Chateau Haut Brion, 1983

Pessac-Leognan First Growth Classification (faded label)

"The fully mature 1983 is a very good wine that has fine depth, rich, soft, fat, lush fruit, and a good measure of soft tannins in the finish. The overall impression is of a forward, ripe, and voluptuous wine." - Robert Parker 3rd Edition

Chateau La Tour de Grenet, 1983

New

Lussac st Emilion

This is a wine made to be enjoyed. The substance is ripe but not too jam-like, the structure has a delicate character, while the wine is imposing overall. It is velvety smooth, with good colour, with fruity and floral aromas. The tower, built in the 19th century, gave its name to the vineyard. The property belonged to the Abbaye de Faize in the 16th century. In 1970, it became the property of the Brunot family. As a result of its remarkably sunny position on one of the highest slopes of the region and of its clay-limestone soil, the vines produce grapes which give a full bodied wine , full of vigour that keep extremely well.

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1983

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe

*** 88 points Wine Journal ***

Reviews
"This has a light nose, mulberry, a touch of wild mushroom, sloe and a touch of caramel. Moderate definition. Palate is medium-bodied, quite rustic tannins, mulberry, touch of leather, the acidity a little sharp and attacking. Course, peppery finish." Neil Martin Wine Journal tasted 2009.

Chateau Margaux, 1983

Margaux 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 96 points Robert Parker ***
*** 96 Points Wine Journal ***

Reviews
"As I have noted consistently, this can be a breathtaking wine, but having tasted it close to a dozen times since the last edition of this book, over half the bottles were marred by tainted corks. In fact, one would almost wonder if there was TCA problem in part of the wine storage area. The percentage of corked half-bottles is even higher than in the regular format. However, when clean this 1983, which has seemingly reached full maturity far faster than I would have guessed a mere four years ago, has a dense, murky plum/purple color and a gorgeous nose of smoked herbs,

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1983

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 91 Points - Robert Parker ***
*** 94-96 Points - Wine Journal ***

Reviews: "Evolving in a positive fashion, 1983 is turning out to be a fine vintage for Mouton. Although not a big wine, this medium-weight Mouton displays an attractive nose of blackcurrants, black-cherries, olives, and minerals. Medium-bodied, with sweet but noticeable tannin in the finish, as well as beautiful elegance and complexity, this wine is close to reaching its plateau of maturity. I have always thought it resembled this property's 1966. It should last for another 20 years. Last tasted, 7/93." Robert Parker Wine Advocate 1993

"Dense cedary nose with lots of plum, cassis and cigar box aromas.

Chateau Palmer, 1983

Margaux Grand Cru Classe

An exceptional wine scoring 97/100 Parker Points: "One of the superb wines of the vintage, the 1983 Palmer continues to display a saturated purple/garnet color, and an intense perfume of jammy black fruits, smoked meats, flowers, cedar, and Asian spices. Super-concentrated, powerful, and full-bodied, this huge, unctuously textured wine is approaching its plateau of maturity. Because of the high Merlot content it can easily be drunk now, yet promises to last for another 20-25 years. I remain convinced that the 1983 will be the most powerful Palmer since the compelling 1961. Last tasted 9/97" Parker, Bordeaux 3rd Ed.

Chateau Pouget, 1983

New

Margaux

This from Margaux from the 1983 wine vintage is brick red fading to transparency at the edges; good legs. Closed nose and flavor upon serving, but with an evident structure. After 30-45 minutes in the glass, it began to open up and continued to do so over the next two hours. Dark cherry flavors; some detected oak. After 3 hours, it had maintained its structure and flavors, while never strong, and become more pronounced. Excellent wine for its age and pedigree.

Chateau Verdignan, 1983

Haut Medoc

This is a meaty, rustic, fleshy, warm nose that is verging on diffuse but manages to pull back from that, more open-knit and generous. The palate is fleshy and seductive with lovely ripe red-berried fruit, touches of cranberry, gravel and earth. It is well-knit on the rounded, lush finish, although not as complex as other 1983's

Fonseca Port, 1983

Vintage Port

An outstanding Port rating 92/100 from an outstanding vintage. Robert Parker writes of this port... "Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. If Fonseca lacks the sheer weight and power of a Taylor, Dow or Warre, or the opulent sweetness and intensity of a Graham, it excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavors. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. When it is young, it often loses out in blind tastings to the heavier, weightier, more tannic wines, but I always find myself upgrading my opinion of Fonseca after it has had 7-10 years of age.

Graham's Port, 1983

Graham's 1983 Vintage Port is a real star performer for the excellent 1983 vintage. The Port is full-bodied, has rich floral and violet aromas, masses of strawberry flavours, very good balance. Long. Subtle finish. Excellent! This port is nicely in the drinking window but will last for decades more!

Reviews:
92 points.
Graham is another great port house, producing one of the deepest-colored and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous.

Janneau, 1983

Armagnac 1983 Vintage

The great vintages or millésimés of Janneau are the expression of a single year, most commonly of a single cask. Produced exclusively with the single distillation process, they are the quintessence of this precious distillate aged over the years. Each vintage expresses its unique character. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a sharp contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish.

Kopke Port, 1983

Vintage Port

This is one of those noses where you can keep going back and finding things you think it smells like. I really like that. A bit punchy initially with it's alcohol, the finish is where this wine really shines. Starts off as fresh popcorn, turning hazelnuts and honey, then granola and brown sugar..... off into a 40-second long finish with various evolution in which I am sure different people would find different things. Truly delicious. This wine is very, very good. I love it when a wine forces you to think about it, and this does just that. Captivating, complex, intense and delicious.
