but was conducted under mostly perfect conditions with a few welcome light showers in early September and only one overnight rainfall in early October.

Sauternes: Botrytis arrived late and quickly. Wines are ripe and juicy, with tropical fruit character.

Spain: This vintage was exceptional for Ribera del Duero with no excessive weather patterns, uniform ripeness of grapes and a quality to them as promising as during the 2004 vintage. Rioja also produced good quality wines, considered better than the year before.

This Year in History:
Fun Fact: the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, was officially opened to the public in 2010.
Eurovision Winner: Germany with the song "Satellite" by Lena.
Top Grossing Movie: Toy Story 3

Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac, 2010

Ryst Dupeyron Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
50cl bottle
Includes original orange colour cardboard gift box

The 2010 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

The Maison Ryst-Dupeyron was founded by Joseph Dupeyron in 1905.

Quinta do Arnozelo, Douro
Presented in Wooden Gift Box
***89 Points- Wine Enthusiast***

A 2010 Vintage Port Wine from Burmester.

Tasting Notes
Red and black fruit in the aroma, with much youth, blackberry compote. Very attractive in the mouth, elegant and with a beautiful presence, it proves very lively and fresh with citrus notes to mark presence. Will mature over the next 10-15 years.

Food Pairing
The association of Vintage Port with a mature blue cheese such as Stilton is one of the great classic food and wine combinations. The soft buttery texture, mellow character and piquancy of the cheese are perfectly matched by the powerfully majestic flavours of the Vintage Port.

Chateau Haut Batailley, 2010

Pauillac 5th Growth Classification, Bordeaux
*** 92+ Points Neal Martin ***

Château Batailley is one of the oldest residences in the town of Pauillac.
Vines have been planted on this land rich in history since the 17th century. In 1855, Château Batailley was classified in the Fifth Grand Cru category of the Médoc.

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, 2010

Gewürztraminer, Hengst Grand Cru, Alsace

The Hengst Grand Cru enjoys an old reputation for being the place to grow Gewurztraminer. The combination of a high lime content calcareous soil, some marl, a warm and dry setting, but not too precocious, provide the best conditions possible for this difficult grape variety. It was very saddening to see these old vines being hailed early July and in consequence, loose about half the crop. Perhaps the very small crop also allowed producing this wine? Who knows, but the result was a beautiful crop of dense, bright orange coloured grapes (modern clones are dark pink/red but less interesting). Interestingly, this wine fermented in two times, only finishing at the end of the 2011 harvest with a medium off dry sweetness.

Messias, 2010

Colheita Port, Douro

The Messias colheita port from the good 2010 vintage has been aged in a barrel until recent bottling. The extensive barrel ageing has given this wine a tawny colour with an expressive nose of wild dried fruit aromas where blackberry stands out. On the palate, caramel nuances complement the dried fruit leading to a sweet vanilla touch. It finishes long with a persistent and fine aftertaste.

Pair this luscious sweet port with almond tarts or caramel and chocolate based desserts. Crème brûlée is a classic combination as is Stilton cheese. Hard cheeses such as cheddar pair well too. It also goes remarkably well with salted roast nuts.
