Chateau Brane Cantenac, 1985

Cantenac Margaux 2nd Growth Classification
Magnum 1.5L

The 1985 Brane Cantenac is a classic example of well-matured old-school Margaux with wonderful vegetal touch of bell peppers and chilies that lends a lovely, savory undercurrent to the wine without overwhelming any of the developed fruit notes or those mature umami nuance.

Château Brane-Cantenac was for many years the home of Lucien Lurton - it is now owned and run by his son Henri. Its vineyards are located west of the village of Cantenac in the Margaux appellation. Brane-Cantenac's vineyards are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Carmenère and lie on fine, gravelly soils.

Chateau Gloria, 1985

St Julien Cru Borgeois
Excellent Provenance

Château Gloria, back in the days when Henri Martin was alive and still running the property, was always one of the most user-friendly wines out of the blocks and a very good value, though of course, not generally built for the long haul. I was happy to see how well the 1985 Gloria continues to drink, with its wide open personality still quite enjoyable and showing no signs of imminent decline. The wine offers up a pretty nose of red and black cherries, cigar ash, a nice touch of soil and a gentle topnote of crushed violets. On the palate the wine is fullish, plush and nicely balanced, with melted tannins, fine focus and a long, juicy and very pleasing finish.

Chateau Les Templiers, 1985

Lalande de Pomerol

Bordeaux, in the south-west of France, needs little introduction to anyone with an interest in wine. One of the world's most prolific wine regions, it also manages to rank among the most famous and prestigious. The secrets of Bordeaux's wine success (other than magical Bordeaux Blend) are its three trump cards: diversity, quality and quantity. The majority of Bordeaux wines are the dry, medium-bodied reds that made the region famous.

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1985

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe

*** 92 Points - Parker ***

"The 1985 has been totally disarming, seductive, and sexy since birth. Its corpulence, medium to full-bodied personality, low acidity, attractive silkiness, and copious quantities of herb-tinged cassis fruit have always made this wine a winner. It is beginning to display a few signs that it is at its peak of maturity and will not get any better. In fact, it might be best consumed over the next 5-10 years. As it sat in the glass, the 1985 faded more than any other vintage, but its immense up-front pleasure cannot be denied. This is a wine to decant right before serving, and not to linger over.

Chateau Talbot, 1985

St Julien, 4me Cru Classe

The 1985 Chateau Talbot is from a great vintage. An amazing wine that had aged very well, complex flavors of underbrush, wet forest floor, plenty of fruit and velvety lush tannins.

Owned by the Cordier family since 1917, the wines of Château Talbot have always enjoyed particular acclaim in the UK. An impressive 107 hectares are under vine here, with around 86% being devoted to Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are strong, sturdy and built to last, with a certain ‘gout de terroir’. As well as the Grand Vin, small amounts of a second wine Connetable de Talbot and a white wine, Caillou Blanc may be found.

Dao, 1985

Porta dos Cavaleiros

Caves S. Joao, established in 1920, became a dominant force in Portuguese wine making in the early 20th century with their houses Porta dos Cavaleiros in Dao and Frei Joao in Bairrada. Given the shifting trends in consumer preferences, Bairrada and Dao fell to obscurity in the 1990s when critical influence drove the demand for bigger, extracted, warmer climate wines. As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character,

Dolcetto, 1985

di Dogliani, Luigi Einaudi

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

Fonseca Port, 1985

Vintage Port
Bin-soiled label

Excellent Provenance. These bottles of Fonseca 1985 Vintage Port have been shipped straight from Fonseca's Cellars in Oporto to our cellars in Fordingbridge. They are in perfect condition.

The 1985 Fonseca Vintage Port has a lovely nose of maturing port, finely styled and just screaming quality. The palate carries a svelte texture, with a creamy, flattering character. There is purity, balance, a clean, bright quality and despite this lots of appealing grip. This has great impact, and yet is so welcoming and alluring. Excellent wine, and a great example of the vintage. (November 2006).

Dense ruby/purple with the Oriental spice-box aroma,

Montepulciano, 1985

d'Abruzzo, Miglianico

Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche and Molise regions. The variety was named after the Tuscan parish of Montepulciano, but, confusingly, is not used in the famous wines produced there (see Vino Nobile di Montepulciano). Globally appreciated for their soft flavors, strong color and gentle tannins, Montepulciano wines are typically best consumed in their youth and with food. The deep-purple juice of Montepulciano grapes is used in varying proportions to produce wines under roughly 50 of Italy's DOC and DOCG titles. Although sometimes used on its own,

Nebbiolo D'Alba, 1985

Alfredo Prunotto - Riserva

The Nebbiolo has a lovely earthy bouquet. The nose has cherries, dark cherries, tar and slight dried rose notes. Complex and layered. Nice acidity. Medium tannins still present. Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine. Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavored wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

Rioja, 1985

Remelluri Reserva, Rioja

In this wine from old vines on the Remelluri estate owned by Telmo Rodriguez & his sister Amaia, Tempranillo grape is blended with a little Graciano and Garnacha (Grenache); The wine from this vintage is still displaying lots of fruit. In addition the cooler climate has helped combine the earthy red fruit with spice and savouriness - and with amazing elegance. It's a complex Rioja Reserva and a refreshing acidity cuts through the richness making it very drinkable indeed.

Roero, 1985

Battaglino Sergio - Vigneti 'dij Patrunet'

The typical red Roero Rosso wine is characterized by spice-tinged aromas of black forest fruits and succulent, sour cherries. Medium-bodied and relatively high in tannins, it is less muscularly structured (and less age-worthy) than the wines of nearby Barolo and Barbaresco.

Taylor's Port, 1985

Vintage Port

"Typical for Taylor's. Notes of woodspice and pepper, very slightly spirity. Nevertheless, a delicious texture on entry, supple and stylish, although with a very firm weight, firm tannins and good acids. Again this is fine to drink now, although it still holds some potential now. Very good indeed, bordering on excellent. From a Port Styles tasting." 17.5+/20 (November 2007), Wine Doctor (online).

Valtellina, 1985

Fratelli Bettini

Valtellina is one of Italy’s most dramatic wine regions, located in Lombardy, the vineyards are located on steep mountains. The principal grape variety is Chiavennasca (the local name for Piedmont’s Nebbiolo and an Italian grape varietal that has been cultivated since medieval times here). The DOCG wines are generally comprised of at least 90% Chiavennasca and then blended with other quality local grapes like Brugnola, Rossola, Pignola. Then there is a DOC Valtellina Rosso (also called Rosso di Valtellina DOC) which requires at least 80% of the blend be Chiavennasca and does not have minimum ageing requirements.

Exclusive to VWP.

Tasting Notes: The Palmer 40 Year tawny is a careful blend of many traditional grape varieties from selected vineyards in various areas of the Douro Demarcated Region, patiently aged to resemble the taste of a port that was aged for 40 years in old oak casks. The 40 Year old has a pronounced aroma intensity that is very rich with nuts and baked cherry. There is further complexity of nutmeg and cream. On the palate the wine is very balanced between acidity and sweetness that gives a luxurious mouthfeel. Lovely richness of fruitcake, fig, baked plum, caramel and toffee. Tasting Notes:
The NV +40 Year Old Tawny Porto is a field blend bottled in 2014 with 114 grams of residual sugar and a bar-top cork. Personally, I like the 30 slightly more, but there are some stylistic differences and they are both very fine. The 30 is livelier and crisper. However, this +40 is distinguished by that "+.

50cl bottle
Includes gift box
Special Offer | Was £99 | Now £79.95

The 1984 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

The Maison Ryst-Dupeyron was founded by Joseph Dupeyron in 1905.

This wine overflows seduction and an enormous refinement. A feeling that is extended in the long and complex finish.
