Sherry, Non Vintage

New

Very Old Bottled Palo Cortado
Bottled by Smallwood and Sons Ltd

A wine of great complexity which combines the delicate bouquet of an Amontillado with the body and palate of an Oloroso. Chestnut to mahogany in colour with a complex bouquet which harmonises the characteristic notes of Amontillados and Olorosos, citric notes reminiscent of bitter orange and lactic notes suggestive of fermented butter. It has a deep, rounded, ample palate with smooth, delicate aromatic notes appearing in the aftertaste, leading to delicious lingering finish.

Palo Cortado is an intermediate type of sherry and probably the most ambiguous of them all. This is fuelled by the vague

Williams & Humbert, Old East India No.15

A 1960's Williams & Humbert bottling, Old East India sherry. East India sherry is a sweetened Oloroso. The name refers to the East India Company, a British trading company that transported cotton, silk, spices, tea, saltpetre and other commodities from the East Indies. As a fortified wine (which lasted longer), sherry was taken along as ballast and to serve the ship’s crew on its transatlantic journey.

Oloroso means fragrant and the best examples will display dried fruits, leather, polished wood and exotic spices.

Pocas Port, 2017

Vintage Port
Single Bottle In Gift Case

Review Scores
*** 17.5+/20 Jancis Robinson ***

A masterpiece - even better than the outstanding 2015. Classic Pocas, drier and less sweet that the English shippers. Deep ruby colour. Aroma of great aromatic intensity where floral aromas predominate, ripe fruit and compote. Silky, elegant and balanced. Very expressive mouth with fruity and persistent finish.Tasted April 2019.

*** 17.5+/20 Jancis Robinson ***
Saturated, opaque black, with a narrow, purple rim. Inky, dusty, schist minerality and focused liqueur blackberries. Reticent. On the palate, intense and dense, baked blueberry and blackberry, with ink and a touch of violets.

Fonseca Port, 2015

Guimaraens Vintage Port, 75cl Single Bottle

This 2015 Vintage Port Wine from Fonseca was released under the Guimaraens label. Managing Director, Adrian Bridge, commented: As Fonseca’s 200th anniversary year, I am delighted that 2015 has produced a Vintage Port of such excellent quality. It will be released as a Guimaraens Vintage with a special commemorative label to mark the occasion.’ He added, ‘The 2015 Vintage Ports are attractive and approachable on the nose but supported by big, firm tannins. The Guimaraens Vintage 2015 will make excellent early drinking but will not disappoint those who prefer to cellar it for the future.’ Fonseca’s wine maker, David Guimaraens, remarked: ‘The dry spring and summer produced low yields but the healthiest crop we have seen for many years.

Pernand-Verglesses, 2014

1er cru Fichots, Rollin Pere et Fils

There is a good ripeness of fruit here, derived from grapes grown on low-yielding, 50 to 60 year-old vines. Rémi and Simon Rollin successfully preserve this richness to produce a wine with finesse, good structure and super length.

Taylor's Port, 2011

Vintage Port (Half Bottle)

The 2011 Taylor's Vintage Port Wine is made only in exceptional years, following the rigorous selection and tasting process to meet the requirements for declaration. Historically Taylor's has only declared a maximum of 3 vintages per decade. 2011 has been hailed as a classic vintage by all accounts. Ideal ripening conditions in this year have led Fladgate wine-maker David Guimaraens to conclude that the 2011's 'stand out for the purity of the fruit and the quality of the tannins, which are silky and well integrated but provide plenty of structure. The 2011 vintage is textbook Taylor's in its structured aromatics and elegance (according to Fladgate Managing Director Adrian Bridge).

Sherry

"Cuco" Oloroso
Barbadillo D.O Jerez

This 2008 Sherry is mahogany in colour. Pleasant aroma reminiscent of noble oak from its ageing period and dried fruit. Mouth-filling and beautifully dry on the palate. This wine is aged using oxidative ageing, such as this oloroso, can remain in perfect organoleptic condition many years after bottling, even once the bottle has been opened.

Serving Suggestion: Serve around 14-17 degrees Celsius with game casseroles. If you feel adventurous try this oloroso with lamb curry.

Cossart Gordon Madeira, 2005

2005 Colheita Malmsey Madeira

Cossart Gordon 2005 Malmsey Colheita Madeira is made from grapes harvested in a single year. A colheita Madeira is therefore a type of dated Madeira, like vintage Madeira. It has to be aged for a minimum of 5 years in barrels before it can be called a Colheita Madeira (for Colheita Port it is a minimum of 7 years). There is no maximum age limit for Colheita Madeira but after 19 years ageing it can then legally be called Vintage Madeira. This barrel ageing gives the Colheita Madeira some of the character and complexity of a young vintage Madeira. Madeira is a complex, interesting wine and is made in virtually every vintage.

Sherry

"Obispo Gascon" Palo Cortado
Barbadillo D.O. Jerez

*92 Points- Robert Parker*

A 2004 vintage sherry wine. Attractive colour of antique gold. The aromatic complexity reveals toasted almonds, walnuts and raisins. On the palate it is pleasant, rounded and harmonious. Deliciously smooth and lingering.

The Palo Cortado sherries are particularly special within the Jerez-Xèrés-Sherry Designation of Origin. This is because despite the fact that production follows the similar physical-chemical process of oxidative ageing as with the olorosos, the result is quite different with their organoleptic characteristics falling somewhere between those of an amontillado and an oloroso.

2004 Bordeaux and Port Duo

A bottle of 2004 Gruaud Larose and a bottle of Taylor's Vargellas vintage port
Includes a double dark mocha leather-effect gift box with silk liner

For the claret but also the port lovers in your life! This double gift features a quality Bordeaux wine and a Single Vineyard Port from the very good 2004 vintage, both bottles are presented in a double dark mocha leather effect gift box with silk liner, as illustrated.

2004 Chateau Gruaud Larose, Saint-Julien
The ’04 Gruaud Larose has a deep garnet core. The bouquet is light and tobacco-scented, quite earthy with a hint of sous-bois. Perhaps it just lacks a little vigour considering its youth? The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins, driven by the acidity, dark brambly black fruit, earthy, a touch of white pepper towards the loose-knit finish.

Dolcetto d'Alba, 1996

New

Fontanafredda

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

Chianti, 1993

Contado SO.VI.CO

The area’s most highly regarded wines come from the Chianti Classico zone which is the heartland of the Chianti wine region – its traditional and longest-established vinicultural area. This fame is due not just to the high quality of the wines, but also to the classico zone's iconic Tuscan landscape and wine making traditions. This Chianti is characterised by its red and black cherry character, intermingled with notes of wild herbs, mint and spice, supported by a racy acidity and mellow tannins.

Macon, 1992

Robert Sarrau

Macon is the name for the red and white wines which come from the Mâconnais section of Burgundy, France. This region is the most southerly in Burgundy, and also the largest. There are 42 villages in the Mâconnais region, broken out into seven designations: Macon, Macon Superieur, Macon Village, Pouilly Fuissé, Pouilly Loche, Pouilly Vinzele, and Saint Veran. The majority of wines from Macon are red wines, using the gamay noir, pinot noir, and pinot gris grapes. These are light wines, and should be drunk young. They go well with red meats and mild cheeses.

Baron de Sigognac, 1988

Armagnac (Comes in Original Sigognac Wooden Box as illustrated)

The company behind this Armagnac owns one of the most important stocks of old vintages in the whole region. They are growers as well as distillers and specialise in sourcing and ageing old casks of Armagnac.

The Armagnac is made from a blend of Baco and Ugni Blanc, the predominant grapes used in the production of Armagnac. The distillation takes place in a column still to an alcohol strength of about 54%. The spirit is then aged in local black oak casks. The alcohol content then reduces naturally to about 40% after about forty years. Presented in a perfectly simple wooden box.
