Quevedo, 1994

Colheita Port

Only 300 bottles released by popular demand. The 1994 Quevedo was voted "Port of the Night" during a recent tasting with Oscar and so we persuaded him to release a small quantity.

The 1994 Quevedo Colheita is an outstanding quality and value effort from this family-run estate. Oscar and Claudia Quevedo have produced a light brown port with hints of amber. On the palate there are nuts and a lovely light molasses note with coffee and spices The finish is long and lingering as befits a quality port such as this. Outstanding!

Colheita Port Storage and Serving Advice:
Colheita Port should be stored in a cool and dry place, sheltered from light and temperature fluctuations, and the bottle should remain in an upright position.

Quinta da Devesa

30 year old Tawny Port in presentation box (75cl)
***94 Points - Robert Parker***

This Port Wine is the result of a blend of aged wine from Quinta da Devesa, developed with noble grapes used in the Douro region, aged in wooden casks at the Quinta da Devesa cellars.

Tasting Notes:
The NV 30 Year Old Tawny Porto was bottled in 2017 with a bar-top cork and 114 grams of sugar. Another complex, crisp tawny, this adds power and depth to the 20 this issue, but it is mostly along the same lines. Showing exceptional length on the finish, this lingers beautifully. This is impressive on many fronts, if you appreciate complexity more July 2019 (Mark Squires)

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1994

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe

The 1994 Chateau Lynch-Bages reveals a lovely perfumed nose of red fruit, cassis, cedar and graphite. On the palate, the fruit is round and ripe with a long balanced finish. A great wine in its own right and a pleasure to drink now.

If any château in all of the classified growths consistently outperforms its original status, it is Lynch Bages. Indeed, this château has long been prized by Pauillac lovers who seek good value, yet well made wine. The property is situated just outside the quiet village of Pauillac north of Latour and Pichon Lalande. It is run by the very capable and amiable Jean-Charles Cazes who took over from his father Jean-Michel Cazes in 2006.

Fonseca Port, 1994

Vintage Port

*** 97 Points - Parker ***

reviews: "One of the most spectacular 1994s, this opaque purple-colored wine is an exotic, flamboyant, ostentatious port. Extremely fragrant and pungent, with a flashy display of jammy cassis, pepper, licorice, and truffles, this port is an attention-grabber. Awesomely rich, and full-bodied, with superb length, richness, and overall balance, it possesses a huge mid-palate, layers of flavor, an unctuous texture, and a blockbuster finish. Everything is in place, with the brandy and tannin well-integrated, even concealed by the masses of fruit and glycerin. This wine will drink fabulously well at age ten, but keep for up to thirty years".

Quinta de Ervamoira, 1994

Vintage Port, Douro
Library stock from Ramos Pinto
***94 Points- Robert Parker- Wine Advocate***

The earthy nose is a little mute, but the maturing palate is rich and full of softening black fruit. The wine is now coming into its own, and while it lacks the complexity and punch of a great Port, it has plenty going on in its favor, including layers of spice and sweetness on the finish.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1994

Vintage Port
***94 Points- RobertParker***

An outstanding port scoring 94 points (Robert Parker)

"One of the finest Warres I have ever tasted, this opaque purple-coloured wine is made in a drier style (a la Dow), yet it is expressive, extremely full-bodied, with superb richness, purity, and well-integrated alcohol and tannin. It possesses a great mid-palate as well as impressive length. Tasters should take note of the wealth of peppery, liquorice-scented and flavoured raspberry and blackcurrant fruit. Look for it to be ready to drink in 10-12 years, and keep for 30+. This is a profound example of Warre vintage port." Parker Wine Advocate 1996.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1994

Vintage Port
Special Library Release
***17.5 Points- JancisRobinson.com***
***94 Points-Wine Advocate***

A very successful Vintage for Warre’s with several leading critics singing its praises shortly after the wine’s initial en primeur release. In October 1996, Robert Parker wrote, “One of the finest Warre’s I have ever tasted [...] This is a profound example of Warre’s Vintage Port.” Following nearly three decades of quietly ageing in the Symington family’s own reserve stocks in the Warre’s Vintage cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, the family have decided to release a limited quantity to provide lovers of fine wine with a unique opportunity to acquire and enjoy a Vintage Port that has aged under perfect conditions and is now at a perfect stage in its development.

Quinta do Vesuvio, 1992

Vintage Port

*** 90 Points (outstanding) Robert Parker

Reviews:
A supple, charming, dark ruby/purple-colored wine, Quinta do Vesuvio's 1992 Vintage Port offers excellent concentration, a velvety texture, not much weight or tannin, a precocious, penetrating fragrance, sweet fruit, medium to full body, and a gentle finish. Quinta do Vesuvio, 1991

Vintage Port

1991 Quinta do Vesuvio. Now Part of Symington family Estates, Quinta do Vesuvio is one of the great Quintas of the Douro. The 1991 Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage shows all the hallmarks of a classic Vintage Port. Intense red colour. Packed with aromas of berry fruits such as blackcurrant and graceful floral hints. On the palate very complex fruit flavours, excellent ripe tannins and a sweet and powerful finish.

Wine Makers Notes:
The heavy rains that fell in the early part of 1991 were to stand the vineyards in good stead for the dry spring and very hot summer which ensued. Following the intense August heat, refreshing showers in early September ensured the grapes achieved a very good state of maturity with high sugar levels.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1990

St Estephe, 2me Cru Classe, Bordeaux

In contrast to the 1989, the 1990 is a spectacular wine, and, along with the 1986, 1982, and 1953, one of the four finest Cos d'Estournels made in the post-World War II era. Bruno Prats believes it is the finest wine he has ever made. In the most recent tasting, the 1990 was even better than in the past, charming me as well as other tasters with its flashy display of opulent Merlot (about 40% of the blend) mixed with ripe Cabernet Sauvignon. It was one of the more forward 1990s in the tasting, which no doubt accounted for its precocious showing. This super-concentrated wine possesses a roasted herb, sweet, jammy black fruit-scented nose, with noteworthy opulence and succulence.

Vieux Chateau Certan, 1989

Pomerol
***94 Points- Neal Martin for the Wine Advocate

***94 Points- Neal Martin for the Wine Advocate, tasted 2016***

"The 1989 Vieux Château Certan has long been one of my favorite wines of that decade. The bouquet shows no signs of relinquishing that title with gorgeous black truffle, bay leaf, warm gravel and briary scents that are simply beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine line of acidity, "warm earth" on the entry, leather and truffle, great depth here with sublime precision on the finish, which is bridled with hints of mushroom and cloves. Maybe this is reaching its peak? Then again, it shows absolutely no signs of reaching the end of its plateau.

Vieux Chateau Certan, 1988

Pomerol

91 points Vinous
The 1988 Vieux Chateau Certan is a vintage that I have not tasted often, something I rue even more having been reacquainted with it. To be honest, for the first five minutes it felt overawed by the 1989. However, it soon gets its act together to deliver and gorgeous nose of black fruit, melted tar and cigar box, unashamedly classic in style, less sensual than the succeeding two vintages and yet extremely well defined. The palate is well balanced with fine tannin, perfectly judged acidity, tobacco and cedar dominating the second half and yet there remains more than enough freshness and length to urge you back for another sip.

Chateau d'Yquem, 1986

Sauternes 1er Grand Cru Classe
Sweet White Wine

Château d'Yquem is considered by many to be Bordeaux’s single greatest wine and it is the only wine in France to hold the Premier Cru Superieur (Great First Growth) designation. The uncompromising pursuit of quality is what sets this sweet white wine apart – a standard meticulously maintained throughout the estate’s history.

Chateau d`Yquem is often described as the greatest sweet wine in the world. After centuries of family ownership, Yquem was finally sold in acrimonious circumstances to Louis Vuitton-Moët-Hennessy in 1999. However, its former owner and director Alexandre de Lur-Saluce remains in charge.

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1986

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe, Bordeaux
*** 94 Points - Parker ***

The history of Lynch-Bages, situated in the lands of “Batges” at the entrance to Pauillac, is emblematic of the Médoc region.
The Lynch-Bages vineyard (1855 Grand Cru Classé), overlooks the Gironde estuary and stretches over a beautiful gravelly hilltop. Formerly owned by the illustrious Lynch family, of Irish descent, the estate was acquired by the Cazes family in 1939.

Located on the left bank of the Gironde river, the Pauillac appellation enjoys exceptional climatic and geological conditions.
Combined with the natural barrier of the Landes forest, the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde estuary play a fundamental role in regulating temperatures and contribute to creating a very specific micro-climate.

Chateau Palmer, 1986

Margaux 3me Cru Classe

*** 93 Points Wine Journal ***

Reviews "This is one of the great Palmers of the 1980s, though it is several years since I last encountered it. Here, there is one word that springs to mind-class. Wonderful definition, a little reserved at first, but wonderfully defined with cedar, sandalwood and cigar box. The palate has firm tannins as you would expect from an -86, but it is married with Margaux femininity, leading to a lovely, supple finish with graphite and blackberry lingering on the back palate. Superb. Drink now-2018. Tasted November 2009." Neil Martin, Wine Journal

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1985

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe

*** 92 Points - Parker ***

"The 1985 has been totally disarming, seductive, and sexy since birth. Its corpulence, medium to full-bodied personality, low acidity, attractive silkiness, and copious quantities of herb-tinged cassis fruit have always made this wine a winner. It is beginning to display a few signs that it is at its peak of maturity and will not get any better. In fact, it might be best consumed over the next 5-10 years. As it sat in the glass, the 1985 faded more than any other vintage, but its immense up-front pleasure cannot be denied. This is a wine to decant right before serving, and not to linger over.

The 1985 Fonseca Vintage Port has a lovely nose of maturing port, finely styled and just screaming quality. The palate carries a svelte texture, with a creamy, flattering character. There is purity, balance, a clean, bright quality and despite this lots of appealing grip. This has great impact, and yet is so welcoming and alluring. Excellent wine, and a great example of the vintage. (November 2006).

Reviews:
Dark tawny with orangey-red highlights. I wouldn't quite call it mahogany in colour, but it's close. Very dark, and lots of brown.

The 1983 Ramos Pinto has a startling intensity with a superb and slightly evolved cherry-red colour. A notoriously intense, lively and energetic nose that gives it a masculine quality. Aromas of red fruits and of red gooseberry, cherry and plum preserves emanate from a solid structure. A strong, solid attack. Energetic and fresh on the palate with a fruity flavour and a good acidic base. Excellent integrity. Firm, elegant tannins and a long life ahead of it. A powerful and velvety finish.

D'Oliveiras Madeira, 1982

D'Oliveiras Boal Madeira

Madeira is a complex, interesting wine and is made in virtually every vintage. Due to the unique estufagem aging process Madeira is one of the longest-lived wines and also improves for days after opening, but will keep, once opened, for a month and more in a decanter.

Medium orange amber color with 1 millimeter clear meniscus; appealing, light coffee, almond, reminiscent of Moroccan bastilla on the nose with a hint of passion fruit; tight, silky textured, tasty, balanced, rounded, tart orange, tart passion fruit palate with a vague sense of light salt; long finish.

Try this medium-sweet Madeira with stews, lamb and game dishes with sweet elements and spices such as cinnamon, cloves, cardamom and fennel.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1982

St Estephe, 2nd Growth Classification

Review by Robert Parker... "A spectacular performance for this wine, Cos d'Estournel's 1982 exhibits a dark ruby/purple color with light pink at the rim. Sweet aromas of jammy black fruits intermixed with roasted espresso and vanillin jump from the glass of this young, concentrated, full-bodied, succulent effort. An opulent texture, low acidity, and splendidly pure, concentrated, blackberry and cassis fruit suggest this 1982 can be drunk now, or cellared for another 15-20 years. An awesome wine!"
