About White Port

White Port has gained enormous populartity over recent years and is now the fastest growing category of Port. White Port is made from white grapes native to the Douro Valley such as Malvasia, Viosinho and Gouveio and many more depending on the producer. The fortification process is largely the same as for red Port but there is little or no maceration of the grapes. Generally, White Port is made in two styles dry and sweet. The sweet version is the traditional style of White Port and tends to be rich and grapey. The sweetest examples are known as `lagrima' (tear) after the viscosity of the wine in the glass. Examples of these may last as long as some of the red vintage ports and make an excellent aperitif. Since 2022 age classifications of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 years old can be used.

Serving White Port

White Port is best when served chilled either as an aperitif with a plate of nuts, or as a cocktail with tonic water.

To mix up your own at home, fill a highball glass or wine glass with ice. Add 50ml of white Port, top up with 100ml of a quality tonic water and stir gently to mix. Garnish with a slice of orange or lemon. Add a leaf of mint to finish
