Vintage Port

Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. It excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavours. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. When it is young, it often loses out in blind tastings to the heavier, weightier, more tannic wines, but I always find myself upgrading my opinion of Fonseca after it has had 7-10 years of age. Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Italy's north-western Piedmont region. This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. The vines are generally grown on limestone-rich marl soils. similar to the Tortonium soils of the Barolo and La Morra areas in Barolo. Clear ruby red with almost no bricking. Classic St. Julien nose with black currants, tobacco leaves and some pencil shavings. No signs of oxidation. On the palate surprisingly vigorous for a wine with 37 years under its belt. Acidity clearly dominates the almost completely resolved tannins. Slightly astringent towards the medium+ finish. A very impressive effort from Gruaud Larose in a rather weak vintage.
