Enologica Valtelinese

Inferno is one of five viticultural sub-zones specifically identified as producing Valtellina wines of particularly high quality: the other four are Grumello, Sassella, Maroggia and Valgella. Inferno means 'hell' in Italian, and refers to the slopes between Sondrio town and the village of Tresivio. Although DOC laws do not explain the origins of this name, it has been suggested that in summer the slopes here get noticeably hotter than the rest of the valley. Just across Sondrio to the west is Sassella, the finest of the Valtellina sub-zones.

Sweet entry, with the oranges - blood oranges - dominating the initial flavours. Lots of acidity giving the fruit plenty of support. The texture thickens in the mouth - great development, thick and flavourful. Excellent wine. Enormous aftertaste. Cedar wood, cranberries and with a lovely sweetness lasting all the way through the long length. Improved in the glass for the short time it remained in there! Antonio Vallana - Montalbano

Spanna has often been cited by wine experts as one of Italy’s greatest ageing wines. Spanna’s longevity can be attributed, at least in part, to the addition of smaller amounts of less tannic, more acidic grape varieties. The 1954 still has a deep red colour and density. On the nose there is complex, lovely bouquet of spice, baked cherry, toffee and perhaps a hint of strawberry. This Oloroso sherry wine, was bottled in 1954. An intense sherry that is matured in an oxygen present environment. The resulting wines are fragrant and the best examples will display dried fruits, leather, polished wood and exotic spices. Oloroso shows nutty aromas (especially walnuts), combined with polished / balsamic notes, subtle dried fruits, toasted hints, tobacco and autumn aromas. There are noticeable spicy notes in older examples. Often also meaty hints, truffle and leather.

Château Haut-Brion’s vineyard is located in the commune of Pessac, just a few miles southwest of Bordeaux’s city center. It belongs to the Pessac-Léognan appellation, to the north of the Graves wine-growing region. Château Haut-Brion is the only wine to be both First Growth from the 1855 classification and Classified Growth of the Graves.
Approximately 2,000 years ago, the virtues of these tiny quartz pebbles known as “gravels” were discovered. The earliest written mention of a wine that was specifically identified as being produced from these soils can be traced back to 1521.

Exciting that this was very much intact. Great color for a sixty year old. Probably at the beginning of a decline curve - but aging gracefully. Smooth and gentle, but retaining its essential body, acidity, and identity. Aromas and flavors were classic aged Pauillac. Touches of cinnamon and clove over red fruit, cigar box, leather and a plush velvet texture. Ultimately this had astonishing strength and character. More grace than power at this stage of life. This is one classy old wine!
