Chateau d'Yquem, 1984
Sauternes 1er Cru Classe Individual Yquem Wooden Case
Yquem is indisputedly the best wine in Sauternes and may well be the finest sweet wine in the world.
Reviews "1984 is a surprisingly good year made under very trying conditions. D'Yquem began its harvest on October 15th and made its last pass through the vineyards on November 13th. Seventy-five percent of the crop was retained for d'Yquem. The wine at present exhibits a great deal of smoky oak in its bouquet, which is also filled with scents of smoked almonds, cooked pineapples, and honey and caramel. In the mouth, the wine is less flamboyant, with less glycerin and power than usual, but it is still a rich, full-bodied d'Yquem with a great deal of personality and character. …

Porta dos Cavaleiros
Special Offer | was £99 | Now £79.95
Caves S. Joao, established in 1920, became a dominant force in Portuguese wine making in the early 20th century with their houses Porta dos Cavaleiros in Dao and Frei Joao in Bairrada. Given the shifting trends in consumer preferences, Bairrada and Dao fell to obscurity in the 1990s when critical influence drove the demand for bigger, extracted, warmer climate wines. As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character, …

Dows 40 Year Old Tawny Port A beautiful translucent amber-golden colour and an almost transparent rim with exquisite fragrances of delicate dry fruit coupled with a hint of fine marmalade. Dow’s Port is one of the most famous names in the Port trade and today is owned and managed by the fifth generation of the Symington family. The family, whose experience dates back over 100 years, supervises all the vineyards, winemaking and ageing of this wine. …

Graham's Port, 1984
Quinta dos Malvedos Vintage Port
Grahams Library stock release
The 1984 Grahams Malvados has been stored in Grahams cellars until purchase by VWP in 2021 - The bottles are in exceptional condition.
The 1984 still has some youth evident on the colour. A delightful, fruit-laden nose, which takes considerable time in the glass to open up. Macerated black fruits and figs, covered in a thin layer of chocolate. Rich, full bodied, but quite forward and fruit dominated on the palate. A lovely texture, quite creamy and sweet, to match this fruit. Some powerful tannins in the background, although these really do play a minor role, only showing on the finish.
At the heart of Graham’s Vintage Ports are the wines from the company’s famed Quinta dos Malvedos. …

40 Year Old Tawny Port
450cl Bottle - in wooden presentation box
Graham's 40 Years Old is made from wines of the very highest quality which, following careful selection, are matured in seasoned oak casks of until their peak of maturity is reached. These are among the most demanding and challenging styles of Port to produce requiring great skill and years of experience from the winemaker and blender. Calem Port, 1983
Vintage Port
The Calem Vinatge Port from the excellent 1983 vintage has flavours of redcurrant, violet and leather perfume, an intense complex and developing flavour profile with an exceptionally long finish.
Reviews
"This has a dense, glossy and youthful appearance - very impressive for the age of this wine. Accordingly the nose is dominated by a core of round, sweet, accessible fruit. What a lovely palate! Powerful yet elegant, with a fine balance and fluidity. There's still quite a thick seam of powerful tannin running through the wine, particularly on the finish. And it has incredible length - this is great wine. …

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1983
St Estephe, 2nd Growth Classification
This is a very fine 1983: Far superior on the nose to the 1988. Damson, mulberry and a touch of earth. Fine definition. Perhaps even a little mint leaf. The palate is well-defined with rounded, plummy damson fruit. Not complex but there is a vigour and charm here. Fresh acidity. Becomes quite minerally in the finish. Drinking superbly now.

Chateau Rieussec, 1983
Sauternes 1er Grand Cru Classe
Sweet White Wine
The 1983 Chateau Rieussec and one of many decent wines produced in Bordeaux in this year. Colour rusty, deep gold. A beguiling bouquet of apricot, honey, molasses, old English Christmas cake, toffee and smoke. A beautiful texture in the mouth, weighty, viscous and satiny. Very rich, toffee, honey, treacle and poached pears and apricots. Very ripe but with sufficient acidity to hold it all together. Complex and multi-layered.
Château Rieussec is a prestigious Bordeaux wine estate located in the Sauternes appellation, within the Bordeaux wine region of France. The estate is well-known for producing sweet white wines, specifically Sauternes, which are crafted from Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle grapes affected by noble rot. …

Churchill's Port, 1983
Quinta do Agua Alta
Despite its thoroughly traditional-sounding name Churchill is the newest of the British-owned Port companies, founded in 1981 by J. Graham.
Quinta Agua Alta is named after the spring at the top of the vineyard and it produces wonderfully pure and fresh water that bubbles up through the granite rock below the thin top soil. Olives and figs grow in abundance around the vineyard which produces a quite stunninly powerful port.
Deep purple in colour with a mass of soft and concentrated fruit. There's plenty of tannin to give structure and a pleasing earthiness on the finish. This is the perfect way to round off a good dinner. …

Fonseca Port, 1983

Fonseca is one of our all-time favourites. Fonseca's 1983-vintage Port is made with a harvest that survived the first snowfall in Pinhão in 20 years and heavy rain through the spring. The result is intense aromas of dark chocolate, prune, fig and hints of rich double cream. Consider pairing its chocolate, fig, prune, raisin and walnut flavours with a cheeseboard or with festive fare over the Christmas period.
An outstanding Port rating 92/100 from an outstanding vintage. Robert Parker writes of this port... "Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. …

The 1983 Ramos Pinto has a startling intensity with a superb and slightly evolved cherry-red colour. A notoriously intense, lively and energetic nose that gives it a masculine quality. Tokaji, 1983
Tokaji Royal Aszu Essencia (Half litre, 50cl), Hungary
Situated along the southern slopes of the Zemplén Mountains, Tokaj is characterized by late springs and short growing seasons. The average temperatures are generally cool, with long, sunny summers and dry autumns. Tokaj’s soil is largely clay or loess with a volcanic substratum; vines are approximately 20 years old. The meeting of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers in Tokaj creates a mist similar to that of the fog in Sauternes. The mist encourages “botrytis cinerea,” or “noble rot,” which dries and shrivels the Furmint, Hárslevelü and Muscat grape varieties that comprise Tokaji wines, and concentrates the sugars. …
