Raboso is a red wine grape grown primarily in Eastern part of Veneto. It is often called Raboso Piave, from the name of the river where it has found a eletive zone of production. It produces deep-colored wine, with notably high levels of tannin no high alcohol content but above all it always gives very high acid contents. The name, raboxo in the native Venetian language, means angry, because angry is the sensation in the mouth when this wine is drunk young. Raboso was in the past the most cultivated grape varieties in Eastern of Veneto, it was the perfect wine for the Venetian navigators aroud the world, indeed they called it vin de viajo wine of travel, because it was the most resistant to aging and transport.

This is the most representative and prestigious wine of the entire Valtellina region. It can be produced in all valleys (from Ardenno to Tirano), but only in hilly, well exposed vineyards having with loose soil and gravel. This wine is obtained from hand-made selection of the best bunches of Nebbiolo-Chiavennasca grapes, which are dried on wooden racks in a well ventilated and dry room, a "Fruttaio", for at least 110 days until late January. During this winter time the climate of the Valtellina region does all the work, drying the grapes. By late January the grapes have lost about 40% of their weight, the berries are dry and their concentrated juice has developed specific and very intense aromatic substances.

On the palate, ripe and sweet not quite in tune but still quite opulent with integrated tannins. Excellent finish - my first tasting of a 68 and quite a surprise for a generally undeclared year. 1968 Taylor's Single Harvest Colheita, 1968

Single Harvest Tawny Port (Presented in an original Taylor's Box as illustrated)

During its five decades of ageing in oak casks, this wine has taken on an attractive pale mahogany colour with olive amber highlights. On the nose, the wine displays fine oaky aromas and complex spicy, nutty, cigar box notes against a warm mellow background of butterscotch and molasses. Blandys Madeira, 1968

Sercial Madeira (75cl Bottle)

Blandy’s Vintage Sercial 1968 is a single harvest Madeira. This wine was aged for 38 years in seasoned American oak casks in the traditional ‘Canteiro’ system, whereby the casks were gradually transferred from the top floors of the lodge, where it is naturally warmer, to the middle floors and eventually to the ground floor where it is cooler. The wine was regularly racked and when it reached the desired stage of maturity it was bottled.

Only a limited number of bottles of this wine were released. Vintage (or Frasquiera) Madeira must be aged in cask for a minimum of 20 years, in practise they are aged for much longer, before being bottled under Madeira Wine Institute supervision.

This gentle giant is one of the very best of the Ports I have had from the lackluster 1967 vintage, which managed to produce a few very well-made VPs. The Sandeman is still in great shape. Due to the lighting it is impossible to tell the color. The aromatics dance out of the glass with ultra-potent, sweet violet and floral notes with a hint of mocha.
