Chateau Leoville Poyferre, 1999

St Julien 2me Cru Classe, Bordeaux
*** 93 Points - Robert Parker ***

*** 93 Points - Robert Parker ***

Tasted at the 1999 horizontal at Bordeaux Index. One of my favourite ‘99s, this has a very lifted, well-defined nose that eschews the more opulent bouquet that Didier sometimes conjures. Blackberry, cedar, raspberry leaf, pencil shavings. The palate is medium-bodied, not quite as ebullient as the bottle in Bordeaux last year, but it has great vivacity and purity towards the finish. Sappy blackberry, boysenberry and strawberry with a touch of Asian spice. Excellent. Drink now-2025. Tasted June 2009, Neal Martin, RobertParker.com, July 2009

It is a superb match for desserts and mince pies.

Chateau d'Yquem, 1998

Sauternes 1er Cru Classe
Half bottle 37.5cl

‘A beautiful, slightly golden yellow, this wine is still very young to express much on the initial nose. After swirling, and even more so after a few minutes in the glass, there come scents of citrus, raisins and also more floral aromas with delicate lime flower. These are still early days and time is needed for these impressions to develop. In the mouth the great quality and potential are obvious. The attack is round, and the volume quickly fills the whole mouth. What sweetness and what pleasure - with just enough acidity. Flavours of mandarin, apricot, fruit paste, then the vanillary, lightly grilled notes associated with the long élevage in barrel.

Chateau Gruaud Larose, 1998

Saint-Julien, Bordeaux

The 1998 Gruaud Larose appears to be a potential sleeper of the vintage, and may merit an outstanding score. It is a powerful, bulky style of Gruaud-Larose, with a dark ruby/purple color, and plenty of cassis, spicy new oak, and roasted herbs in the jammy nose. On the palate, the wine has lost much of the forward precociousness it was revealing last spring, now boasting loads of tannin in its powerful, muscular flavors.

Chateau Guiraud, 1998

*** 90 Points - Outstanding - Robert Parker ***

The 1998 Chateau Guiraud has an attractive nose of melted candle wax, brown sugar and marmalade that blossoms in the glass. The palate is clean and pure on the entry with crisp acidity. It is a more feminine, lithe Sauternes compared to the 1997 with a pretty peach and dried apricot finish interlaced with spice. Fine. Drink now-2020. Tasted April 2013. eRobert Parker.

Quinta do Vesuvio, 1998

Vintage Port, Douro

Vintage Report:
After a mild June, July and August were hot and dry, leading to good even maturation, with the Tinta Barroca looking particularly promising. Maturation studies carried out between 19th August and the beginning of the vintage, determined the following picking order at Vesuvio: Old vineyards; Tinta Barroca; Tinta Amarela; Tinta Roriz; Touriga Nacional; Tinto Cão; and Touriga Franca. Picking began on the 21nd September and continued until 4th October; great care being taken to select and vinify the very best fruit separately, once perfect ripeness had been achieved. Grape quality was very good with average sugar readings an excellent 12o-13o Baumé.

Very typical Taylor's style on the nose, rather reserved, spicy and stylish fruit.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1997

St Estephe, 2nd Growth Classification, Bordeaux

Deep garnet color. Perfumed, vibrant aromas of black cherry, cassis, leather and oak spice. Big, sweet and rich, with lush black cherry and black raspberry fruit already offering enticing inner-mouth flavor. Less oaky on the palate than on the nose. Just a hint of herbaceousness. Finishes subtle and quite long, with impressively even, ripe tannins but not quite the snap of the '96. A terrific effort for the vintage. Stephen Tanzer Vinous

Barros Port, 1996

Colheita Port
***Decanter 95 points- Gold Award Winner 2021***

Vivid golden colour. Rich and elegant nose, combining the dried fruits aromas with the aromatic wood notes. Soft and silky in the taste, full with ripe figs and sweet flavours. A sensation of depth, in an elegant and distinctive style. Perfect and overwhelming finish.

Colheita, or single harvest ports, are aged in the barrel. Contrast this with vintage ports which are aged in the bottle and only have a short drinking window after opening. Colheita ports have had air working on them through the cask during all the years of aging, giving them a open-life of a month or longer. Lighter and more delicate than vintage ports,

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1996

St Estephe, 2me Cru Classe
*** 93 Points Robert Parker ***

*** 93 Points Robert Parker ***

Reviews; "Made from 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, this is a huge, backward wine. The 1996 possesses an opaque purple color, as well as pure aromatics consisting of cassis, grilled herbs, coffee, and toasty new oak. Massive in the mouth, and one of the most structured and concentrated young Cos d'Estournels I have ever tasted, this thick, structured, tannic wine has closed down significantly since bottling. It requires 7-8 years of cellaring, and should last for 30-35 years. It is a fabulous Cos, but patience is required. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2030.

Chateau Pichon-Longueville, Baron, 1996

Sale

Pauillac, 2nd Growth Classification
*** 94 Points, The Wine Advocate ***
Special Offer | Was £249 | Now £195

The 1996 Pichon-Longueville Baron has a deep garnet core with some bricking on the rim. The nose is fragrant and generous with more red fruit than black, cedar and tobacco, fine definition, perhaps a little rustic in keeping with the winemaking at the time, but certainly giving lots of pleasure. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin -- a cohesive Pauillac with plenty of depth and fine balance. The acidity lends this plenty of freshness and it does not shortchange you with plenty of tarry, cedary fruit. You come away with the impression that this Pichon Baron is going to continue to improve although I would not burn anyone at the stake for opening it now.

Quinta Poço do Lobo - Cabernet
***91 Points - Robert Parker***
Special Offer | Was £69 | Now 49.95
Excellent Provenance

The 1995 Quinta Poço do Lobo from caves St Joao are an exceptional experience at a nice price. Plus, the provenance is perfect—re-released direct from the winery.

The 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva Quinta do Poço do Lobo is unoaked and comes in at 13.5% alcohol. This Reserva has more power than the regular reds and much riper fruit. It is bigger and fresher in every respect. Intense and powerful, this is nuanced by cassis and red fruits. It ends with a big finish. There are some typical nuances of aging Cab too. So, while it is fresh for its age, it hardly tastes like a young red. Many will consider that a good thing.
