Chateau Cheval Blanc, 1966

St Emilion Premiere Grand Cru Classe

*** Oustanding! - Reviews Cellar Tracker. ***

*** 94 Points Neil Martin - Wine Journal ***

Reviews:
"Still garnet in the glass, edges lightening up only somewhat. Medium intense nose of damp soil, ferns, some damp tobacco. Tertiary and vegetal, although not in an entirely dissatisfying way. Livens up with a bit of coaxing: tea leaves, peppermint, menthol, echinacea. Ethereal but with power in the background. Big berry fruit on the palate, fully mature with tannins almost all resolved. Damp leathers. Sweet red cherry fruit surpasses currant and rhubarb. Tingling mouthfeel. A beautiful and special glass.

Chateau Latour, 1966

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe (Mid Shoulder- label damp affected)

*** 96 Points Robert Parker ***
*** 95 Points Wine Journal ***

Reviews
"The wine of the vintage, the 1966 Latour is a classic, old style Bordeaux that has required decades to become drinkable. A dark, opaque garnet color is followed by a fabulous nose of cedar, sweet leather, black fruits, prunes, and roasted walnuts, refreshing underlying acidity, sweet but noticeable tannin, and a spicy finish. This powerful, vigorous, immensely impressive, concentrated Latour has reached its plateau of maturity, where it will remain for another 10-20 years.

"The Latour ’66 remains one of the great wines of the vintage.

Chateau Leoville Poyferre, 1966

St Julien 2me Growth Classification (MAGNUM Format 150cl)

Now fully mature, this medium-bodied, stylish wine has good black currant fruit, a complex, yet restrained bouquet of cedar and spices, and a good crisp, clean finish.

The vineyards at Leoville Poyferre originally formed part of the great Leoville estate. Following the death of Marquis de la Cases, the vast property was split into three; the Marquis’ son Jean-Pierre took the third that is now Leoville Las Cases, the Marquis’ daughter, Jeanne’s share became what we know as Leoville Poyferre following her marriage to the Baron de Poyferre and the final third was auctioned off and purchased by Hugh Barton.

*** 91 points - Wine Journal ***

Review:
"this is a classic mature Claret that is delectable to drink now…and not too much later. There is a palpable coolness, almost aloofness on the nose that one often finds on this vintage, the overriding sense that this was a good vintage but not a hot one. It offers graphite, sous-bois and tobacco, the fruit having long ebbed away, yet it is still fresh and beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied and a little austere. Yet there is a sense of natural balance with fresh acidity and beguiling tertiary and cedar notes towards the finish. Wonderful.

Chateau Saint Pierre, 1966

Saint Julien (MAGNUM)

Surprisingly good, and filled with truffles, spice, cigar box, earth, black currants and cherry, the wine offers the silky, patina of age along with the earthy, spicy, tobacco laden flavors that can only come with serious bottle age. This is not going to improve, but it's great today.

Chateau Yquem, 1966

Sauternes 1er Grand cru Classe

A good wine. On the nose, there is some orange marmalade, honey and spice character in this wine. Turns quite woody, with lots of caramel.

YQUEM HARVEST NOTES: Weather was mediocre in summer, but improved in autumn. The harvest was very long: 48 days' work out of 55 to bring in a very worthwhile and slightly above average crop in terms of volume. A very rich vintage.

Cotes du Rhone, 1966

Antonin Rodet

Côtes du Rhône is a huge appellation in the south of France encompassing 40,300 ha. Plenty of white and rosé wine is produced in Côtes du Rhône but there can be no doubt that red is king. Usually Grenache will dominate the blend (except in the north where Syrah is allowed to be top dog, but these wines are relatively few) and is normally partnered with Syrah and/or Mourvèdre but a further 18 varieties are also permitted! A cheerful example might be light, soft, fruity and easy-drinking, while the finest examples may be full-bodied, concentrated, intense, spicy and ageworthy. But what they all invariably have in common is a fabulous sense of place and lashings of personality and character.

Dom Perignon, 1966

Champagne - Brut

"Definitely fully mature champagne. Amber colour with a rather low key nose initially which opened out to something attractive and lightly sherrified nose that really speaks to the jamon iberico we're served at this dinner at Taillevent organised by François Audouze, his 170th wine dinner. Very deep and rich yet dry. Real lift to this wine but it also has a deep, throat- warming finish. There's a note of cheddar on the nose. Very clean and revitalising. Rich and dense." Jancis Robinson

Fonseca Port, 1966

Vintage Port

Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. It excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavours. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. The 1966 is a top success for that vintage and is fully mature, but will hold for 15 or more years.

Graham's Port, 1966

Vintage Port

Graham's is a great port house, producing one of the deepest-coloured and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor's and Fonseca, Graham's has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous. The 1966 is full, vigorous, rich and classy on the palate. Not too sweet. This is a big concentrated, very fine example. Bags of life ahead of it.
