Château Montrose is located in the east of St Estèphe (the northern most of the great Médoc communes), just north of the hamlet of Marbuzet, on a gravel knoll only 800 metres from the Gironde estuary. As far as the great wines of Bordeaux go Château Montrose is somewhat of a youngster having been founded in 1815. However this beautiful vineyard has produced one of Bordeaux's most consistent and respected wines for over 150 years. It is considered to be one of the top St Estèphe's and is known as the “Latour of St Estèphe”.

"Dark garnet, slightly brown that I was worried it was bricked. Quite closed up when we first opened it. After about an hour decanted, it became very vibrant and lively. Surprisingly bright black berries and fruit. Still a good amount of acidity which leaves it tasting fresh. The 1961 Troplong Mondot is a very dark plummy red colour.
The nose is overwhelming with dark fruit some mushroom and vanilla. After 30 minutes in the glass it seems to go down after showing more red cherry fruit and a higher acidity. Crusted port is usually a blend of port wine from several vintages, although single vintage crusted ports have sometimes been made in the past (the '61 Malvedos featured here being one of these rare examples). Unlike vintage port, which has to be sourced from grapes from a single vintage, crusted port affords the port blender the opportunity to make best use of the varying characteristics of different vintages. Crusted port is bottled unfiltered, and sealed with a driven cork. Like vintage port it needs to be decanted before drinking.

Macon is the name for the red and white wines which come from the Mâconnais section of Burgundy, France. This region is the most southerly in Burgundy, and also the largest. There are 42 villages in the Mâconnais region, broken out into seven designations: Macon, Macon Superieur, Macon Village, Pouilly Fuissé, Pouilly Loche, Pouilly Vinzele, and Saint Veran. The majority of wines from Macon are red wines, using the gamay noir, pinot noir, and pinot gris grapes. These are light wines, and should be drunk young.
