Description

The Burmester Vintage Port 2017 is loaded with character and enormous ageing potential. From a fully declared year, this port is a blend of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional, this is warm, lightly textured with minerality and touched by toastiness. The tannins are soft, already well integrated with the floral black fruits. Drink the wine from 2023.

Grape Varieties: Touriga Nacional (50%) and Touriga Franca (50%), from vines more than 25 years old from Quinta do Arnozelo, Douro Superior.

The 2017 Vintage Port is mostly a 50/45 blend of Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional (Tinta Roriz for the rest) coming in with 102 grams of residual sugar. Like its Kopke sibling, this is all sourced from a single quinta (Quinta do Arnozelo), but it's not labeled as a single-quinta wine. Showing better structure and more concentration than the 2016, this is still a laid-back Port designed for relatively easy and early drinking. It is very ripe, and the finish is appealing. The flavors are fairly dark for this vintage, particularly early on. I'd give the nod to this for structure and depth as compared to last year's version, while the 2016 has more lifted and more expressive fruit—and more freshness. This isn't as bright as most 2017s (like its Kopke sibling, to name one).

Dense, perfumed tannins partner with the layers of jammy black fruits. Intense acidity is an element that promotes a fresher side to the wine while also suggesting aging potential. The wine will develop well, but certainly will not be ready before 2030.
