A touch of Pedro Ximénez added to a dry oloroso results in this type of sherry known as “amoroso.” Translated into English as loving or affectionate, the name pays tribute to the smoothness obtained during the lengthy and traditional ageing period. Its alcohol content and body mean that it can be served on the rocks.

Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Italy's north-western Piedmont region. This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso. John Leacock sailed to Madeira from the United Kingdom (after the death of his father) in 1741 and at the age of 15 became the youngest apprentice at the firm of Madeira merchants, Catanach and Murdoch staying until his contract expired on 11 March 1749. This is a rare and very limited release of the 1950 Madeira from the family cellars. The bottles are in perfect condition. There is something ethereal about tasting such a rare vintage. The 1950 Tinta Negra is very dry as one would expect from this style of Madeira. There is a huge amount happening on the complexity front with some bitter nut skin notes with dried flowers and citrus pith. Although quite dry, this does not come across as too severe. An electric wine that is astonishingly refreshing. Massive finish that goes on and on.

The Il Barone ‘49 shows a deep garnet colour. For something so old it is still fresh with a touch of oxidation on notes of black cherries, chocolate and espresso infused with sweet spices. The wine has a long finish. This is a wine from the 1949 wine harvest. Fermentation was arrested before complete leaving a high residual sugar content which has preserved the wine. The wine then went into large old Slovenian casks for ten years and then stored in tanks where it has remained until bottling this year.
